Episode #179 - Cutting up my own boat
Hello Friends, This is a throwback project video from the summer of 2020 when we started the massive project of redesigning and rebuilding our head.
One of only two real weaknesses of Alberg 30s is on the early models the laminated deck beam below the mast can delaminate and allow the rig to go slack and possibly dismast (the other known weakness is undersized chainplate bolts)
To solve this problem I installed a compression post under the mast and moved the pass-through to the V-Berth to starboard. This also allowed us to be able to enclose the head and turn it into a “wet head” so we could install a shower
This first episode in that saga covers me cutting out the bulkheads and Camille installing the compression post.

Wow I can't believe that you have number 55 and never had the laminated wooden support beam replaced with metal. Amazing! Glad you have a compression post now. Number 56 MoCuslin is at my club and is in poor condition.

I don’t know much about this history of this boat but it seems it was loved most of its life and not sailed very hard, also SoCal weather is good for boats

Good work guys. That wasn't a little job. It was nice to meet you at Minnie's Saturday James. After watching sailing Zingaro's last few episodes I've put some projects already in process on hold until I figure out how to add another bilge pump and a high water alarm.

Nice work James, having the help of your soul partner is priceless, I've been dreading carving up the interior of my early 70's Cavalier 32 literally years, she's in need of some serious love, I think you may have given me the inspiration, cheers from OZ 👍🍺🐶⛵😊

Wow, I see a lot of dumb modifications done on Albergs (outboard well) that would make Carl roll over in his grave. However these two peeps would probably impress him I believe.

I cringe every time I see someone cut an outboard well in a boat. I understand having an outboard on a boat with no motor but I can’t understand removing something as safe and reliable as an inboard diesel, butchering your hull and putting in a explosive gasoline unreliable outboard motor, makes zero sense

Question? Instead of the white home depot material for the shower walls, wouldn't it better to just use fiberglass? I mean, even if you use liquid nails, #1 plastic really doesn't like to adhere to things for extended period of time and #2 that will be a moisture/water environment and sooner or later, you'll have water trapped behind it....after a few years, you'll be getting mold and fungus growing in there. Fiberglass will seal and never ever leak plus, you need to make a water proof "bubble" so the shower is really waterproof and doesn't affect the whole interior of the boat.. Way more trustworthy....in my personal opinion that is.....
@SailorJames
@SailorJames 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah of glassing it’s would have been better but far more expensive and far more time consuming, I am not worried about it, if it fails in the future or seems like an issue I will rip it out and re do it , this was all shot last June
