Tripp Lite 3000 Watt Inverter Install On My Truck | SHOCKING RESULTS!
Hey everyone! In this video, I install a 3000 watt Tripp Lite inverter into one of my 2021 Freightliner Cascadia trucks. I had installed another inverter on another one of my trucks a couple months ago, and thought it might be helpful and fun to share the install with the KZbin community! I hope it helps! Enjoy 😊

That’s a spot-on demonstration of installing an inverter. I did mine the exact same way, on my very first Freightliner FLD120, about 25 years ago when inverters started to really take off, as opposed to generators. I used mine to power my fridge, tv/vcr, satellite dish receiver, and microwave. There was a time in trucking when there were no such built in amenities in trucking. They have certainly come a long way in the ten years since I retired, but channels like yours keep me interested and “involved” in trucking. Keep up the enthusiasm and great work!

Great video! One suggestion for the future... When connecting to the batteries, the connectors are "across" a single battery and this will cause additional stress or discharge from that single battery. If you connect the positive at one end and the negative at the other, you basically pull power across the whole array more effeciently. :-)
@msyonta
@msyonta 3 жыл бұрын
Wait… sooo you can connect the inverter to any battery as long as it pos to pos/ neg to neg, and it will not go kaboom… well hell I guess that makes perfect sense being that all of the wires are connected to each other… 🤯🤯🤯 Thank you for the clarity!!!

Hi Shelby you done a great job, but want to highlight couple of suggestions which will help you in long run: 1- The chopping of the lugs on the battery leads to make the termination for the inverter side is not recommended. Instead you should have used pin-type lugs in order to protect the soft strands of the battery cables. Direct termination is good for first time only, but the second time a good percentage of the strands will get crushed and damaged due to the terminal bolt pressure. 2. In your next truck get all the battery cables prewired upto a terminal box fitted near the inverter so you need a small jumper cable between the terminal box and the inverter terminal. It will be very easy to install as well as dismantling in case of any maintenance. Otherwise i have thoroughly enjoyed the video and your expertise in doing all the fit out. 👍👍👍

For future reference, with those big 0 guage wires, when you expose all the strands of wire to stuff into the inverter, it is a good idea to tin the strands together. Heat the strands up with a micro torch and melt some solder into them. It will keep all the strands together and provide a better conductor to the inverter plug. You can do it with the shore power wires as well, if you want to. The reason I'm telling you this is those individual strands will break over time through vibration, and eventually the wires will come off. If they are tinned together, they act as one big solid wire that won't break. I've been working on this type of stuff for probably 25 years now.

Love your channel, But i would use 100 ohm 100 watt resistor on the ground terminal between the inverter and the wire, which will slowly charge the capacitor's, they can blow with a huge inrush current. Also using ferrules on the wires, will help keep them together. Also She is using true OFC wire, ( Oxygen Free Copper) Instead of CCA (Copper Clad Aluminum ), CCA is not idea and can over heat and cause a fire.

@Iron *Fe* 393.95 Only covers rating, labeling, visual indicators, accessibility, type of agent and secure mounting. Nothing about heat source. Generally the caution about heat source is relevant when the extinguisher is automatic such as a kitchen vent hood or engine compartment in a marine application. You don't want it going off when you are cooking steaks or steaming hard against a current. There is no way a manual extinguisher can go off when it's in its holder.
@johnschubert4665
@johnschubert4665 3 жыл бұрын
@Iron *Fe* They do give off heat, and you are right the air flow is the key. RV’s have this problem all the time. In a RV the incoming 120v is converted to 12v. . It’s called a “converter” and it is an inverter in reverse. They deal with 30A and 50A 120v and are rated 3,600w and 6,000w and above. Inverters and converters have heat and load sensors that shut the unit down until the adverse condition is corrected. This is usually automatic and the unit comes back online by itself. I would have a second fire 🔥 extinguisher in a different location in case you had a problem with the inverter or wiring in that compartment.

Its nice to see a driver that can actually work on their own truck. I would put in a smaller (2000 - 2400) watt pure sin wave inverter. A pure sine wave inverter costs a little more, but it is more efficient. You will usually hear a buzz from your microwave on a modified sine wave inverter that you won't hear on a pure sine wave inverter or when it is plugged into house current. The microwave will also heat up food about 20% faster on a pure sine wave inverter. Your electric motors will also run better (vacuum, etc.). When tightening stranded wire, go back after a few minutes and retighten them. They will often relax a little and you can get another quarter turn or so. Also make sure their is no wire insulation under any terminals when installing. That can eventually cause a short and potential fire.

Just a little advice, you may have to put a larger alternator with a higher output in, if you start putting a heavy load on the inverter the batteries won't keep up and you will using more power than your creating. High output alternator's are usually on emergency vehicles since they use a lot of power.

Ok girl, I need to send you some heavy duty side cutters, Carlyle from Napa, or Milwaukee side cutters BUT... your information and presentation far out shine the several videos I watched when putting in my inverter- I’ll reference yours next time!

Decent job. I really only had the same comment a couple times during the video. Box blade safety. She scared me a couple of times. But other than that, keep up the good work saving money by doing your own installs.

Getting ready to start driving for FedEx and as I was poking around I stumbled across your channel. I enjoy how you jump in and get your hands dirty and knuckles bloody. Great job! One suggestion that I have for anyone working on or around batteries is to wear eye protection. I spent many years working on golf carts with 36 and 48 volt systems and have seen several batteries blow up. Not worth loosing an eye or two over the inconvenience of safety glasses. I look forward to watching your other videos.

use a large 5w1ohm resistor to charge the capacitors before making a connection , the spark does not harm any of the equipment but it does put some stress on the caps and a scar on the connector . i hope u have enough alternators to provide 3kw at 12v (that's like 300amps and most trucks have 120 to 150amp alternator stock , u can buy 400amps alternators aftermarket . )

Nice video but ideally you should connect your red wire to the first battery and your black wire to the last battery. This way you make all 4 batteries work at the same time. You use your batterys evenly this way.

That’s awesome you did that yourself. I was actually going to pay someone to install a 3000 watt inverter on my truck but after seeing this video, you have inspired me to do it myself. Let’s see if I go through with it😂👍

How does this inverter work? How long will it work off a 4 battery cmv? Does it shut dn after 30 mins? Will it run with the truck running so the batteries will charge? How fast does it heat up to where it won't work or you have to shut it off? Give us a picture of all over it if u can! Thx

I doubt you will see this but I know this from Solar systems. Your truck batteries are in parallel, so when you hook up the inverter, you don't want to install the pos and neg on the same battery. You want to install the pos on the battery the furthest away and the neg closest. If you look at how your batteries are hooked up, it should make more sense. The reasoning is because it draws the current through the entire system and not just one battery and it will allow the batteries to all stay at one level and charge at the same rate extending the life significantly. Love the vids!

Thing for the future. Next time head to a trailer shop and ask for wire to run an electric tarp. We use them for hoppers and end dumps. But it's the right gauge and both the positive and negative are held together like a pair of jumper cables. Little easier to work with than chasing two separate wires.

The shore power is also used to charge your batteries. If you run a generator and not a apu you plug the generator into the shore power socket and keep yer batteries good to start up in the morning.

It's called stranded wire - and with that really flexible wire it will work itself loose with a little vibration- I have built electrical stuff all my life and am a retired master electrician and can tell you that you should tin those wires before putting them under those lugs - to tin them you melt solder into a metal cup of some kind - like a metal pipe cap or a copper pipe cup - melt the solder into the cup until its deep enough - then dip the big wires into the solder ...
