INSTALLING A CEILING FAN IN A SCREENED IN PORCH: The Complete Guide!

Recently I was asked to install a ceiling fan in the porch of a vacation home located near Oriental, NC. The screened-in porch had an exposed open ceiling (just rafters, no drywall) so the installation needed to be water-resistant from wind-blown rain. I used 1/2" PVC conduit for all wire routing with waterproof connections on the ends. The planning and installation took about three hours and went very smoothly. The homeowners are very happy with the final look and operation of the fan.

i would add a pull switch for the light on the wall so you could sit under the fan without the light being turned on.....i have seen the screw-in plugs with a pull cord and you put the bulb into the new part so it wouldn't be a big deal to complete this...I liked what you did

Cosmetically the line is not pretty to look at. Couldn't you have gone along the wall and then cut in to the middle of the room to install the box. The conduit would have been a lot less visible. Just a thought.

You have a good point. This was a free job so I went as direct as possible to save time and expense. If I would have done a paid job I would have drilled each board and routed conduit up out of view. But, you have a very good point that wouldn’t have cost much more and looked better. The “customer” was very happy with the result.

I’m guessing the ceiling fan has to be rated for outdoors?

I install indoor rated fans in porches if the rain can’t get to them. They might not last as long due to humidity but because of cheaper price it is done by home owners. As for passing code, any electricians know the NEC on this or have other thoughts? The fan in this video was probably not outdoor rated.

This was done for my house and yes, it is low. However, we keep a 6' table directly beneath it to avoid any unforeseen decapitations😅 We just needed air to flow around the porch. No issues in the couple years it's been put up and Jon did an incredible job.
