Wow! This brings me back to the old days of Linux (SLS, Slackware, etc). I remember downloading the OG Linux floppy disk images off of Usenet or FTP sites at my college campus back in 1991/1992 and then taking those home to install Linux on my 80286 machine. The joy and feeling of accomplishment when I actually got a Linux/UNIX login and compiling my computer science C projects on my home PC instead of the campus' UNIX machine was awesome. Doing Arch linux this way isn't quite the same (no 3.5" floppy swapping) but it's darned close to what it was like back then. Of course also, no package systems, it was all on floppy and you didn't have to be connected to the internet (dial-up back then for me). Great video! Thanks!

I used to think the same, but honestly, it's mostly a practical issue. You can't really record the screen while installing, and you don't really want to watch a 30-minutes video of an actual computer screen. Unless you ssh into a testing machine or something. DT often uses KVM, which is pretty close to performance and prerequisites of actual hardware.

The saving on /home/dt didn't work, since the script does *nothing* to the system untill you tell it to install, so you can always recheck your config to avoid system breakage. The reason you couldn't save your config to /home/dt/ is because at that point, that dir didn't exist. It hadn't formatted your drive yet. The downside is that some of the options (like the KDE Desktop) come with bloat apps, but lack important ones (like packagekit-qt5 which is required to use Discover). "I've always argued that the standard command line installation of Arch Linux is easy and anyone can do it" Well, it's easy when everything goes right. I was unsuccessful at installing Arch Linux on a VM on my first attempt. I'm not afraid of the CLI and I'm not a novice with computers. I have experimented a little with Linux in the past, but I've only recently committed to it (I'm using Manjaro on my main system and my laptop has Pop!OS. Goodbye Microsoft). I tried following a video and the Installation Guide on ArchWiki. I kept running into issues. But I'm not complaining, because I learned a few things, and that was my main goal: to learn more about Linux. Of course, that was without the install script presented here. When I used the install script it was easy and I had no problems. I have a VM and a functioning Arch Linux installed. Now I want to go back and try it again without the script. I thank you for producing videos about Linux. It was one of the things that influenced me to take the leap from Microsoft to Linux and open source software.

GRUB is the only option because you are using legacy boot. On a UEFI system it defaults to systemd-boot, with the option to select GRUB instead. Also it is trying to save the configurations to the Live Environment filesystem. I feel an option to copy it to your installation post-install would be a good thing to add. That said, the version in the ISO has some bugs in the saving and/or loading of configurations. Mainly it doesn't really deal with the Disk Layouts properly. It'll pull all your other options in, so its sorta useful, since you only need to re-enter the Disks and Disk Layout settings. There is also a bug where if you enable multilib, it enables both multilib and multilib-testing. Annoying but easy enough to fix, as long as you remember to do so before installing anything from it, lol.

If the disk format breaks because of lsblk remove the flash drive boot disk, it copied the whole installation medium to your ram when you first plug it in. It will not error out anymore

I just tried the script myself using the 2022.05.01 iso, can't set any password as if the inputs aren't recognized. edit: rebooting fixed the issue, simply re-running the script doesn't. I have also noticed this script installs vim by default so there's no need to specify it ;)

In my testing, selecting the multilib repo also enables multilib-testing repo which is weird!!!

How do you set up the network just after the install?
@andreasbaumann69432 жыл бұрын
Was released on 1st of April 2021, maybe that's why nobody took it seriously? ;-) But it is a thing (a nice one). I recently also added it to the Archlinux32 ISO..

I tried it back when it was an early release and had similar issues with it failing partway through. I needed some brushing up on running commands anyway, been away from Linux for a while. Maybe next time I setup Arch I'll try it out

Could you show us how to use the saved configuration via json files. I have mine on a USB but no idea how to use them
@taidee2 жыл бұрын
Well DT, if you had configured Virt Manager for EFI boot, then it would give you extra options on for booting up and it uses systemd boot as default. You also missed configuring Network, but I think the mistakes were caused by the fact that you were talking and this script needs absolute focus. Otherwise this script is really good and very fast.

Hey DT. love watching your videos. There very helpful and informative. I however have a question and maybe a problem but not sure on the problem part just yet. I looked through your videos to see if you touched on this at all and couldn't find anything that stood out to me so that's the nature of this question and if you or anyone in the comments might know the answer. So the question is when I open up CPU-X and go to graphics to see what my amdgpu driver is it says Mesa 22.1.6 and when I go on AMD's website to look at the latest release it says 22.20. So I'm running basic Arch kde plasma 5.25.4 version and I was under the impression that arch is supposed to be a bleeding edge distro yet it seams like there a few.......well alot of releases behind when it comes to the drivers for my card. BTW my card it the AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT OC 4GB if that helps any. Any help here would be awesome as I'm trying to play The Surge 2 and it crashes everytime I get to the character creation screen. I know this isn't a linux thing as I have 243 hours logged but that was when I had my NVIDIA GTX 970 and before Linux killed support for older cards. Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help me out to either solve this or just explain the driver release cycle from arch and when I might see a newer driver. Thanks and have a nice day,/night. morning/afternoon/evening. 😃

I dunno.. when you set up Arch manually, you can't avoid knowing how little (or how much) is actually installed, how the drive is partitioned, the config files you create, edit, etc.. And that's a part of the experience. I wish archinstall script was more verbose about what it is doing. Or maybe I missed it as it scrolled past my eyes too fast / was cut in editing. Perhaps there's an installation log describing every detail you can read after the install? I'm about to install Arch on my new laptop, but I guess I'll do it the old way. I haven't done it in a while, so maybe I just want to experience the process again :)

What's important for me is, eventually you'll stumble upon problems. If you've stumbled upon them this early on it's better. It's both a testament and an introduction to controlling a system.

@@theodorealenas3171 That's right, and knowing exactly what you have installed / configured is a vital stepping stone in your troubleshooting process.

Lies. When you come to arch and install it, chances are you know absolutely nothing about it and all you do is copypasting some scripts online. It is a lot for you to assume that anyone installing arch, at least for the first or the second time, is reading wiki page full of jargons and spending the next few days just getting things up and run. Unless you have nothing to do and you are just installing linux for some weird social circle cred then go on.
@theodorealenas31712 жыл бұрын
@@just__khang to me copy pasting commands essentially doesn't work. Eventually you'll reach a dead end and either quit or read a bit. The Arch wiki is a bare minimum. It's not enough as is even. You won't get Arch in the end 1/3 times, with just the Arch wiki
@Booruvcheek2 жыл бұрын
@@just__khang @Minh Khang Lê Hàn 1) A lie is a deliberate distortion of truth. Sir or madam, are you telling me I'm deliberately misleading people? I suggest you apologize. 2) Your assumption about "chances are you know absolutely nothing about it" are simply incorrect. Arch is not a distro for first time Linux users, unless they heave strong will, are determined and specifically want to dive in at the deep end. Arch is famous for its DIY philosophy, which implies having to learn how things are set up. Reading Arch Wiki is absolutely essential in this regard, and if the user scoffs at it, saying its full of jargon, then why bother installing Arch at all? There are distributions far friendlier to people who don't want to learn about Linux (although in the end, they WILL have to learn, or go back to Windows or Mac).

DT you didn't config a network manager during install, so your VM actually doesn't have a network connection.
@DistroTube2 жыл бұрын
I'm aware. The installer is a bit weird in that it when you enter a sub-menu and escape out it always automatically moves you to the next entry. Which is not the expected behavior. I caught myself almost skipping several steps on this video because of that. In the end, I missed the network setup because of this behavior. But I wasn't going back and re-recording this video because of such a minor thing. These videos take way to long too record/edit. Besides, the 'archinstall' devs should probably know about this since I'm probably not the only one skipping installation steps accidentally.
