I finally needed an upgrade from my crummy original air intake system. Naturally aspirated old engines already don’t make a lot of power especially aged, I knew my truck was lacking the air it needed so I helped it breath better. I’ll walk you through the whole process of swapping out your old 2 stud TBI to a single and give you accurate single stud information.

That small tube running from the exhaust manifold to the air intake is called a "heat riser or heat stove" and only serves to add radiant heat to the throttle body from the exhaust manifold. It works with the TAC system. Good for cold weather, I live in a hot climate so I don't have one.

@@bretthair4249 I was wondering the same thing. Also wondering about fuel economy after this. Mine is sucking down the gas because the thermactor flap is broken off and it's sucking hot air. They don't make the oem anymore.
@bartbarnett2811
@bartbarnett2811 2 жыл бұрын
@@bretthair4249 yes it's actually really easy so you have to modify the inlet but basically you take the pipe and shove it through the bottom of the air intake and then put a lawn mower filter over the top. I'm not sure if that's explaining exactly how to do it. But there's no reason to have the air inlet heater unless you drive in areas that are below like 15° this mainly helps with cold engine combustion so that you don't clog up your Catholic converters. It's just another way to get the engine hot faster. I know it seems very controversy but I've had better luck with trucks that I start and just start beating on in the morning whether that be hauling ass or hauling a trailer then a truck I babied. started for 15 minutes before driving changed the oil every 3,000 miles transmission every 25,000 checked all fluids every 10,000 including dip and transfer case. I've only ever owned Chevys or Ford diesels

CA laws are funky but if you know how to interpret them you can work around them. I don't know chevy trucks, I'm actually watching this in interest of putting a TBi style intake on a carburetor in the interest of having a modern filter housing. Anywho, as long as there are no sensors or emissions related pieces in the air intake you can replace it. I'm pretty sure K&N and other systems are legal in CA because they reuse your original MAF sensor for cars that have one at the airbox. Since yours is merely a filter housing you should be able to put anything you want on it. If the guy at the smog shop complains about it just take it somewhere else. It's perfectly legal and smog complaint to change an air filter to a different style. Just because the tube changes or disappears doesn't mean any of the sensors downstream are affected by said change.

I just did a simple search, and found the factory replacement part for $6.99. I installed a Proform open air cleaner on my 92 350 and when I accelerate I can hear a loud air suction noise and goes away when I stop accelerating or if I accelerate hard so I don’t know if that’s normal or if there’s a vacuum leak somewhere, once I put the stock air cleaner it doesn’t do it anymore.

Did you have any trouble fitting the bottom part of the Edelbrock on the TBI? I got this same one and it didn't really fit on mine. It fit fine on the carb in my older truck but didn't want to fit nice on top of the TBI. I took it back and just flipped the lid on the stock air cleaner. Also removed all that tubing and crap. So it's basically an open element air cleaner now. Seems to work fine but an Edelbrock would look nicer.

Over the stock intake, you're not going to get any performance increase just from changing filters like this. There is a difference of about 5% of maximum air flow, but to even hit that amount of CFM you'd have to do a ton of of work on a stock TBI 350. New cam, heads, a lot of port work, bigger injectors on a better TBI, pistons, and a new intake, as well as some rapid evac headers. So no, unless you've done all of that, there's not going to be a difference in the Edelbrock filter over the stock filter. Not to mention that the stock filter is rates at over 2,200 CFM of filtered air, meaning you'd have to run at over 10,000 RPM on a 350 engine for a solid sixty seconds straight to even outdo what the stock air cleaner is capable of, and even then, yous have to have a perfect volumetric efficiency (which defies the laws of physics). So, no. There would not be a noticeable difference outside of appearance and possibly, noise.

@ltwig476 Жыл бұрын
@@the-dullahan Thanks. Most people don't understand how an engine breaths and waste their hard earned money on K&N and so on. Engines typically suck enough air just fine. The restriction is more in the exhaust. To gain significant power, you have to change cams and changing cams won't do you any good if your heads suck. Port some used vortecs, install a steerable cam, headers, 2.5 exhaust, quality tune and you gain significant power. Other than that, leave the thing alone and keep your money in your pocket.

There will be a noise difference but absolutely no performance difference. You can actually calculate it mathematically. Stock air cleaner is good for many, many times more CFM as the TBI can even produce. Even ignoring the TBI's abilities, we can go above and beyond by measuring the full engine displacement (350 cubic inches) times redline RPMs (6,000) and calculate max CFM that is even physically possible and that's only 1,215 maximum cubic feet of displacement per minute. While that's substantially more than the TBI can feed, it is still less than half of what the stock air cleaner can handle. A full open air cleaner housing like this can handle (barely) more than what the stock air cleaner can, but at only 350 cubes of displacement, an engine would have to run over 16,800 RPM for a solid minute straight to even reach the CFM that the stock air cleaner can handle. You can calculate max physical CFM of a naturally aspirated engine by taking the displacement inches, multiplying that by redline RPMs, and then divide by the cubic inches to cubic feet (there are 1,728 cubic inches in a single cubic foot). So in this engine's case 350 × 6,000 = 2,100,000 2,100,000 ÷ 1,728 = 1,215.27 You can do the same for a boosted engine, but you need to mathematically factor in the boost numbers into your engine's potential displacement, as under boost, the cylinders are holding more NCI of air than a naturally aspirated engine of the same displacement, due to the increased pressure that it is under.

Wonderful, you just got rid of your nice cold air intake in exchange for a hot air intake. Your engine's gonna be sucking all that hot air around the engine and your performance will drop. Cold outside air is preferable to hot engine air.

Presuming the space between your grill and three feet (it's more) and you're moving at 15 MPH, and your intake is two square feet (it's actually even smaller) your manifold would have to be over 4,800° to radiate enough heat to make a detectable difference in temp with this style air cleaner. I actually swapped mine to this style (a different model from Edelbrock that uses the exact same base) and used the punch out to run my factory ACTS with it. It actually runs 2° colder than it did with the stock air cleaner assembly, most likely due to the fact it has more air flow and over twice as much surface contact to the air. Switching to electric fans dropped it another 2° due to increased airflow in the engine bay.

@ClaireLadia
@ClaireLadia 2 жыл бұрын
According to the laws of physics, no, your engine would have to be WAY hotter and you'd have to be parked for it to make a different. After switching my stock assembly to an Edelbrock unit like this (different lid, sane exact base and filter) I still.connevted and use my factory ACTS and it actually ran 2° cooler than stock. Switching to electric fans dropped it even more.

Bruh made an "install" video for changing his air filter. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ Changing out a filter is regular maintenance, not an "install" or "upgrade". Even worse, he tried to pretend changing the filter boosted his performance.
@Respawntheskullpupper
@Respawntheskullpupper 3 жыл бұрын
You'd be surprised, by increasing airflow into the engine you're promoting a better burn of your fuel and actually increasing horsepower. The difference between the edelbrock and the stock filter setup is that the air doesn't have to travel as far to reach the engine. The stock one reduces airflow by forcing the air in from one location, instead using the air around it.
@the-dullahan
@the-dullahan 3 жыл бұрын
@@Respawntheskullpupper mathematically, that's bullshit and can be proven as false. The stock air cleaner on these cars is rated to be able to move over 2,200 CFM* of air at a sea level altitude. Now, obviously that's far more than the TBI or the engine can keep up with, but for fun, let's pretend you have a fuel system that can keep up and you have perfect volumetric efficiency (which is physically impossible, but let's pretend). Now, with those impossible attributes, you would have a miraculous 2,200 CFM sustained while the engine is running. Now, let's do some math and see how many RPM you would need to sustain in a 350 CI engine to produce 2,200 CFM. First, basic multiplication tells us that 2,200 cubic feet is 3,801,600 cubic inches because 2,200 × 1,728 = 3,801,600 Next let's divide that by engine displacement. In this example, we'll say 350 cubic inches. 3,801,600 ÷ 350 = 10,861.7 So there you have it. Unless you're running more than 10,862 RPMs AND sustaining that for a measurable 60 seconds, the stock air cleaner on this car would keep up just fine, and that's at sea level. The higher your altitude, the more RPMs would be needed to move the same volume of air. Math isn't that hard, you could have done this yourself. For future reference the calculation is: CFM calculation × 1,728 = A A ÷ Displacement = RPMs needed to exceed the CFM calculation.
