I'd terminate the SPD first and work the slack back to the breaker. I find it slightly easier 👌👍

Great video as always Mike. As an apprentice I definitely enjoy your videos the most, how much effort and pride/prep you put in your work is so nice too see. Also thank you for making these the amount I've learned of you is incredible so thank you.

I think the only thing I've disliked about that board compared to the isobar is the lack of extra din rail space next to the main switch for the spd to help keep that max distance down.

One way to help keep SPD lengths within the maximum permitted 1 metre is with shorting length C (Earth) this can be done by connecting it to a local earth bar within the serperate SPD enclosure. Any length after this local earth bar is not counted towards length C. Why I have no idea 🤔 However, it is a life saver when fitting 3-phase SPD's in a separate enclosure from the DB.

Except... that will pass regulation but will not mean that your SPD now works correctly with some sort of black magic! In fact even 1 meter is not really ok. You installed an SPD that is probably not so effective, or it doesn't work at all, so you basically wasted money and worse gave a false sense of protection.
@AGU-95 Жыл бұрын
@@alerighi Completely agree mate... In fact we should be all ensuring SPD lengths are 0.5 metres or less. However, when out of our control (For example in this video) then at least our work complies with current Regs and is not coded in a future EICR. This is more of a designer fault, but if the designer approves then we've done our best to comply with Regs.

@@E6EES The AC resistance is too high which causes a significant voltage drop on the wires between the SPD and panel.

Shouldn't the SPD be connected with a maximum of 50cm earth wiring?

Now you mention it, the vehicle entrance from that other video looks a lot like the contractor's entrance for QVC at that business park. If you are there, it's a site I did a bunch of work at, back a few years ago.

Youd didnt much say about the cable sizing in to the spd from the mcb. Or breaker size and why..

Does the spd cover the whole install how does that work pal if its just fed off its own breaker
@pierrekinbrand8 ай бұрын
The SPD is wired in parallel with the supply. If the supply voltage exceeds a critical threshold, then the SPD acts like a short circuit and clamps the supply, preventing the voltage from rising higher and damaging other equipment connected to the same supply. This transient over-voltage is short enough such that the SPD is able to function and suppress the over voltage condition before the breaker is able to open the circuit between the supply and the SPD. The impedance of the supply, the impedance of the wiring, the behaviour of the circuit protection devices protecting the SPD, and the specifications SPD itself all need to be appropriate for the protection of the SPD to function. In practice each regulatory body will have created a set of specifications that make sense together and electricians just need to be aware of this guidance. In this particular case, the wires between the supply and the SPD look a little long to my eye.

One note. The distance from the circuit breaker to the surge protector is too long, there are limitations in the installation instructions.
