This video saved me time and money with a suggestion to use a piece of existing hose to replace the connection between filter and dispenser. Brilliant improvisation that bypassed a deficient set of instructions. Besides, I was lucky to have the exact set of filter/dispenser described in the video. Thanks!

so does this actually filter the water going into heater or just the cold water?

If you install a filter between your cold water supply and the water heater, then the water that comes out of the unit to the faucet (hot or cold) must be filtered. It looks like the filtered cold water goes up to the faucet, then back down into the heater. This brand of water heater does not include a filter so you will need to buy one separately. I think the op is using the Waterdrop 10UA Under Sink Water Filter System.
