Called Moen to replace the cartridge in my Moen sink faucet. Answered a few questions about the faucet (Model, serial #, etc.) Gave them my address. Got the new cartridge about eight days later. 5 minute call. No fuss. Moen fan right here.

@@martyvanord984 I have both Moen and Delta, they both supply free replacement parts and they have never asked for the receipt. Just the model #, good to keep the box or a picture of the box or at least the part of it that shows the model. I was just on the phone with Delta last week and the rep was very helpful & knowledgeable, is sending me free new cartridge, springs, seals, O rings for shower faucet. Oh, and once I called Moen and said the bottom of my kitchen faucet was rusting, what part do I need & without asking sent me an entire new faucet.

The problem is trends don't last 100 years, people are usually remodeling every 10-15 years and that number keeps falling. Manufacturers also play a big part in this and come out with new styles and trends in order to sell more. The goal is no longer to make something that will last 100 years, as long as it lasts until the next remodel.

When I built my house I bought the cheapest lighting and plumbing fixtures bought most at Walmart, As I was putting all the money in the guts of the house, knowing that years later I would have more money to upgrade the stuff that would be easier to replace. Here almost 20 years later I am impressed that the fixtures are holding up and still looking as the day I installed them.

They can’t be more than 5 years old, but all the lights and faucets are in terrible condition and need to be replaced.

I had a Moen kitchen faucet. Years later it had a small leak. I called the company and they asked what part and what model of faucet. I told them and they sent me the part free of charge. They even paid the shipping cost.

I've done the same with Delta. 2 Bathrooms and the kitchen after the city messed up and sent a bunch of silt through the lines. 4 days later and I had all the parts to fix the faucets - no charge. But these weren't $600 faucets, they were from HD and under $100.

I had a Moen rainshower shower head for 5 years and a segment of the plastic retainer broke off. Still useable but risk of being bonked on the head by a falling shower head. Called Moen and within one week I had a brand new shower head, free of charge.☺You get what you pay for or as my father-in-law used to say "If you buy cheap you buy twice."

Like how you prove that the commercial supplier and retail are EXACTLY the same thing. As a AO Smith employee I hear plumbers try and convince to only buy from supply houses, and they dont believe me when I say they are the exact same. Honestly the biggest difference most of time on products AO makes is which label goes on it.

​​@@bowez9 Not sure about AO Smith, but I know the other water heater manufacturers like Rheem have a separate product line for bix box stores and one for supply houses. So correct, they are not the same model, but if you want the metal drain valve and the extra warranty, you can't get it from Home Depot. If you want the cheap option you can't get it from the supply house. It's pretty dumb if you ask me. Both purchase options to give both options and let the customer pick!

@@benjewell2109 with AO that comes down to only what the retail customer orders. I can say there is 1 plant that supplies all of Lowes only. All the other plants make everything and supply everyone else (except for Home Depot for John R. Lindahl told Home Depot he didn't need them).

From all the reviews I've read about where to buy, and what I think @efrianlavine850 is meaning - I was under the impression that yes, the box, SKU, and everything on the outside would be exactly the same across the stores, but the parts on the inside and of the facuet would be of different quality. I was expecting him to fully open and cut open the Moen from Amazon, HD, AND the supply store to compare. I think this video misses the mark in clarifying that.

Landlord/investor here My entire career I have only purchase MOEN single handle products. Every house I buy, even if the fixtures are perfectly fine, I replace with MOEN. Much easier to replace that cartridge than a seat/stem/the whole fixture

Great informative video for folks not aware of the pricing and the differences you pointed out. As an aside, I am a great fan of Moen products and used them 6 years ago in a major bath reno. All look and work perfectly. I will add something that most trades people get wrong when they advise on where to buy: The Moen faucet you buy in Home Depot is exactly the same as the plumbing supplier IF it is the same model number/UPC. Where the brand confusion comes in is when the big box stores contract with Moen and others to make an "exclusive" model for them. It's often at a lower price point and reflects the lower quality you noted on the kitchen faucet. Many brands do this to get you to buy their brand ..sometimes to their detriment.

Now just a quick thing to point out. The Moen faucet doesn't have water flowing through the metal part you cut through. It's flowing through the hose for the pull out part. But still a better value, in my opinion.

I purchased a Moen two handle kitchen faucet some years ago. It was around $60 and the base is made of chromed plastic. We've gotten good service out of it so far. Just goes to show that even a "reputable" brand like Moen makes your more budget conscious products that perform well.

Some years ago, one of the manufacturers of small power equipment was advertising some as "made specially for Home Depot." They looked the same as the ones in Ace Hardware that were much more expensive, and the model number looked the same - until you examined it very closely and saw there was a letter after the number. The Home Depot ones had plastic parts, while the ones at Ace were metal.

I have two Moen one-handle metal sink faucets and two shower faucets at home, they have lasted +16 years and it looks like they will last forever. I had to replace the faucet aerator once about two years ago. If you keep them clean and shiny they will last for many years. Helvex are also high quality products, but they are in the high expensive ranking.

Plumbing contractors get a big secret discount on the price from the plumbing supply houses but then charge the customer full price. Same for electrical contractors and lights. I try to buy fixtures myself and just pay the installer for his hourly charges without a big markup on the fixtures.

That is half the income for any business. Your car mechanic does the same thing. He already made houndreds on the parts he sells you. And then charges 60 an hour to fit them. Buying trough a business acount puts a 45% discount on everything a car shop orders from the big autopart stores you buy the same stuff from yourself as a retail customer.. And the shop just charges you the full retail anyway on your bill. And the part supply store is still making a nice profit on the stuff they sell to business customers at a 45% discount. So any retail customer walking in is just a walking cash dispenser for them

I have a Price Pfister lav faucet and it's had been very good. Scrubbing Bubbles does wreck the handle plating - Price Pfister did replace it by lifetime warranty. Also, valve looks ceramic. Had to replace O-rings. Very pleased.

I used to work at Home Depot. Glacier Bay is the Home Depot brand product, it's targeted at people wanting the cheapest option. I tended to recommend Moen or American Standard as they were proven to be good quality, but that Glacier Bay price had them flying off the shelves.

I bought a Moen replacement faucet for my kitchen recently. The original was metal (not brass) and had badly corroded in many places including at the nuts which connect to the supply valves. I was lucky I replaced it when I did because the hot supply line broke off when I moved the reser a few inches. Very close to a flood! Well, the replacement in the same style now weighs nothing and is all plastic. And the price now is more than twice what I paid ten years ago, yes, right around $159, $65 originally but not junk quality. Not even sure if it is possibly to buy quality now at any price.

We shopped at a high-end plumbing showroom when we renovated our kitchen. I was disappointed to find that most of the hose spray faucets - similar design and same brands shown in the video - had a mix of chrome parts with some metal and some plated plastic on the same product. Parts looked identical so it was hard to tell. Most of the plastic components were cosmetic and not highly stressed by normal use, it's hard to tell how long they will still look okay. I expected all metal for the price point, and these were presented as higher quality models. My inference on pricing is that the manufacturers aren't really trying to squeeze out distributors; if they were serious about direct sales they would need to underprice other outlets, but distributor contracts prevent that (and it's commonsense if a manufacturer wants good relations with its distributors). It's risky for a manufacturer to cut ties with their distributors and go it alone with on-line sales, they are constrained by the etail market established by Amazon and Walmart and forced to join those marketplaces. It seems to me that manufacturers hew close to a high list price for appearance sake, in order to keep prices elevated, and if a manufacturer doesn't think their product is worth top dollar then who will? It should be noted these pricing models aren't limited to plumbing supplies, they apply to almost all consumer goods. Great video, btw. And a useful tip on the plastic compression nuts.

For years I've trusted MOEN as a reasonably priced, quality product with an excellent parts replacement warranty. I recently had an issue with a MOEN kitchen single lever faucet where the bell housing on the side of the faucet, where the handle protrudes, kept coming loose. When it failed, I realized the bell housing part was made from chromed plastic, yet the balance of the faucet was all metal. I phoned MOEN with the model number and they sent replacement parts, including the bell housing, with free shipping to my door in 5 days. What pleasantly surprised me, was that the replacement bell housing part was all chromed metal, rather than plastic. I appreciate a company that tried to save a few cents on a part by making it from plastic, but realized that it was a failure and they reversed their material decision to make the replacement part of higher quality metals.

I just watched this video. As it happens, the Moen faucet in the video is the very faucet I purchased a few months ago. As I recall, I purchased the faucet from Home Depot. Basically, I started out trying to replace the spout on a mystery faucet with secret sauce faucet. After talking to the people at the distributor, I gave up on the notion of repairing mystery faucet. I liked the look of the Moen faucet and had heard of the brand, so I bought it. Feeling pretty good about the faucet.

With Moen, if you ever have a valve body go bad , they will send you a new one no questions asked. Thats a $100+ part to buy from a plumbing supplier like Emco in Canada so thats a huge perk to buying their product.

I always buy Moen fixtures - they work, and they last. Lifetime warranty of parts is amazing for those who are in a house long term. It helps that I’m a 10 minute drive from a Moen corporate office with a parts service desk…but I the less, it sounds like Home Depot and other hardware stores will honour the warranty on certain parts as well. I have mixed experiences with Moen. However I usually use their shower valves because Home Depot will give you a free replacement if you bring in the old one for warranty. You might have to ask for a manager because not every employee knows about the parts exchange.

During 2023 I have replaced all of them due to leaking from internal failure. And because they are cheapo amazon they do not have parts available. I was once at either a Lowe’s or HD (can’t remember) to buy a Moen cartridge and the salesperson (trying to help) told me about the Moen warranty and recommended that I call them instead of buying it at a store. This was around 2015. So I called Moen and they asked how old was the house that it was installed in and I told them 1987/1988. They told me that was too long to be covered by warranty so apparently it really isn’t a lifetime warranty. The dollar value of the part is not significant enough for me to care about it being covered under warranty but I did waste my time calling them and having to drive back to the store a second time to buy the part.

Most faucets at the big box stores have a slightly different model # and have plastic or cheaper parts, like the sprayer head for example. Plumbing supply stores have the real metal faucets. Always compare the model #, I learned the hard way.

You can't go wrong with Delta. Made in the USA, solid built, excellent customer service that will take care of issues and send out replacement parts (or entire faucets) for free, and they are much easier to install than Moen.

I work at Home Depot and have always preferred Moen products since they are so good with backing their warranty. They first patented the one handle faucet in the 1950's and the cartridge has pretty much remained unchanged. Great video; I learned something valuable today. The pricing tactics are outrageously sketchy.

I am replacing two bathroom sink faucets made by American Standard. I bought them 15 years ago. Both are now corroding, and one has a small leak. I decided to go with MOEN. I checked prices online, and found them. The lowest price was on Walmart's website. Walmart's price beat The Home Depot by over $20.00 each.

I live in Wisconsin near Kholer Wisconsin, home of Kholer. They still make brass faucets and fixtures. They have a design center where you can see almost their entire line (and on the 2nd floor build dream kitchens and baths - which they keep changing - amazing place to visit every year). My 70 year old house has many Kholer fixtures and we can still get parts. Recently we replaced a cheap replacement kitchen faucet the previous homeowner installed when they redid the kitchen. We went right to Kholer found the faucet we wanted; and Kholer has an Amazon store where you can get it from - if your local plumbing supply stores do not have it in stock. Not the cheapest by any means... the base-plate that covers the 2 extra holes is in fact metal covered plastic. But the faucet itself is brass, it comes with its own riser hoses, and replacement cartridges will always be available (there was an option for a all metal base-plate). As all our 70 year old fixtures in the rest of the house tell us - buying quality always pays for itself long term.

For the last ten years or so, I've had great luck finding what I want (usually American Standard) on eBay. The sellers tend to have a pretty substantial variety of plumbing offerings, which suggests that I'm probably not buying stolen merchandise. I still would like to know where the sellers source their merchandise. Often it's open-box, which is OK with me as long as they photograph and list exactly what I'm getting.

I think some of these eBay'ers have contracts with the manufacturers/distributors/retailers to sell the returns. Something like 15% of goods are returned, mostly merely because the buyer didn't like the style. The goods are as good as new, but cannot be resold as new. So they are sold to liquidators who in turn sell on eBay for really good prices; maybe 1/3 of Home Depot prices. I finished two bathrooms that way with top-quality Kohler products; saved thousands. Got burned only once, receiving a broken item, but Kohler came through with a repair part for free. :)

I worked at Lowe's and had a very smartly dressed couple come in and the guy complained that the flow rate advertised on the box was less than what he got. YES, he used a graduated beaker and a stop watch!! Years later, I replaced my $100 Delta kitchen faucet with a plumbing supply one and the flow rate just about doubled!! There was a BIG difference in quality too. In most cases, the big box stores have cheaper quality "stuff".

The trouble with the 'higher' quality manufacturers like Riobel is replacement parts. The cartridges don't last any longer than a Moen but getting replacements can take longer. In my case Riobel took months to get me a replacement cartridge for a shower mixer valve. And removal and installation of the cartridge was needlessly complex.

I bought Boyel Living faucets from Home Depot...JUNK!...look great new but finish started failing and tiny rust forming around the joints in the VERY thin metal after less than 1 year installed. They did send free replacements, replacing junk with more junk lol. Only because we're selling did I accept the replacements. Can't cheap out in a bathroom or kitchen anywhere near water, especially hard water.

So a comment about the Moen warranty. I had a Moen hose that failed after 5 years, in order for them warranty it they wanted me to email a copy of the receipt. I didn't get email receipts back then and couldn't find the physical receipt. Make sure you file the receipts! I ended up buying the replacement from Amazon

I'm going to push back a little bit on your opinion/ assessment. I can go to my local Plumbing supply, and get a mid range kitchen faucet, that's heavier, and more solid than anything you could buy at the big box stores. For example, let use that Adler you have in the video...other Moen Kitchen faucets use that same cartridge, but the one I get out of the Plumbing supply in that price range will be more solid than the big box store faucet. The Adler you have in this video, I can't even buy at 2 of my local Plumbing suppliers, as it's more of a big box store faucet. 1 of my local Plumbing suppliers does offer that specific Adler, they are also the largest Plumbing supply in the world, and they do have an online presence for the homeowner to buy from. : ) With lavatory faucets, I'm getting a 50/50 drain or solid brass drain through the supply house, versus the big box stores. I am a Master Plumber, and I prefer the customer buy their own faucets, as I don't want the headache of having to return it if there is a problem. Plumbers got upset when the big box stores came around...we didn't, it was a blessing in disguise, as the responsibility falls on the customer 100% when they have a faucet for us to install.

The faucet you bought from Amazon is “builder grade”. I’d expect it to be junk. Amazon has dozens of faucets to choose from. They have ones that are similar to that Moen you have. I have three rental houses and purchased three that are similar to the moen. Came with the braided hoses, plate, etc.. That was three years ago and they haven’t leaked and are working properly. Not bad for $36.00 each.

I jiat replaced all of the faucets in my house. I got Delta and went online to research a little. Paid about 200 for the kitchen sink one and 110 for each of the bathrooms. Quality will last and actually save you money in the ling run.

Not always true. I bought a $60 faucet at Amazon(made in China) to replace a Kohler. The Kohler one with same style costed $350. It has been 4 years, the $60 faucet still looks new and works as day one. Today is cyber Monday, they even sell at $48, amazing.

I bought a bathroom faucet when I remodeled my bathroom. It was a direct-import I bought on Amazon. It was mostly a really good faucet; heavy, brass, ceramic capsule, and a superior mounting plate. BUT... The cut corner was on the "brushed nickel" metal plating, that corroded off in a couple years! I ended up replacing it with a hansgrohe faucet which, ironically, didn't have as good of a mounting plate as the direct import faucet.

Thanks for this video. As a property manager, I'm always replacing faucets. I never go with the cheapest....you get what you pay for! I never buy top of the line for the tenants either....not worth the investment. However, over the years, I've been told that the items sold in the plumbing supply store are a better quality. Is this true? Maybe it was true years ago but not now! Bottom line, nothing is built to last anymore!

With hardware brand names in retail there is another price called MAP: minimum advertised price. These are the sale prices below MSRP. But the retailer can’t advertise below MAP. They might sell below that in special circumstances but you won’t see it posted.

My Kohler kitchen faucet is dog S@3t. Started having issues 1.5 years of using it. I cost me $275 from Costco. Only thing that is good is the warranty for most of the big brands...Moen/Kohler. Home Depot brand kitchen faucet will send you parts and have you try to fix it. I have not received a whole new faucet from HD warranty. Amazon brand that I bought was like $50 for a kitchen faucet. It was pretty nice and it has lasted 4 years before I needed to change it out. I will just buy a cheap kitchen faucet from Amazon and they come with the hose.

I own that Moen facet with the goose neck.Installed it in my kitchen about 2.5 years ago, don't remember how much I paid for it. Really high quality, not had any issue with the product. Love the pull down nozzle.

I purchased a MOEN kitchen goose neck faucet with the pull down handle 3 years ago. Seemed to be good heavy metal quality and very easy installation. Recently developed a problem of the bell shaped cap at the side control handle started coming unattached and had to be pushed back on, only to fall off again a few days later. When I disassembled the unit, I discovered the bell shaped cover was chromed plastic, rather than metal. I sent MOEN an email and a picture of the problem at midnight. At 9:00 am the next morning I received an email back to confirm that they received my email and were investigating the problem. At 3:00 pm I received a second email, stating that they would be sending me a parts kit and full installation instructions at no charge, to be shipped within the next 24 hours. At 9:00 am the next morning, I received a third email stating that they had shipped by Express Post and provided a tracking number for the shipment. The parts package arrived two days later in excellent condition. I was happy to see that MOEN had changed the attachment method for the little bell shaped housing and the housing was now made of metal, rather than plastic. 10 minutes to install the repair parts and it's working like new again. You can't ask for better service than that!

We bought a couple of bathroom cabinets on Offerup. They came with faucets that are solid brass. Made in Germany. They're a traditional style, which we don't particularly like. However, we decided to keep them since they will last forever. It's sad that most faucets are just junk.

As someone who works in retail and I know costs of items and their retails…. As a general rule we aim for good margin but often settle for 25-35% and that may seem like a lot but it’s not. If something retails for $100 we probably paid about $70 for it. Then you add on the expenses of labor (exceptionally high) which is needed for a customer to ask “how do install this? Why is this better then that one? etc”.

MSRP is not the same as MRP (minimum retail pricing). MSRP is suggested price, same as a car window sticker price, and it can be discounted, put on sale, etc. MRP is set by the manufacturer and no one is allowed to sell below that price, some manufacturers also use MAP (minimum advertised pricing). Company I work for strictly enforces both MAP and MRP, think of Bose (i dont work for them) and how all of their products are the exact same price from any retailer. With plumbing distributors like Ferguson you need to set up an account with a business license to get 'contractor pricing'.

Glass fiber reinforced plastic and many types of nylon are actually much better under compression then steel/aluminum. They have way more stretch before breaking, they never corrode, they seal better on threads, and they have better thermal stability as the temp changes then metal. Also they never cause galvanic corrosion when the metals are mismatched on the hookup end. People love to crap on plastics but in many cases they are superior to metal especially the cheap alloys they use in consumer goods.

*Technically* price-fixing (by the manufacturer, or any other organization) is highly illegal. There are various anti-cartel and antitrust laws specifically prohibiting it in most countries. I guess they get away with it at the big-box stores, as the stores are not retailers, instead they are just middle-agents renting shelf-space out to the manufacturers. (Kinda' like supermarkets).

I've been lucky to get my reno materials on discount. Kohler kitchen faucet, originally over $200, for $80 at Lowe's. Replaced a Peerless of the same style and the difference is extremely noticeable. Luckily the Peerless was only $17 on clearance.

21 years ago I started buying rental home . The guy who sold me the first house told me to buy only delta . And stick with it . I found delta easy to fix and have a very good construction quality . Stay with delta ever since . And now that I have 23 units . Sticking with only 1 brand mean my junk drawer always have spare parts . Some people recommend Moen. But I still sticking with Delta .

I have two delta facets in the washrooms from the mid 90's. They are the big crystal ball for mixing. They never dropped a beat and I love them. Old school delta are amazing.

The way you set this up i was under the impression that you where saying the moen item from amazon was different then the one from home depot. That is why you got one of each. And the way you said that they produce in different places for different markets, implying that they ship a different product to amazon then they do to other retailers in the same box. It turned out to be just part of the explanation of how the supply chain works. Maybe it is just me misunderstanding or perhaps making this on a whim caused it to not be as clear as it could have been. I don't know. Just want to let you know. If i'm not the only one this happened to it might be something to pay more attention to in the future. Thanks for being a great teacher and motivator👍
