Installation of Silvermine Motors Electric Power Steering on 1973 Datsun 240z
After 31yrs of owning my 240z, I decided to add EPS. I'm running 6deg caster, have a smaller diameter Steering wheel, T3 Quick Steering Knickles and Yokohama Advan A052's 225-45r16 tires on 16x8 wheels. The Steering effort at low speeds was very high.
I have not yet driven with the EPS but 1st impressions in the garage are good. Much lower effort to turn the steering wheel.

Hi Sean, does the GPS sensor work OK where you've mounted it. Also why is the wire to the tacho necessary, thanks Gary.

I ended up moving the GPS sensor to the dash next to the A pillar to get a more consistant signal. For wiring I just followed the instructions provided.

After being pissed off at the steering effort required in slow hairpins, I built an EPAS unit from a Saturn Vue. The sensor that I used does not change based speed/steering input, its a consistent assist (which kinda sucks on the highway, the car feels like on blades). Could you do a video of driving around different areas, say a parking lot, street, then a highway? I would be useful to see the how you are reacting to steering input based on the level of assist. Does the caster help with the return to center? I'm running a stock alignment, I notice that the steering wheel does not really like to return to center.

Still waiting for the salt to be washed off the road before I pull my 240z out of the garage but I will look to post a followup video in a few weeks.

I just posted a video of my 1st autocross event with the EPS. Of course the steering effort is much lower but I'm also I'm able to make quicker corrections when the back end steps out (you can see it in the video I just posted). I've also been driving it for a few weeks and love it! The assist feels just about right in all conditions. I believe the castor does help with the return towards centre.

What's the reason for needing an Ron signal if you are using the GPS speed sensor?

Sorry I don't understand what you mean by "Ron" signal?

@@sean240z sorry I miss-typed. I meant RPM signal.

@@arcanedefiance - I just followed the instructions that came with the kit. If I had to speculate, I'd say the GPS speed signal is used by the ECU to vary the assist inversely with speed, the ACC feed is the trigger to power on the ECU and the RPM signal is used to power off the system when the car is shut down.
