Why is it lately that all these videos are basically before and after with unhelpful filler and facts in between? Show me how you ran the line. Did you tap an existing outlet? Give the lamp its own breaker for future proofing? It's not just Ron, but TOH, ATOH and pretty much everyone else I watch as well. The videos are great, but I'm watching to learn something new beginning to end, not just for entertainment purposes. I'll also note that I'm 1:31 seconds in and will go ahead and finish this video. Just my thought on the deal.

Yes. Run the electrical line first. Top an existing line if there's room on the breaker or add a new breaker.

utilities will only mark lines that a public utility have installed. Private residences are on their own. Obviously the home owner knows what he has buried in his own yard.

Never ran a wire that was not run with PVC pipe or other and then run the electrical wire through it whether PVC jacketed or not. That is a failure waiting to happen. Would not run Jacketed PVC wire on it's own. Low voltage is one thing but this is not. I'm not on board with the Electrical installation bottom to top. Someone is going to be dealing with a shocking experience years down the road. We also did not talk about GFCI protection in this installation which should be part of this type project.. At least with GFCI in 30 to 40 years you can rerun the wire as it was meant to be.

Underground Feeder cable is what was used and is perfectly safe and suitable for typical uses like this. Running conduit is a waste of time if not needed.

He did everything right up until the point of installing the fixture itself. He stripped WAYYY too much of the wire insulation back. The hot wire is exposed and rewrapped with the rest in a mess of tape. Only a small amount of copper should be exposed to make the connection in the wirenuts. And there is no reason to tape the entire bunch together. Face the wirenuts up so condensation doesnt drip in (like an umbrella) and tuck it in. If you have that much that needs to be taped like that, you did it wrong.

I came here to say this. I had to rewind to make sure I saw what I thought I saw. That is WAY too much insulation removed, basically only luck and a small amount of electrical tape separating the hot from ground.

He digs his hole 32 inches then puts in 6 inches of crushed stone. So his post is only actually 26 inches in the ground. Then on top of that he uses just dirt to "secure" the post in the ground. This post is coming loose after the first winter thaw. At 26 inches, if he had used concrete or foam it might last 2 winters, 3 at the most. The crazy thing is he had a gasoline powered auger, why half-ass it? He should have went down 48 inches, used 6 inches of crushed stone and then filled the hole with concrete or hard expanding foam to about 6 inches from the surface. Then back fill the last 6 inches with dirt. If you really want to make sure this post never moves you could drill 3-4 holes through the last 16-20 inches on opposite sides then insert rebar so that it sticks out 4-6 inches on each side. That way when you pour concrete or foam the post is permanently locked in and can never heave up out of the ground.

Hah, I just made this exact comment. That's the problem with trying to cover everything and leaving your field of expertise (whatever his is)... eventually what you don't know will show. Just like the basement door video a few vids ago, didn't even waterproof and flash the exposed sheathing...

@@locustsun There's no way the light should work with the way the wiring is shown in the video; he didn't strip any of the insulation off of the lamp's wire before putting on the wire nut. They most likely fixed the wiring off camera after the wiring either tripped the breaker from the bare wires touching each other or the light just not turning on at all from the bad connection.

You did not do what a home owner would do as a home owner--you hired out what a home owner would do on his or her own. I recon you are an unglorified consulter and not a real home inventor one day at a time. Your video is limited to personal accomplishments and more subject to less inventive home creators. A real home owner does it better! No outside craftsmanship!
