How to install a fence on a wall, using bolt down post shoes.
You can use this same method to install a fence on a block wall, install a fence on a brick wall, install a fence on a retaining wall.
There are many ways how to build a fence on top of a wall but this way is quick and easy, when you know how.
Only a few materials and tools are needed so any diy'er could take this on. We use 4" x 4" post shoes/ supports and 150mm M8 thunder bolts.
Once you have the post supports bolted down and timber posts secured to the supports, you can quite simply build a closeboard frame between the posts, like we are in the video, or you can install pre fabricated fence panels, or maybe a trellis for some extra privacy
The post supports are strong enough to support a full 6ft high fence when built on ground level, providing the brick or concrete is at least 6" thick. If you are installing on a high wall though, dont forget to keep in mind your local fence height restrictions
I hope that this video helped you in some way, and if it did, please leave a comment for me in the comments section. I love to hear from people who gained value from any of my videos. I always respond to comments, so would be great to hear from you guys ! 👍

Fantastic video buddy, thank you. Would this work on a concrete block retaining wall, if the concrete blocks are laid on their widest edge (215mm)? And would it be fine to attach the much narrower DuraPost steel posts using the DuraPost bolt down?

Hey mate I got the same ones on Amazon. They come with bolts to bolt down but they are bolts with nuts and a special device to expand in the concrete but they are only about 3 inches long. Do you recommend those or using these. I’m building a fence on nearly the same slab of concrete you have !

Hi, we’ve used these bolt downs for our new fence posts on top of our concrete paving. Worked well for the first 6 months, though fence is now leaning and out of place due to recent storm/ gale force winds etc. Is there any extra support that one could apply to reinforce the fence post?

I want to use these post holders on a 5ft tall featherboard fence that will be 11m long - will they be strong enough? I plan to use about 8 or 9 posts to distribute the load from the wind.
@JohnOsCreations

I find those fence mate swift clap bolt down post supports a waste of time along with timber posts. The tinber always shrinks depending on the weather and the posts become loose over time. I fond using metal posts between your cladding sections to be a far better option. Hello from Ireland 🙂

Great vid. Just what I was looking for. I need to build similar for my front garden wall, but the feather edge board / fence will only be 55cm tall. (it's a small fence!) and about 4 meters long. Do you / any other's think I can downsize on the posts/masonry screws given the wall is not going to be subject to the same sort of forces as a 2m fence? Many thanks.
@JamesMontana
@JamesMontana 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks man. Yeah go down to 3" posts and they will be fine. The 4 " posts are a bit too big for small fences and can look too much. 100mm screws will be absolutely fine too.

@@JamesMontana thanks a lot for a prompt reply. Impressive! I was contemplating 2" posts and 75m screws but thought that may be pushing my luck a little and may be too flimsy. Hi, I am just wondering how you attach wooden gravel boards when using bolt downs? Thanks.
@JamesMontana
@JamesMontana 3 жыл бұрын
The bolt downs usually come with holes on the sides to screw in cleats. Sometimes they dont but you can just drill holes in the metal if not.

Can you use railway sleepers instead of brick wall and then use the post brackets drilled into the sleepers?
@JamesMontana
@JamesMontana 2 жыл бұрын
You can do it with lightweight fencing like 4ft picket or trellis but you will need to be sure the sleepers are fixed to the ground securely.

Hi, I have a question. Can I install these anchor bolts into a red adobe brick retaining wall??
@JamesMontana
@JamesMontana 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mary, Yes, providing the wall is wider than the size of bolt down plate you are using and at least 4" thick. You want at least a 2" clearance from the drill holes to the edge of the brick. Too close and you might crack off the edge. I hope this helps.

@@JamesMontana Will they be strong enough to support a 6' wood privacy fence? Thanks so much!
@JamesMontana
@JamesMontana 3 жыл бұрын
@@marylandry440 i would always be worried about putting a 6ft fence on bolts downs but i have put a 2m fence and its been fine. All depends on how windy it is in your area. Is the fence in an exposed position ? How old is the wall. Remember though, in the uk the max height without planning permission of a fence is 2m from ground level and that will include the wall. If the wall is over 2ft in height, id bolt posts to the front face instead. That'll be alot stronger.
@marylandry440

@@JamesMontanaThis is a side yard that sits below ground level. I wanted to put up a wood fence that is 3' then add a temporary addition to the top like ladest or bamboo for extra privacy. Its hard to explain how my land is but the whole lot sits down from the street and is not level. I live in San Diego, Calif so we don't have a lot of harsh weather. Oh that retaining wall is at least 50 years old. Thanks so much! Mary
@JamesMontana
@JamesMontana 3 жыл бұрын
@@marylandry440 id say that was absolutely fine then. They will hold 3' high fence with a bamboo top no problem. Especially since its down a side alleyway. Just as long as the wall isnt falling apart. Good luck with your project 👍
@FanPhys
@FanPhys 3 жыл бұрын
My experience with any arrangement that involves welded fixings is that they are complete and utter rubbish. The welds are not as strong as the connection between the plate and the concrete, and if the fence needs to move, that's where it will move. I've used metal fixings on one fence and never will again... from here on out it will be concrete all the way, or fixing the posts directly to the wall with anchor bolts. I'd imagine this would work for a very small fence that isn't exposed to the wind, but for a high fence, nope.
@JamesMontana
@JamesMontana 3 жыл бұрын
I do agree these arent the way to go with very tall fences subjected to high wind but if installed properly, in the right depth of concrete these do work really well. Ive installed 6ft high fences and ive not had any problems with them.
@FanPhys
@FanPhys 3 жыл бұрын
@@JamesMontana That's good to know as I may need something similar for a 5 or 6 foot fence. We did a new garden fence with 750mm spikes, and at least one of the spikes has snapped off just below the cup that holds the post. I'm sure if the welds were better quality it would be alright.
@JamesMontana
@JamesMontana 3 жыл бұрын
@@FanPhys i honestly think that must have been a freak occurrence because i have removed lots of these from concrete by anchoring off them to pull them out and they have never snapped unless completely rusted.
