Install GTX 1080 on Alienware X51 R2 and Heaven Benchmark

I demonstrated how to install a GTX 1080 into the X51 R2. I also showed that the GTX 1080 can work under maximum load on the X51.
I also benchmarked the card in 4K. It works perfectly fine under factory clock. I was able to add 180 MHz to the core clock and 500 MHz to the memory clock. It went through 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra.

Tips after installing GTX1080 in X51 R2: ------------------------------------------------------------------- First thanks to @Aureliano Law for this video. Thumbs up. Here's my experience: Hello - I bought the GTX1080 and put it in my X51 R2. I love it. However you need to do the following: In some games (I saw this only in Ghost recon wildlands), your PC might completely crash and restart. After investigating and power monitoring it appears that the card is peaking and going over the 330W thus the PC will protect itself and shut down / restart. The solution is to download MSI afterburner and limit the card power to 80%. You will still get the same performance (clock wise, speed and very high FPS) and your PC will run smoothly without any issue for all games. I also noticed that the 1080 gets hots fairly quickly (comparing to the 1060 to the 760Ti) - the solution is also using MSI afterburner to change the fan profile so that the fans kick in sooner (on my peak gaming - 1080p on ULTRA, the card is at 77 degrees and the fans are at 66% - this is excellent. I don't like the card to reach 84 degrees especially in the X51 small box). The card is so powerful and you can run all games on ULTRA and super smoothly - FPS will be around 100+. Only Ghost recon wildlands is sooo demanding. But again it runs great on almost evrtg set to ULTRA. You get FPS~90. Far Cry 5 you get like 120FPS on ultra 1080p resolution. Make sure you limit the power to avoid shutdows. Now if you don't care about FPS>80 or 90 or >100 while playing at ultra, you can get the 1060. I tried it before putting the 1080. It fits perfectly in the X51R2, it's cheap and no need to any MSI afterburner edits. Its power consumption is 120W which is so low. Lower than the stock 760Ti. It runs Far Cry 5 and Ghost recon so nicely. Hope this is useful for everyone! The instruction on how to put the 1080 are listed by @Aureliano Law. Not difficult to do. PS: Putting an SSD in the X51 R2 is so amazing! you get like 5-10FPS plus. Recommended even with the 1060. Enjoy!

hello, I think the 1080Ti is too heavy for the X51 to handle - it's consumes 250W versus the 1080 at 180W. I feel the 1080 is the maximum you can put in the X51 330W without having issues. I have been using it for quite some time now and it's running good.

Have you run a 24 hour furmark test to test stability in the long run? I also own a X51R2 with a 4770 (not 4960) and have the 330W PSU and I am debating myself between the 70 and the 80 (for power and stability reasons obviously). I need to remove my HDD from the fan but I have nowhere to put it. where do you have it? Also, I would definitely advice not to handle your expensive PC in the rug because static builds up and can fry your precious. LinusTechtips has a great video on antiestatics

You have to remove the HDD. I can even overclock my GTX 1080 and finish Fire Strike Ultra. It can definitely work at factory clock without problem.

I don't remember which BIOS. The newest presumably. The first time you install the card the BIOS may not recognize. But you just need to update the driver.

I can also confirm that it works fine. I recently got a 1080 for cheap and after removing the fan and get the right 6-to-8pin adapter, everything went smoothly. No hangups, no BSODs, nothing. Don't be fooled by the low wattage of the 330W PSU. It's actually very efficient as long as you don't push things too far (i.e. no overclocking) The "blower-fan cards only" rule is absolutely true since an open-fan card will cook inside the case. Overall, I'm very happy with the upgrade and gives the X51 a much needed boost in graphical power.

I used a Gigabyte Turbo OC 1080, blower-fan. It didn't fit physically inside the case, but I modded it by cutting both the metal frame itself and some pieces inside the plastic front cover. Works fine but it's a mod that I wouldn't recommend due to how tedious it is. The founders edition is still the ideal choice to put inside this tiny case. Other brands might fit but YMMV

@@nahum1986 Personally, I wouldn't recomend the Ti due to its higher power consumption. The standard 1080 consumes 180W, while the Ti demands 250W, which may push the 330W power supply beyond its comfort zone (and that's saying something considering the 330W brick wasn't intented for a 1080 in the first place)

You can always add a 600w or whatever power supply and dedicate the power to the graphics card. Just leave it external to the case and run the power into the case.

R2 doesn't come with a monitor I think. I use Display Port. You can check if 1080 has the output your monitor uses. I use MSI Afterburner to OC.

Hi There, great video. I am abut to install a GTX1070 into my X51 R3. I have removed the fan and of course the BIOS is noticing the fan is gone. is there a way to disable the BIOS boot message so the machine doesn't complain about the missing fan. Alternatively are there any thinner fans I could put in it's place that you know of that will fit? Also, I notice the power cables for the Graphics card both feed off a 6pin connector on the mainboard. Instead of a dual adapter maybe just one 6pin to 8pin cable form the mainboard might suffice? What are your thoughts?

Yes, you can remove message in bios menu. You can remove onle fun meassage or any messages at all. Probably 60X60X10 4 pin will be fitted.

I have a Gtx 980 in my R2 that I overclocked, and I have it right around the watt usage of the 1080 (180 watts) and it works fine sometimes but in more demanding games and when using with vr I get restart shutdowns. I also get shutdowns when trying to game at 4K resolutions sometimes. Please let us know if you have experienced any shutdowns at all after testing under different and more extreme conditions.

I haven't seen shutdowns. But my R2 freezes once in a few days when I leave it running Einstein@home. But this happened even when I used the GTX 760 Ti. I think it's not related to power. Because when I run Heaven benchmark the power percent is 100% which means the GTX 1080 can run under full power. While running Einstein@home the power percent is merely thirtyish. What confuses me is the Kepler boost of 1080 seems quite unstable. It doesn't always maintain at 1800 MHz. Actually it stays at 1607 MHz most of the time.

+Aureliano Law I finally got my Gtx 1070 installed and it works like a dream. I over clocked it and it stays at about 70c temperature and the clock stays at 2000mhz . I'm maxing out everything even some games at 4K. I heard that allot of people have been complaining about sporadic throttling with the Gtx 1080. Not sure why it is doing that. Did you set up an aggressive fan profile to keep it cool?

I wasn't aware that it's a common issue actually. With my fan curve it stays under 80℃. But still the Kepler boost disappears most of the time. At the beginning of the benchmark it can go up to 1810 MHz. But shortly after it drops back to 1607 MHz.

if you don't have 330w psu you probably have 190w psu which is not enough....but you can buy external 500w psu then hook the pci e cable from external psu to the graphic card then one pcie cable from Alienware's motherboard..also there is trick to jump start the psu..which you search on youtube or check my youtube

Flip your proccesor fan upside-down, because the hot air has little space for geting out and the whole up-side of the pc will heat.

It came with a geforce gtx 660 2gb and some years later a upgrate it for a gtx 760 4gb, since a made this upgrade the computer makes a really loud sound, it looks a airplane taking off!! My power suppli is the standart, i think it is 240w. To change for a 330w power supply I need to buy just de power supply with the cable or I need to change something inside the computer enclosure? PLease I really need your help!

It depends on the fan, both the GPU's and CPU's. You can manually limit the rpm with MSI Afterburner. Also clean the dust on the fans.

I don't know, I find it hard to believe that a 1080 can work with a 330w power brick. Please upload follow up videos with prolong gaming benchmarks, if you faced any technical issues, game crashes and keep us well informed with your X51/1080 experience. I own an X51 R1 with a 330w power brick and I'm tempted to buy a 1080 and see for myself if it'll work. However, I'm smarter than that, so I'm depending on your videos to learn more before a place an order on newegg. Stay safe and be sure that the police can see your hands. 😉

If you haven't already, you need the x51 r2 power board to go along with the 330 watt brick. For you have that, the 1080 should work just fine

imgur.com/a/cC6j8 I have received my GTX 1080 today. It was a tough install as the two 6pin to 8 pin adapters made it very difficult to install. Like the KZbin video I had to move my hard drive to the site. That being said. I did the Unigine Heaven Benchmark as well as Firestrike Extreme Stress Test. No crashes, no shut downs. Thermal Throttling is definitely occurring, but after lookign at my 980 last night, it was too. That being said I have tried out a few games at 1440P on my ROG Swift. Doom on Nightmare settings never dipped below 85 FPS. Killing Floor 2 maxed out with Gibs and Fluids never went below 65, Rainbow Six has an average of 126 FPS Maxed Out. Payday 2 cranked at 1440P never went below 60. Black Ops 3 maxed out never went below 60. Hitman just flickered, however I think that might be a G-Sync Issue or DX12. I havent tried my Vive yet as I have to move around my living room to use it. I'm downloading Arkham Knight to give that a shot. If there are any games you would like me to test I can.

Please let me know if your vive headset works with the 1080... I have the oculus rift and I was concerned that running it with a 1080 would cause shutdowns as I have experienced that with testing a overclocked 980 with power to match what the 1080 draws. I have the 1070 now and it runs great but if I can get confirmation that the 1080 can do 4K gaming and vr with vive or oculous without shut downs I may switch my 1070 for the 1080.

+Rieck Hairston I don't have a true 4K display, but I can test DSR. I think it will be fine though as I have been benchmarking every AAA game I own and I have had no crashes or Shutdowns. I think you may hit thermal throttling before it can fully utilize all the power of the 1080. I will try the Vive and DSR and report back.

+Rieck Hairston I have tested VR, I played Ethan Carter VR with no issues what so ever, including while simultaneously streaming to my steam link. 4K DSR works well too. you should be fine as long as you have an SSD you can put on the side shown in the video above. I have left my PC on since I got it, and have benchmarked extensively. No issues.

+Dan G thanks, I'm going to stick with the Gtx 1070 as I was able to overclocked it to within only a 10% performance difference of the 1080 and maintain 68 degrees because of its lower power requirement. But it's good to know I can safely upgrade to a 1080 when I decide to do so.

+ROBB_X3 The small 1070 you mentioned, it doesn't have a blower fan like a reference card, correct? If that's the case, that card will send heat all over the X51's interior creating massive heating issues. A reference card at 9.5" long would be perfect, but I don't see any venders making those.

Never install a triple fan card into a X51. The chassis of X51 is small, which means that the fans will just push the heat back and forther against the GPU, and it will overheat very quickly. Much safer to use blower style founders edition cards in this machine.

i have an x51 r3.. I bought 3 cards... all are founder editions. I got the gtx 1060 good but wanted little more. so I got the gtx 1080... runs games awesome but then I switched to a higher game I was playing gta 5 with Max settings at 1080p for about an hour an half after that computer crashed an shut down. wasn't over heating so I ran a gpu stress test an it shut down right away so must not be enough power. so I got the gtx 1070 same thing...
