No, An AP is not a switch. It is a hub. Its a shared medium and the devices compete for the bandwidth. Yes the routers and the AP's are like devices as stated by halomasterchief14. Because they both transmit on pins 1,2 and receive on pins 3,6 unlike switches which transmit on pins 3,6 and receive on 1,2. so you need a crossover cable. When we say "like device" it means they use the same combo of pins to transmit and receive.
@shahryarali172911 жыл бұрын
You are right they are LIKE devices.AP contains the features of both. Switch doesnt share the same Ethernet connection .AP uses the feature of switching the L2 frames based on destination address but it shares the bandwidth unlike a switch and more like a Hub.So my point was actually to explain that when we say they are LIKE devices when choosing the cables, we are not talking in terms of functionalities rather in terms of which pins they transmit and receive on which hardly matter these days...

@TalsmaBRT yep. An easy way to set it up, is to make sure both routers are set up with the exact same name, password and channel. Then the device will automatically swap between the 2 devices

If you use a Cisco AP, then most of the time the ISP modem will not allow connectivity; call them to make sure. For home connectivity, just use a wireless router from Linksys or Netgear, but use Cisco APs in an infrastructure environment where switches and routers are in place.

Good info, I used it once. I have a question if you don't mind, I have a single network plug in my garage because the wireless signal is really weak. Can I add a older wireless 4 port router to extend my range?

I have a question for you. I currently have a wireless router with two wired clients and a multitude of wireless ones. Behind this is another router I am using for voip. This all works perfectly well, my problem is that my townhouse is rather tall so the top floor has very poor reception. Is there a way to extend the original wireless network up there, or will I have to use an access point and switch between networks every time I move up or down?

Well I have my AP (LevelOne WAP-6003) working for the LAN but not for the internet. DHCP from the router works fine, it just won't route internet any access.

Why didn't you just use the "Router/WAP/Switch" divice to do all that since it's a wireless broadcaster? Where did you get the IP addresses you're using? Do you just contact the manufacturer or it's stated on the device?

Need some help. My apartment has free wifi for everyone (community wifi). I am wanting to connect an old router I have to the community wifi network and use my personal router as the connection for all of my devices. Can I do this without running a cable from the communities router to my personal router? Basically wanting to create my own network through the community network.

I have a question. This is all a little confusing to me. I have a desktop that I need to make wireless. I heard Access Point was the best way. My situation is I'll be moving into an apartment where the owner has a router already set up. All I need is a way to receive the signal on my desktop. I want to be able to get the best signal possible. Do you have any suggestions? Would a wireless USB be just as good?

I have cable high-speed internet but my cable modem only has one ethernet output(which is being used to connect to my computer's only ethernet port). How can make a WAP for my Wii to find if all WAP devices need a ethernet cable connected to create the access point and I have none available?

I do not like the idea of using wireless because of the security issues and my low(10 down 1 up)internet speed. I cannot stand it being any slower. My ISP said I have to use my wireless router,something to do with my non-wireless router using too many IP addresses. Today I noticed the wireless light lit up so someone was connected without my permission. Instead of learning all the settings and such which are seldom needed I took the case apart and cut the wires going to the twin antennas. I saw no easier way to disconnect or remove them and the tiny bit of wire I left on the board plainly marks where to resolder if I ever want to. My internet is back to it's normal speed and the wireless icon is not lit. It's only been about an hour now but it seems to have done the job. I suppose it may still put out a signal but with luck it is greatly reduced in range and the thief would have to come in and sit in my lap to recieve it,,,then I have the worthless POS right where I can strangle the life out of them! LOL,anyway,so far so good,low tech solution is working.

Really this is what you teach? Disabling the SSID IS a security feature. This prevents hackers from even "seeing" your wireless network. The rest of this video is confusing to say the least and I have been a Sr. Systems Engineer for over 15 years. You never configure your WiFi remotely this should ALWAYS be disabled, for security reasons. You need to explain some of the settings your applying as there seems to be some confusion as to what the heck your even talking about, not sure you even know. Anyone need things explained email me and ill give your the details you need.
@Marie203017 жыл бұрын
He said you can disable the SSID but not necessary a security feature.
@10diot7 жыл бұрын
What?? You disable the broadcasting of the SSID you cant disable the SSID as this is how you identify the network. Shoot im not going to watch this video as this was 3 years ago, not relevant in my world right now.

If your modem and router have the same IP your performance may suffer. I suspect that DHCP services are enabled on both the modem and the router. I assume your modem does not have a built-in switch (you only have one Ethernet port in the rear.) You know your modem is 192.168.1.1. I have not read your modem manual so I do not know exactly where you need to go to do this. Having said that First get to a command (dos) prompt and type “ipconfig”. The report will show four lines one of which is your computer's IP address and the Default Gateway. From what you are saying they are the same. Not good! 1. Log on to the Speedstream and disable DHCP. This will prevent the modem from issuing IP addressed to your computer(s). 2. Log on to the DLink and be sure DCHP is enabled 3. Change the IP to 192.168.1.2 4. Look for a place defining the IP range.. The firmware will either allow you to define the range or let you choose a starting IP. Set the range so that it will reserve 196.168.1.1 to 196.168.2.5 or set the starting IP 192.168.1.6 5. Now get to a Command Prompt and type “ipconfig /release” then type “ipconfig /renew”. This will make the router issue a new IP to the computer. Do this on all computers in you house. visit: www.ip-address.org
