SpiralLinux is a rather new Linux distro that is built from Debian, with a focus on simplicity and out-of-the-box usability across all the major desktop environments. SpiralLinux was created by the creator of GeckoLinux, and like GeckoLinux, SpiralLinux offers a number of different desktop editions.

Hi there! Greetings from the creator of this distro (whose name I can't mention so that YT doesn't delete my comment). Thanks a lot for the coverage! Glad it worked well for you. The wallpaper not changing problem is indeed a bit of bug; you need to open the wallpaper in an image viewer and use the "set as wallpaper" option there. I'm glad that you see the value in creating these projects that heavily customize their parent base distro's configuration while still remaining completely dependent on the parent and *not* on me as the only maintainer. So the reason why I now have two projects is because openSUSE Leap will be going away after the 15.5 release, so to fill my need for a fixed-release slow-moving traditional Linux distro that works out of the box I added this new project to the repertoire. Glad you liked it! Have a good one, take care.

Hey there @@s.b.2088 👋 Very impressive that you are willing to maintain two distros with a completely different basis. If I undertand correctly you said that with the death of leap Gecko will be tumbleweed based only but you will go on developing it. How are you managing to split your time between Gecko and Spiral? Will you be spending more time on Spiral as the new addition? If someone were to switch to your distros now, which distro would you recommend?

Nice review, man! I'm using the MATE version of Spiral Linux on my main laptop, and dude, *IT'S AMAZING!!!!!* I never saw such an easy and lightweight Linux distro as it, and even the ones I saw aren't quite good. Congratulations to the creator of this distro (whose name can't be mention so that YT doesn't delete his comment) for making such an amazing OS. I just think it needs more theming, because the default wallpaper, GTK and icon themes are very ugly IMO. But besides that, this distro is amazing!

LOVE the creator of Spiral and Gecko taking a 100% compatibility installer approach. Both Gecko and Spiral are AWESOME! Too many times I see distros that are just installers that went a bit too far and end up with weird package version and dependency issues because they went just far enough to lose 100% compatibility (lack bug for bug compatibility).

"doesn't make it a less valid choice for others to use" I never made that claim. If anything I said the opposite; that being that using init systems such as OpenRC, runit etc are not a less valid choice for people to use in response to the OP's post about it being "crazy" to not use systemd (despite several distros not using it today and all distros not using it for many many years just fine prior to its creation).

Hi there! Greetings from the creator of this distro (whose name I can't mention so that YT doesn't delete my comment). I'm not too familiar with Arco, but I think that's approximately the idea. It's worth bringing out the fact that this project is an alternative installation method of Debian with a very different default configuration, but it's still 100% Debian at the core and is completely dependent on Debian's large package infrastructure and skilled maintainers, so the installed system doesn't depend on me for maintenance and security. I'm not sure if Arco has any of its own packages or repos, but this project here has no packages or repos of its own so as to maintain reliance on Debian.

But the installed system is completely dependent on the parent distro, so the installed system doesn't depend on me for updates. It's actually a fairly low effort project since I only need to release a set of ISOs every once in a while. All the rest of the really hard day-to-day work of maintenance and security and packaging and server infrastructure is directly from the upstream distro. Mine aren't technically distros, but spins on openSUSE and Debian. I created the one from Debian because openSUSE will be eliminating their Leap branch in a few years, and I need a slow moving distro like what Debian provides for some systems.
