With the timber frame complete, we're now enclosing the 2,500 square foot coastal Maine retreat. Today's focus: installing gypsum and Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) on both walls and roof. We'll guide you through our meticulous process, explaining each layer and the reasoning behind our methods.
As a bonus, watch the charming covered porches come to life - perfect for enjoying those serene, but short, Summer months in Maine.
Our team specializes in blending traditional timber frame construction with modern Structural Insulated Panel (SIP) technology, creating energy-efficient, beautiful homes built to last. The rich red hues of the Douglas Fir timbers add warmth and character from day one.
Follow our progress as we complete a timber frame and SIP shell in four days over three episodes.

Thank you so much for watching! We have found that installing the gypsum before the SIPs allows for far less taping and mudding. It also allows the timbers to naturally move without a gap opening up between where the gypsum would butt up against them.

Hey’s another great video. My question is “are the sips skinned with just drywall (ceiling side)or is it drywall/osb on the underside?” Looking forward to seeing you in January 👍

The roof SIP’s have gypsum laminated to the bottom of them! Our rafters are all 4’ on center so the seams die behind the rafter minimizing taping and mudding on the ceiling!

Japanese builders have a similar idea, but the way they attach the insulation is different: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4OukpaGdr6nhac

Very cool! One of the things we look to avoid in our builds is thermal bridging, essentially a short circuit in the insulation envelope. We have a video about thermal bridging we posted a few months ago!
