Installing a DAB Car Radio (2002 Ford Focus)

Another Christmas gift to myself was a brand-new DAB radio for my car. The original model had lost its FM and AM capabilities, while I was confident the aerial was fine.
Here, I show you how I quite easily installed it, using a fascia adapter kit and adding a windscreen-mounted DAB aerial.

I was told my 2002 Ford Focus would need a dedicated dab roof mounted aerial because of the heated front screen. You sound happy with the reception you get with the screen film dab aerial. Do you have the heated windscreen?

Hi, I've also heard of that. But I do have a heated windscreen (front and rear). Only problem I had turned out to be a fault in the radio itself, which I was able to get replaced as it was in the final month of warranty. Before this, I had a Pure Highway with a screen-mounted aerial and that also worked fine. I do find that, travelling across different regions, I may need to re-tune and scan the DAB frequency but I believe that's common with DAB and not any of the components. Hi Mark, Do you mean the standard aerial sticking out the roof? If so, yes, it will still transmit an FM signal and there's a socket on the back to plug it in to. I hope this helps. Olly

Where can I buy the adaptor kit as my car is a 2001 Ford Focus. I suppose it's exactly the same as the one on your you tube channel.

How are you finding the dab window ariel do you have a good signal

Hi Rob, Yes, I'm still getting a very good signal in most areas. That only really changes in very remote areas where even FM would be challenged (steep-sided valleys and combes). I hope this helps.

Wayne Tucker Hi Wayne - thank you. Yes, I'm very pleased so far. I think earthing the aerial to the frame helps to reduce static. I did lose signal at the bottom of Burrington Combe but that's to be expected, really. ;-)

Was thinking of upgrading , I've got vw t5 van, had 3 radio's in it none seem to get a signal , tried different aerials too, it's very annoying ! Think somewhere in van it's getting interference but unsure from where. Even tried a different battery source . Think I'll spend more money . Thanks

That does sound strange but yes, without being an expert, I'd imagine you're receiving interference from somewhere. I used to use a simpler DAB receiver with an unearthed winscreen antennae (about £15) and never had any trouble with that in my Focus or the Renault Kangoo I had previously (it wasn't compatible with my new radio).

I had to reset the device yesterday after it suddenly stopped receiving a DAB signal and only told me there was no signal... Hopefully, this won't happen again. It's easy enough to do and the only downside is that I lose my pre-set stations and settings. Just thought I would let you know.

To update this... My radio unit stopped working properly in December and a couple of weeks before the warranty would expired. The seller exchanged for a replacement unit and it's been working well since. I thought the problem might've been the aerial I install in this video but, that appears to be working well. I had bought a magnet-mounted aerial (before returning my radio) and, when I realised that aerial hadn't made a difference, I knew it must be the radio itself.

I thought also had to wire the aerial into s power source such as lighter port??

Apparently not. I've read that only applies when you're unable to connect via the socket.
