Are you ever going to take a look at FreeDOS? Definitely one of those open source OS'es that has had a huge impact but people don't really talk about because nobody uses DOS in the modern era. Great for retro gaming or using legacy hardware and software. When even minimalist Linux is too heavy, DOS is there to run your software.

Pidgin is still always one of the first things I install on a new install. I mainly use it for connecting to irc. I know there's probably way better options for chatting on irc, but I like pidgin & I've been using it for that specific purpose for around somewhat 10+ years now. I also still buy all my music as physical cd so asunder is something else I always choose to install....

Exactly my opinion! Pidgin is the very first app I instal on my distros and use it to interact with hundreds of my students (who live on facebook and never speak in class). Without Pidgin wonderful chat management in windows and tabs I would go insane.

Looks like a great slackware distro. I have used pure slackware and many others and used to enjoy the long complex setup process but I have to say I now much prefer easy to install distros like your Ubuntu, Manjaro and fedora. It would be good to see an easier to use for beginners slackware distro using the calimares installer.

I usually have multiple existing partitions and easy installers freak me out. What's nice about slackware's setup is that its bubba fix nature makes it easy to understand what it's actually doing, so you can skip steps and do it manually if you have different requirements.

LXDE is not dead. Also writing whereis systemD does not show you init system. IN most systemD free distro typing this shows results even if not components are used. There is fakesystemctl to trick apps need systemD. To check init system type: ```ps -p 1``` on a terminal. I wish you could show us slackbuilds in this distro.

Hey DT! The guys who used to do Sabayon Linux just released version 1.0 of the new gentoo-based distro they've been working at for like 2 years now, Mocaccino OS. I thought you might be interested in doing a review as you don't usually do Gentoo content and from what i see i think they could really use a hand making their work known.

Heh, having become somewhat of a laptop user I generally don't like to have numlock enabled by default, except on actual desktop PC with full-size keyboard... But having had my main laptop in a docking station for couple months now, and using a wireless keyboard with a numpad, I almost configured the login manager to turn numpad automatically on at boot - I installed an app called 'numlockx', which it would have required, before I remembered that I was actually configuring my laptop, and that was not something that I'd like to happen on boot by default :)

Hey DT. Can you go over what makes Main line versions of Linux distros different to each other (like Arch compared to Slackware)? It can't just be all about the package manager...
@marsdrums6298
@marsdrums6298 Жыл бұрын
It pretty much is. I used to have 10 or so VMs on a server and I used different distros for but I would install Cinnamon on all of them. I used Linux Mint as the base line model and set them all up to look like Linux Mint and it worked rather well and was an interesting experiment. The only thing different for the most part was the package manager. Everything was pretty much available software wise. I just had to use different package managers to get things installed. Gentoo and Arch were pretty easy to make look like Linux Mint because, installing everything by hand was required. Things like Slackware had a bunch of tools already so it had Mint Plus on it. A couple were like that as I recall.

What defines a distro is a pretty loose term tbh. When broken down, essentially all arch, for example, is is some documentation, the repositories, and a slightly preconfigured collection of other software (an init system, the kernel, etc.). So aside from setup and documentation, I'd say yeah, all a distro is is the package manager/repositories it enables. The rest is just how much it preconfigures the software and what software it initially comes with

I tried installing this over a used drive - which had windows previously on it. I thought that it would just be wiped out and written over by this installation. Well, it didn't work out. The install process detected the ntfs and fat 32 partitions and pointed them out and asked if I wanted to include them. I said "no" and thought they would just be written over. The installation failed to install the LILO boot manager because of that. It installed everything else except that. The take away - if you're planning on using and already used drive for this, make sure to low-level format it before starting - or just get a brand new drive. That's when I had a successful install.

you can install any software on any distro, but from what I understand the libre distros give you more hoops to jump through, because they assume that you're not wanting proprietary software if you're running a FSF approved distro. You probably could get it working, but it would be a big hassle, you'd probably have to maintain your own kernel with the firmware loaded in it, since these distros are all shipping the libre kernel.

@@overclucker I think they might have made several version of the Aspire One, mine has the 64 bits Intel Atom Processor N450. I did think it was 32 bits for a long time, it's possible it had a 32 bit version of windows on it when I bought it, I do not remember. In any case, after installing Salix on it without any issue I decided to install Slackware instead, I'm not sure why. I did full install and then an update which took a while on that slow machine, after that I was tired so decided to continue tomorrow. I haven't even tried to get into the gui (I set it to Xfce) yet. I did not think I'd still enjoy such an hands-on distro, I was wrong, heck I'm wondering if I might install it on my main machine.

For the password... couldn't you just go into the CLI, type 'passwd' under your user account and change the password to what you want? I do remember having to make a longer password for a distro (I think it too might have been Slackware based) and I just went into the CLI and changed the password. It didn't care that it wasn't 6 characters long.
