Like your videos, this one was relevant to me having had a UV issue recently. It does take longer to clear a really green pond than you'd think - like you say, the filter's got to sieve out all the dead algae and there's a lot of it !

The 25w Yamitsu Algae Master unit on our 900-ish gallon pond has given us some grief lately after 15 years of pretty much faultless service. Waiting on a new electrics pack for it currently, up to now we've only changed the bulb 3 or 4 times and the quartz once. Still only using a mega black box filter, would love to rebuild it all someday with a bottom drain, drum filter and a small bog, but that'll have to wait for the numbers to come up right, lol!

I love my nexus 220. I think I enjoy cleaning the nexus more than keeping the koi haha. My micro k1 has never got as hard as yours but that’s probably because I like to clean mine daily. Some nice fish in that holding tank and great that you can now see them

You strange person 😂 I don't like cleaning it daily but i do need to probably get a better routine rather than waiting until its blocked.

Check your water hardness and calcium concentration in the system with the sticking K1 media problem, you may have a build up of limescale on the media causing it to cling together. Or anyother way this can happen is if you are using a flocculant or other substance to bind micro particles together into a larger particle so the filter can remove it, in chemical form these substances can get quite sticky and in our swimming pool filters at work it builds up a layer of slime on top of the filter sand and clogs it, which means we have to back wash to loosen it all up and send it to drain. A system that runs UV could have a similar effect, except its not going to produce a residual slime so its much less likely to clog your system but it could still be clogging the K1 media with binded micro particle caused by the UV doing its job. It may just mean your systems running the UV require more frequent backwashing. The only other solution is to run no UV and put canopy's over your outside tanks so the water is not exposed to direct sunlight. But imo UV is the way forward as its benefits outweight the flaws and maintenance uptake.

Hi Adam,at that stage that will be doing a pond rebuild end of this year and it next.Currently pond is around 8000 litres running a multibay which i modified to have moving bed of K1.Got 10 koi which will be added to with bigger pond,.Really unsure about filteration going forward don't want to spend 3K on a drum and tempted by nexus 220 but like you cleaning is not my favourite past time.Not sure if filtreau drum looks cheap even though its 1K.How did you find it?Or would Nexus 220 be btter route?

Hi Adam. I have a few koi that I’ve had for nearly 3 years now but just don’t seem to grow. Biggest is sort of 25cm. Bought them at about 5cm but just wondered if this is normal or not. If it’s not normal what can I do to get them to grow bigger. Water quality is great, it is a small 700 litre pond but will be rebuilding much bigger soon

What size uv would you recommend for a 10,000 pond? I run two 35 watt bulbs do you think two 55 watt bulbs would be better?
@AdamJulyan2 жыл бұрын
I't depends how much sun light you get the 35w is probably fine but if you have a problem with green a 55w would do although 110w would be overkill but might be required if the pond has no shade at all through the day.

It's rather ironic that the algae is caused by uv rays from the sun yet we use concentrated uv rays via things like the EVO to get rid of algae. Thank goodness some one thought of uv units for ponds. 👍🏻
@AdamJulyan2 жыл бұрын
Yeah never thought of it like that i wonder what the UV bulb actually does to the algae that the sun doesn't.
@aidandalton74042 жыл бұрын
@@AdamJulyan it passes by so close to the uv light that the nucleus in the algae cell is destroyed and therefore cannot divide and grow. Great video as always, you're spoiled with all the room you have and nice big garden. I'm GREEN with envy. 😉👍
