Install Mac OS Big Sur on $50 Dell Optiplex 7010

I've read a lot about putting Big Sur on this computer, and it seems like one of the biggest (or the biggest) obstacle is getting the USB 3.0 ports to work properly post-install. I'd love to see more content about that specifically! Great video by the way!

Is it specific to the front or back USB 3 ports? And is it that they don't work at all or they are only USB 2.0 speed?

Yes, I was using a friend's USB 3 external SSD with it and only got USB 2 speeds.

With clover and USBinject all, it works with USB 3 speeds on Catalina. Opencore also loads big sur on Mac mini 2012 and gets the usb3, and that is similar to elk Optiplex 7010….. there has got to be a way…..

I'd imagine it's just a matter of getting the proper drivers in OpenCore for the hardware in the Optiplex, assuming they exist

The Optiplex 7010 is still a good machine. I would recommend it for anyone considering starting out in the hackintosh world. I was finally able to get macOS Monterey installed both with clover and opencore bootloaders. Haven’t put it through the paces but it seems stable. I prefer using Catalina on it though.

Thanks for the comment. The only issue I've had so far is the USB 3 ports are only working at USB 2 speeds. Everything else seems to work really well

Looking at doing this myself - does the SYSTEM UPDATES feature work, and the APP STORE? I built one of the 'hackintosh' systems in the past and these features/options would not work. Which makes it useless if you cannot install anything or install updates. Also - should the USB drive be MBR or GPT with FAT32 partition?

I had follow th same steps but it didn't boot ones it's on the menu (efi, recovery,nvram, ect) then i click on the efi option and just do nothing. Any idea.

No, I never ran into that. You can reset your BIOS settings to default and then change the few that need changed for EFI to see if another BIOS setting is causing the issue

Internet connection is required for it to pull the operating system. The only thing on the USB is EFI and MacOS recovery

@@i12bretro I could make it work on internet but no disk is detected, i copy oc monterrey folder to oc folder master branch and then the hole master efi to efi open core folder and finally paste it to the USB drive, is that corrrect?

It depends on whether or not your Optiplex has intel hd 4000 graphics or not... some of the CPUs from that generation do, some of them don't..... If your CPU doesn't have the intel HD4000 graphics enabled, then you will need to use a graphics card to get graphics acceleration.

Update: I put it in and booted the computer. It booted into macOS, no driver loaded of course so video didn’t look great and also the usb ports stopped working? Not sure where to go.

It is downloading 13-15 GB and then has to install everything, so depending on your internet speed it could very well take a while.

I think so, the hard part would be finding the drivers for opencore to use for the 3010 hardware. I dont think you could use the drivers I used in the video for different hardware. This guide is very helpful dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Install-Guide/

I am using ethernet. I don't know if you can use wifi or not, but you have to have internet access for the install to complete

I think it requires ethernet, you could try sharing internet from a laptop or computer through an ethernet cable.

I’ve got the same machine 7010mt i7 3770 32gb 480gb ssd and a 256gb ssd rx570 4gb!! But using your efi ! Monterey won’t boot of it does the boot process takes even 40min!! (Anyway comparing with the same hardware I’ve noticed that windows 11 work more fast! ) why?!

I had issues with Monterey as well. Maybe try installing Big Sur and then upgrading. I haven't tested it, but I couldn't get Monterey to complete the installation

If you're running a 3rd gen processor, it's missing the AVX2 instruction set, so Ventura can't run

I believe there's ways to get Apple ID working, but I don't use it. Not sure about wifi, it may depend on whether the wifi chipset is supported by MacOS
