How does this product hold up after repeated visits to a car wash or rock salt in the winter? Where can we buy film that covers just headlights? I have a 2008 Honda that is too dinged up to worry about the entire car, but I sure would like to protect the headlights once I restore them. I learned of this product from a video that demonstrated how to restore yellow headlights to clear, and this film was mentioned.

@dial2fast3 жыл бұрын
The 3M PPF product will last a good 10+ years (my own experience). The adhesive is very strong and does take quite a bit of work to remove. You can wax the film but you should use a synthetic wax and not something with carnauba.

Great video. I've installed one in the past and always made sure the edges were adhering and not lifting up while curing and drying. However, after almost a year of ownership, and maybe due to me allowing the car to remain dirty for weeks at a time instead of keeping up with regular washes. I noticed dirt build up right at the edge of the film. It's not under the film, but right at the edging where it meets the paint. Do you know if there's a trick to clean those edges? Also, I wanted your take on this. Do you prefer to leave a mm or so of film "short" from the edge of the panel you are working on? I've seen some installs where they wrap it just slightly around the edge of whatever panel and have seen it lift up just a little over time. I just wonder if it would be better not to wrap around the edges, but try to keep it flat on the front fascia on any panel... Great job! Very information, and as always, I enjoy all your videos. Thanks!
@dial2fast3 жыл бұрын
As for the dirt showing on the edge of the film, this will happen because of the thickness of the film. There is an edge that is raised which allows for dirt to collect. You can clean it by buffing the edge with a carnauba wax and cloth. Usually that will clean it all up. With regards to wrapping around the edge, if you buy a precut kit off ebay, those kits are not cut to be big enough to wrap around. They are cut to just fit on top of the body panel. If you want to wrap around the edge, you will most likely need to buy the roll in bulk and cut your own as you wrap.

PPF install is such a skill dependent job that takes years to develop. How many hours to complete the whole job and what did you save in labor as a DYI?

Time spent was more than normal because I had to film the process. It took me about 5 hours with breaks in between. This kit cost me $288. Depending on what brand of film you use and how many pieces you need done, most shops will charge around $700 to over $1000 for several pieces.

I’ve done it 4 doorsills, which gave me the confidence to do the headlights, mine were more difficult than this as it’s a 3D shape with valleys and raised sections. The film is very workable if you’re patient. It even started raining mid way through so I pulled the film off, put it back on the backing paper and tried again 2 days later. Now I’m going to try the bumper. Tack solution is like an extra set of hands anchoring parts so you can stretch it. The other thing is, some shops don’t pay for these cutout designs from 3M and wrap bulk materials on your bumper and cut into your paint. I don’t care how many years of experience you have your hand holding a blade doesn’t have the accuracy of 8 mils or 0.008 inches (thickness of film).

Hi there. How's your PPF holding up? I have the same Odyssey in white. I am wondering if your have dirt build up around the edges? Also, should there be any lifting of the film on some of the sharp edges.
@dial2fast5 жыл бұрын
If the install if done cleanly, there should be no lifting on the edge or corners. You may notice a black line on the edge of the film after a period of time, but that's just dirt sitting right on the edge between the film and the car paint. A quick buff with some car wax or detailer spray will remove that. If you see dirt underneath, then the edge was not properly applied to the paint and there is a small gap.

@dial2fast5 жыл бұрын
After leaving it on for many years, there may be some glue residue if you remove the film, but it can be cleaned off. If you have existing paint chip when applying the film, that paint indent will not be filled by the film, so you will see there is a paint chip underneath. The best thing is to try to fill the chip with some touch up paint before applying the film.

Make sure the car surface you touch is very clean because your hand will pick up all kinds of dirt. Also use a lot of slip solution to rinse out any small dust. You can try spraying directly onto the piece of dust or grime that's on the adhesive side, and use your finger to pick it off. Basically try to rinse it off with the solution.

Would it be bad to install the film over the rock chips and the holes? Or do u know of any ways to get rid of the rock chips before installing the film?
@dial2fast4 жыл бұрын
With rock chips, you can use touch up paint to fill the chips. This method will NOT make your bumper look new, but cosmetically looks better. The other method is to pay a bodyshop to repaint the bumper which cost more money and you need to wait about 60 days before apply PPF film. If you don't care to all that, you can apply PPF on the current bumper with the chips, but of course you will have the chips visible under the film. The film will provide further new chips. The choice is yours.
@hassanmohammad73974 жыл бұрын
dial2fast thanks for the reply. Yea I’m going to think about using touch up paint. Getting the bumper repainted is not something I want to do. Applying the film over the previous chips, may show the chips, but will for sure protect against future rock chips.
