If you install these make sure you really do a good job sealing around the part that connects to the ceiling. It doesn't tell you to do this in the directions. I installed four of these and my electric bill went up. I discovered air was escaping around the tubes into the attic. It helped after I added a layer of foam tape around the edge of the diffuser.

That seems crazy. How much gap could there be, and how much air could be moving? And how much difference in the electric bill could there be for such a small change? It's a good idea, but more fascinating that you could attribute such a small change to a specific cause.

Solatube is the way to go with tubular skylights. They came and installed two years ago in my kitchen and bathroom. They were very professional and helpful from start to finish.

The base was incorrectly installed,don't be surprised if you have a roof leak, your suppose to place the base underneath the roof paper felt and place a bead of roof sealant underneath the base as well as above prior to installation, so is to prevent any and all roof leaks occuring.

These things bring an incredible amount of light into a room. I do wonder about the long term durability of the plastic bubble on the roof. And the heat loss through the lens on the ceiling which I assume isn't insulated glass. But it's hard to beat the ease of install compared with a traditional skylight.

Glad I found this video. Thinking about doing this on a flat roof that I’m changing a skylight out on. Was going to illuminate the skylight all together but the tube thing Looks like something that would work for me. Being in a northern climate I wonder if it could be insulated in the winter ❄️ like cover it. Or maybe there’s not that much heat lost with this thing.

I just watched another video and the owner had installed six of them. He noted that one of the mistakes he made was not finding tubes that had "air brakes" in them mid-way in the tube, basically a third lens in the middle to keep air from cycling up and down between the cold top in winter and the warm bottom. Of course, in summer, you have the opposite problem with the tube potentially becoming a heat conductor into the room below at the ceiling anyway. Good to know.

You should have removed the roof shingles prior to cutting the hole.

That's tubular skylight is only good for in the day time when the sun's out. Night time you will need a light fixture for night time use. OR dose the same company provide's an internal light for NIGHTTIME.

I saw one of these that had a solar battery powered light inside the tube that recharged during the day and then switched on when it got dark.
