I installed this UV light to hopefully remove the brown stuff building up on the screen of my drum filter because it was starting to block the screen it seams to be very difficult to actually get off any other way.

Nice video once again. People always seem to have problems with the gaskets. You only need to use one on the side that does NOT have the collar you screw on. If you do it like this, you will not need any tape or sealant to make it water tight. Putting a gasket on the inside (in this case) does not work since the water will slowly leak across the threads.

Adam thanks for your info👍 think I know where I'm going on my new Tropical pond filter now. I really didn't realise that them drum filters were as good as that to take away such fine particles that would prevent sipporax from blocking up long term. Your vids are a good help people like me who are new to ponds and equipment for them. Thanks again.😎

If you have added the UV in order to kill brown algae (which grows in low light conditions), I presume the reason is because UV kills the algae and keeps your drum clean. At the same time, I would also say the reason you have the algae at all is because you are getting light into your drum. If you could eliminate that then the algaea would not grow in the first place and you would not need to run a UV bulb to kill it.

I assume the brown stuff on the filter is a type of algae that the UV-C lamp is killing, these are also used in garden fish pond filters/connected standalone units to kill particulate algae that causes green water so we can see the fish. They are used in water and air purifiers, so it might also partly sanitise the water so your fish won’t get ill?

Hi Adam how is the drum filter connected to the pond and pump ? Do the button drains go to the drum filter gravity feed and them from the the drum filter to a return pump back to the pond? Thanks

biofilm is the brown stuff will build on most surfaces and is healthy for the koi pond environment, but an issue for drum filters.

Hi, I know this was a while ago but I'm trying to find out if the uv light has a certain way of fitting on the plug? I'm currently fitting some a shower that have no been marked up so unsure what orientation they should be. Thanks!
@AdamJulyan
@AdamJulyan 3 жыл бұрын
This specific UV light has 4 pins on the end if you look they are different alignment so 2 pins are closer together than the other 2 so it will only fit together one way. Most Uv lights are either not polarity sensitive so it dosnt matter or will only let you plug them in one way so you can't go wrong.

Awesome fishes and filter. I would love to try your bakki river idea one day. Btw, one question on brown thing on your filter ? Does Uv light kill them? I have sieve filter(DIY) where sieve clogs due to brown build up like yours. I am planning to put uv light under the sieve(in water). so only uv light will fall on screen. Will it work ?

Why have you fitted it to the clean water side ?
@AdamJulyan

Because on the dirty water side the rubber in the drum will go brittle with the UV and it's a little more convenient in the clean side.

Sorry. What I mean is iv used sipporax for years in my filters and the media is fantastic. But do you not find that it blocks fast?
@AdamJulyan
@AdamJulyan 7 жыл бұрын
One of the advantages of drum filter, it does not allow any meaningful particles through so having the Siporax after the drum is not an issue I would not use Siporax after a Nexus I wouldn’t even use a river after one. So the Siporax does not get blocked by dirt. Adam

Hello Adam. Iv seen some of your videos and think there great. Can I ask why you got rid of your nexus filter? Was it no good. Do you prefer the drum filter to the nexus? Sorry if you have spoke about this before already! If you have I just haven't seen it to read it.😉 I am thinking of going for a pond but want it tropical for my predatory fish tiger fish dorado etc. And your videos are where iv been looking for ideas. Any help would be great.

Hi, I absolutely love drum filters they make koi keeping so much easier. A nexus will require you to clean it every other day some people leave it a week but in most cases it wants cleaning every other day. I can count on one hand how many times I have cleaned the drum filter in 3 years of owning them. But not only that the drum removes finer particles making the water clearer and giving your biological filters a much easier job. There are a lot of reasons why I would never buy a nexus over a drum but the issue still remains that you could buy about 3 Nexus filters for the price of one drum filter. Adam

Thank you for your reply Adam. Iv done no homework on prices of drum filters mate! Seems I'm gona be in for a shock then.lol So it's a far better way to filter a pond over the nexus and far less hassle exactly what I'm looking for. What are you using with your drum filter for biological filters then Adam? If you have done a vid of your full set up now can you plz give me the vid title so I can get an idea plz.😉😎👍

Every video I've seen that has a rotary drum system all display the same problem, the spray jets are spaced too wide! the spray patterns need to have a 50% overlap. One or two spray heads would improve cleaning immensely.
@AdamJulyan
@AdamJulyan 7 жыл бұрын
I would like to see a more powerful spray or one extra spray nozzle so they overlap more although it is a lot cleaner now with the UV light stopping things growing on the mesh. Just increasing the cleaning time in most cases makes a huge difference if you feel it does not clean properly extend the running time and it will help a lot. Adam

adding a uv light to a biege co polymer pp drum is a great idea if you want to destroy the plastic drum it will make the plastic go brittle and crack simona one of the world largest manufacturers of pp will confirm this statement

hi Adam another great video how often should you replace the uv light ? thanks mate Kevin from Wales
@jaaasgoed
@jaaasgoed 7 жыл бұрын
I think on average you can get 7000 to 8000 hours out of the bulb. That being said, if it still does the job, no need to replace it. I only run my uv a couple of weeks a year, so mine should last quite some time. I only use at the start of the season to combat algae in the water. Once the plants have taken of again after the winter, I no longer use it.

Kevin Eastment I think it's best not to put them IN the pond. Just like with the algae en parasites, uv is harmful to all living things, including your fish. You should not expose them to uv light. If you want any extra uv sterilization, you can always put another uv light in-line with your plumbing. But I think 2 bulbs in your drum filter should be plenty.
