Great video install! Found your comment on the HD site review for this Kohler Highline. Thinking of choosing this one for the 16.5" chair height, great flush & affordable price. Good tip about the wax ring usage too ✌🤓😎🇺🇸💯🔥

Thank you, Glad the video was helpful! The 2 wax ring trick is something I’ve been doing for around a decade. Toilet drain pipe flanges can be at various heights depending on what was probably the original flooring height (vinyl sheet, tile, real wood floor). Which can affect if an Extended Wax Ring is enough or if you would be better off adding some PVC toilet flange extension rings with silicone in-between, if the drain flange/ pipe is below the finish floor height.

Hey old buddy, I stopped using the wax rings altogether a while back, been buying the reusable silicone gaskets, they are a bit more expensive but I've had 100% satisfaction with them!

Hopefully it stays sealed if and when the toilet backs up, causing the seal to be slightly under static pressure.

The 3 tank bolts need a good screw down to get the inside parts to settle down with enough of a squash to make then water tight.

I followed everything you did in your video. It took me approximately 1 hour 15 minutes to complete the job. I had the mop and clean around the toilet area it was kind of nasty before I actually started the job.

The toilet install with caulking took me the same amount of time, and usually does. I’m not the fastest, like some plumber who may do this daily, but the results are there and I’m thorough. Glad it all worked out well for you.
@sommerday7710 күн бұрын
plumbers leave a little uncaulked area (in back) around the toilet, to allow water to escape IF THERE ARE ANY LEAKS. Better to know soon rather than later in ceiling below, of leaks
@craftsmanconnection10 күн бұрын
I left about 1-2” of uncaulked area at the back of the toilet base for every toilet over the past 26 years.
@craftsmanconnection Жыл бұрын
Installing a toilet takes me 1 hour, and the caulking takes 15 minutes. Removing a toilet can take 15-30 minutes. Going to buy the toilet can take 30-60 minutes.

How tight do you tighten the tank bolts?
@craftsmanconnection7 ай бұрын
Jeff, 1. For the toilet tank, there is usually 2-3 bump out nubs on the tank that will come in contact with the top of the bowl behind the toilet seat, or a straight ledge on the front and back mounting area of the bowl. The goal is just to not have the tank rocking back and forth or side to side. Beyond that, do not over tighten the tank with any sort of real grip strength. See finger trick below. 2. For the toilet bowl, imagine taking your thumb, pointer finger, and middle finger, without involving your palm, and whatever your fingers can tighten, that is enough. Don’t even think about “torquing” it down, because the toilet bowl can crack. The bolts hold the tank and bowl downward. For side to side control of the bowl, that is what the silicone caulking is for.

Water still runs. How important is it to leave the rubber washer out, with the flush valve? Didn't read the directions properly and don't want to take toilet apart again.

What rubber washer are you talking about? The flush valve was already installed on this toilet.

Your toilet flange is not installed correctly. It's suppose to sit on top of the finished floor. I get many service calls because contractor install new tile in bathroom and don't raise the toilet flange. Or the home owner trys to put two wax rings together to make up for the void. And it leaks after a few months
@craftsmanconnection11 ай бұрын
Thanks, but I didn’t install the toilet flange. That would have been the original plumber, who also didn’t glue a 3” vent pipe I had to fix as well. The original plumber should factor in 1/2” flooring, but for all I know, it could have been a vinyl sheet flooring originally., hence if the flange is flush with the new flooring, I use an extra thick wax ring. If the flange was below, I would use a flange extender kit. So far, I’ve never had or heard of any leaks.

What size water supply line did you use?
@craftsmanconnection5 ай бұрын
The house already had a 1/2” copper water pipe, with a 1/2” to 3/8” shut off valve, which leads to a 3/8” hose that was probably 12” or so long. The toilet seat is usually around 17”-18” high, so that’s the same height as the tank. The valve on the wall usually around 6” to 8” off the floor, so 12” to 16” long toilet supply hose will work, if the valve is in line with the connection at the tank. If you need to know your specific hose length, take a tape measure and measure the diagonal distance as if it was the hose and add a couple inches for the radius / bend. Enough info?

How tight do you make the nuts for the tank?
@craftsmanconnection6 ай бұрын
Does lightly hand tight make sense? The bowl to tank already has a thick foam rubber gasket, and the holes in the tank for the screws…well those bolts have a rubber sleeve around them that seal too. Honestly, if I didn’t care to make the tank look level, or feel stable, I could have not tightened them up as much. The tank on that toilet comes down to some bumped out nubs to basically rest on. Tighten the bolts down enough to not have a wobbly tank. Maybe you’re tightening those bolts about as much as you would normally tighten the cap on a 2 liter bottle.

This does not look like the Highline Arc model. It looks like the Highline Curve model.

@Myfyrbyrd1Ай бұрын
search google or the official Kohler website for Kohler K-30369-0 (this is the Curve, Lowes version of the Highline), notice the bevel on the lower section of the tank. Compare this with Kohler model K-78305-0 (this is the Arc, Home Depot version of the Highline). Maybe Kohler ships random tank designs to the big box stores.

I thought you’re not supposed to caulk the bottom in case of flooding
@craftsmanconnection2 ай бұрын
You can caulk 95% of the way around, but leave around a 1”-2” section on the backside, so if the toilet leaks, you’ll know about it. The bolts hold the toilet downward, but you don’t want to overtighten and risk cracking the toilet, so you can use the silicone caulking to keep the toilet from getting bumped left or right.
@josehuertas2441Ай бұрын
isn't easier to install the tank first??
@craftsmanconnectionАй бұрын
You can do it either way. For less weight when lifting it over the bolts, install bowl first. Installing the tank afterwards is easy enough, as it’s just 3 bolts, and a nut driver. As long as that toilet is sealed well to the drain pipe with a wax ring, I don’t think anyone will care how you do it.

Anybody kniw why the toilet bowl.keep little water inside the biwl
@craftsmanconnection8 ай бұрын
The toilet bowl has a built in trap, and don’t forget about some toilets have a hole in the ceramic that focuses a water stream to help flush. Some toilets have a bunch of small holes on the inside rim of the bowl for a more even rinse of the bowl. Did that help?
@bob66104 ай бұрын
Never caulk toilet to floor. If the wax ring leaks, the water would not flow out onto the floor, letting you know there is a problem. The floor under the toilet would rot.......
@craftsmanconnection4 ай бұрын
I only caulked about 95% of the toilet. I always leave a small section at the back of the toilet, so if it leaks, the homeowner will know about it. The floor for my clients is typically a concrete slab under the tile.
@craftsmanconnection4 ай бұрын
I caulked the toilet to the floor tile to keep the toilet from shifting left and right. The bolts hold the toilet down, but there is a limit to how much you can torque those nuts down. I always leave a small section not caulked, so in case of a leak, the homeowner would know.
