I was lucky enough to have found someone who has worked on vehicles close to my 25 years of Automotive technician experience! I just ordered Fel Pro "Tango" oil pan gasket! Soon enough doing the timing belt! I'm at 105,000 miles and I got the 2001 crv 2.0 Rea time 4wd with 93000miles for $900. Like any vehicle...needed some love...complete exhaust and front brakes front tires and complete front struts! Thank you again sir!

Nice mod! I done other little mods like replacing all door lock knobs with rear passenger seat knobs so they will be easier to open with winter gloves. Modified driver seat to take under-seat storage box. Added 5th gen CRV cargo cover to cargo bay. Cut off the bottom of the cupholders on the cupholder tray, added net to them so tall drinks won't topple, same goes for middle cupholders. Added grab handles on driver side. I love the endless possibilities!

Nice! It never gets cold enough to really warrant gloves here. I didn't know the driver seat to be modded to accept the tray also. Good stuff

My wife has a 2001 Honda CRV SE. I and my wife hate the cup holders. They are to shallow and if you put a regular size or tall drink in any of the front cup holders, they easily tip over onto the floor with the slightest turn. You have to constantly hold your drink in the holder to keep it from spilling. I was thinking ( but she will not let me) of cutting out the bottoms of the cupholders so cups would settle into the cup holders

Was wondering if you know of a way to get more adjustment to the steering wheel. Is there another column or mod to get the steering wheel to come down a little more. That is my only complaint with the CRV is the bus style position on the steering wheel.

First, I'm sorry for the excessively long post, but I've had my RD1 for 22 of it's 25 year life and I know what I've had to do to maintain and repair it. Don't expect a great car for a cheap price unless something major needs repair, like a broken timing belt or it needs a head gasket or valve job. If it's a good car but needs one major repair, you could get a real bargain. If you want everything working and clean, expect to pay $5000-$6000 for an RD1 in excellent condition. I've owned my 97 CR-V since 2000 so all the miles, wear and tear were put on it by me. I know what was needed and I was prepared to do the work myself for 99% of the issues. I don't do welding (usually exhaust), tires, or alignments, so I pay for that stuff. Keep in mind you are buying a 20-25 year old car. I would ask for maintenance records, esp oil changes. They will probably be on paper. CarFax didn't start the maintenance tracking system until after these cars were built. If somebody cares for their cars enough to save maintenance and repair records and is willing to hand them over with the car keys, you're probably getting a pretty decent engine and transmission. Mine are all on paper, and some are in the electronic systems available. I have 2 folders of records. I have a lot of receipts for parts and supplies and hand written maintenance records because I did the work myself. When you test drive it, roll the windows down, turn the radio off, and put your mind to the task of listening to the car and feeling what it's doing. Does it start right up and run smoothly? Does the idle come down as it warms up? Are the valves ticking? Does it brake smoothly and well? Are there any strange creaks, flexes, feelings of instability at slow or fast speeds? Open the hood, unscrew the oil fill cap and look inside. You should see oil, but no sludge. If there is sludge, the oil changes were not done regularly or on time. Pass. There may be sludge around the outside engine parts from oil leaks, but if you see sludge inside, there are problems. Look for regular oil changes whether they were performed by the owner or a shop, and periodic trans fluid and all other fluid changes, too. There should be a brake fluid flush once or twice, the brake fluid should not look like dark green goop when you hold a flashlight up to the reservoir. Be sure the transmission fluid was changed at least every 100,000 miles . The rear differential fluid should have been changed regularly, also with Honda fluid only. The owners manual has the maintenance schedule in it and if it was followed and the car runs really well, it's probably ok. There should be records for timing belt and water pump changes every 100,000 miles or so. Coolant will be changed when that procedure is done. The coolant should be the green stuff or Asian blue stuff. Check for hose changes, cabin air filter and engine air filter changes, some kind of regular cleaning schedule inside and out (that may be personal preference). The first thing I check where I live is if the AC blows super cold. The heat should also work. The valves should have been adjusted regularly. The manual calls for every 30,000 miles. This is important because the Honda B-series engines don't have hydraulic lifters and must be adjusted manually. Beware of transmission flushes. Just a fluid drain and change is all that's necessary, and that it shifts well. Inspect the shifter cable under the car and be sure it isn't falling apart. If it is, deduct $250 for the cost of a Honda original cable from one of the online Honda parts stores and the labor it will cost you if somebody is replacing it for you.. I changed mine and it was a pain, but I was able to do it. I cussed a lot and busted some knuckles but it was a lot easier than the steering rack replacement I did. That was really hard. Check the rear trailing arms for worn out bushings. By 15-25 years you'll need to replace the rear suspension and may have to replace the front suspension a little more often. It will depend on the road conditions and how much off-road driving was done. Be sure they always used Honda transmission fluid and Honda power steering fluid. If they used anything else (except Idemitsu, they manufacture Honda's fluids and sell the specific products for each type of vehicle they supply) either pass on the car or be ready to replace the entire power steering system: rack, lines, and pump. Any other PS fluid will eat up the internal gaskets and o-rings and the steering system will either be really difficult or make a lot of noise. There is no regular schedule for PS fluid flushes, but it should be done every 4-5 years or 60,000 miles. This maintenance may be missing because it isn't a maintenance item, but it should be done. If it has always had Honda fluid added, a flush can be done and added to regular maintenance. If they used anything but Honda transmission fluid, pass, or be ready to rebuild or replace the transmission. There is a fluid flush method to fix a slipping transmission using Valvoline Max Life ATF with a quart of Lucas stop-slip added with the last fill. This method doesn't cause problems with the old transmissions. If somebody has already switched to this, it's probably a good idea to continue it. This mix is used for heavy off-road use more than normal driving, but some folks have switched to this fluid combo to save a transmission beginning to slip or hang. It often fixes the problem. If you are game, do a pressure test and pull the spark plugs and do a compression test. Or have a reliable mechanic familiar with these cars perform these tests. Poor compression means a big engine job is coming up, and a poor pressure test may mean you are about to need major engine work or cooling system work, like a blown head gasket. I know I've left some things out, but this list should pick up the major problems. Check the CarFax for accidents reported, number of owners, etc. Hopefully you'll find one with a single owner or just 2 owners and no accidents with all the maintenance records going back to when it was new.
