For lighting that stove, maybe look into a bbq sparker, or maybe the coleman gas pilot light that goes on a fancy weber charcoal grill. Your mixture is definitely rich, it shouldn't smoke that much, i worked on diesel construction heaters for years.

We have the Dickinson Antarctic on our 41' Monk Trawler. We liveaboard full time in Northern California and it is our sole source of heat. The outside temperature this am was 37 deg. F. This heater has been running continuously every winter (about 6 months per year) for 38 years, and does not require any maintenance. We have a 45 gal. diesel day tank that gravity feeds to the heater. It is about 10" higher than the heater. No fuel pump is necessary to the heater. The day tank was plumbed into the fuel system of the boat so that the diesel return line from the main engine fills the day tank - so clever. The flame in our heater is blue with a little bit of yellow (I wish I could attach a photo). Yellow flame means it is not burning correctly. Our stove pipe is approx. 12 ft. to the simple flue cap (shown on the Dickinson website) with no damper. When it rains and the wind is above 25 kts, there will be a little soot on the deck. Needless to say we love our Dickinson heater. Also we have a Caframo wood stove fan that sits on the plate of the stove and runs silently moving the warm air throughout the cabin. Having lived aboard boats for 50 years, I can truthfully say our Dickinson heater is the best, no maintenance item aboard. Hope you can work out the problems with your heater, as any item that is no maintenance aboard is a godsend. We enjoy watching your project.

Thanks for the info! It's good to know that it is indeed possible to get a clean burn. I think there are a few things that are not helping. The two 45 degree elbows and the damper being two of them. I think this is one of those projects that will get a redesign in the future. Glad you enjoy the channel! Blaine

In the future, look at the diesel boiler heater. Heat though the boat. My brother-in-law had one . For the expansion tank. He made a custom stainless steel towel rack with the rad cap on top. There is nothing better than grabbing a warm towel after a shower. Plus, running the water heater below deck . It kept the dampness out. Fair winds

Love the videos. That heater is more trouble than it’s worth. I live on a boat in the UK. Have a Kabola Old Dutch diesel heater. I light it in November and it burns until February. I shut it down and clean the chimney half way through. It’s silent. It heats a fifty foot boat easily. It also has a back boiler that I use to run some radiators. It’s almost identically to a Bubble Refleks which I think are more readily available. When yours give up working, these might be an option.
@OnboardTangaroaSeatrial

It does ok. Just a bit messy at times. When this one calves we will definitely look into better options. I even debated building one..... Those Kabolas look like pretty serious heaters though.

We are always looking for other channels to binge watch our dreams. Keep up the good work and everyone will find you soon. Just get those videos out. The channels I watch like this start of with the walk through- before video- and just keep up a type of vlog on it. We get addicted. 🤣 just saying that as some advice bc when you get to your page and video list, it is not set up like this. After watching that first video, I thought, "yes! I've found another one!", then saw it was not. Great news that you are going to get it going that way. I'll keep an eye out for it when it starts doing that. It's kind of like reading a book. You get the intro, learn the characters, see the problems. See how the problems are overcome, then-way later- happy ending. The same formula that HGTV perfected decades ago! 🤣

Hydronic heating on a boat is definitely the way to go. Never done anything as big as a 78 foot boat. Having said that I’ve always use just one loop. Controlling the temperature in each cabin by controlling the fan in the heater. My personal preference is Espar for what it’s worth. I always found them to be the most reliable in truck applications.
@OnboardTangaroaSeatrial
@OnboardTangaroaSeatrial Ай бұрын
The Espar heaters are definitely well known. Unfortunately they do not make any with a high enough BTU for this boat. The ITR Chinook was the only "marine" heater I could find easily at the time that offered a 50,000 BTU output, had on-demand domestic hot water, and engine preheat options built in. I chose to do two loops as I was trying to minimize heater cycling and only one loop is ever really active at a time on Tangaroa. I have also debated installing bypass valves at each radiator so there is only flow through the radiator when heat is requested. Thanks for watching! Blaine
@chriswoodward5368
@chriswoodward5368 Ай бұрын
@ thanks for the reply. I am surprised that Espar dose not make one big enough. As far as shut offs go, I can understand your reasoning. But here’s something to think of with a little bit of heat running through the heater core it will help reduce the dampness in the boat the same way 150 watt lightbulb burning all the time helps reduce the dampness. I commend you for all the work you’ve done all of the thought that you and your wife have put into this project. I do understand the amount of work that it takes to do what you’re doing and give you full credit for it.
@OnboardTangaroaSeatrial
@OnboardTangaroaSeatrial Ай бұрын
Thanks! I think 30,000 to 35,000 BTU was the biggest they offered in the espar units. This one at 50,000 BTU is really only barely enough. Good point on the heat in the rooms. Maybe I will leave it as is. Sacrificing some efficiency for other benefits could be worth it. We are trying to get everything mechanically sorted in time for our trip. The rest can happen at any time. Take care. We hope you have a great holiday season! Blaine

Would you not be better running a secondary tank to feed the heater so you can run it on kerosene which burns cleaner, so might not soot up as bad? Also worth mooching about for some 2nd hand eberpacher/ webasto air heaters either D4/D2 equivalent for some auxiliary heat these can aps9 be run via timer/ temp and start via mobile phone. Also use a webasto thermo top c to run a wet radiator system of that's an option for you , these are normally fitted to cars as well for preheating the cooling system in cold weather, seen a few videos on here of them heating homes via radiators or heating hot tubs as cheaper than electric here in the UK

Could you combine the fuel pump with gravity feed from halfway? I have a Taylors diesel heater from about 1970 with gravity feed and a small adjustable needle. A see thru glass shows only the rate of dripping of diesel into the stove. I'd like to have a window to see the flame. There is only a small opening with a sliding lid on top, from where I can have a look at the flame. I want to have the flame as blue as possible. That blue flame is accomplished by adjusting the rate of dripping. No sooth so far, except for what I got during the learning process - no manual. Had to work out the functioning outside of the boat to avoid having a burning wooden boat. Seems safe now that I have gotten used to how to preheat and adjust the dripping of diesel. To get it at its hottest I'd open the small sliding lid and let some extra air in, although it might not be advisable sine that gets the top of the heater red-glowing hot.
@OnboardTangaroaSeatrial
@OnboardTangaroaSeatrial Ай бұрын

@JonsAschan
@JonsAschan Ай бұрын
@@OnboardTangaroaSeatrial could be the diesel quality but I would not go with that. Cargo ships use oil thick as tar. They produce black sulfur clouds. The oil has to be pre-heated before it is possible to inject. I suppose your main engines do not produce soot, which says to me, diesel is ok grade. The color of the flame indicates the burning temp. What I would do is observe the flame temperature increasing/decreasing exhaust flow, airflow in, amount of diesel, where the flame is. Low or high in the furnace - should be relatively high. Draft stabilizer fully closed compared to balanced. Air from the extra vent cools down air and decreases temp, which again gives less air to the furnace, which makes it burn cooler, and less diesel burns before it goes out. It is about the balance of diesel and air in the heater. It takes a few minutes for the flame to find its new balance. Reflex and Taylors have manuals with tips unless yours has those tips. plaisance-pratique.com/IMG/pdf/079D_ownersHandbook.pdf

Do you feel you are capturing and storing as much heat as you could from your Kubota ? If you run the gen for a couple of hrs a day and were storing water jacket and exhaust heat in something similar to a rocket mass heater, you might burn less diesel overall.

We definitely do not use capture as much as we could. The hydronic heater has a buffer tank though and if we have any zones on it cycles fairly frequently. Stored heat from the genny likely wouldn't last very long. Honestly, at this point our best bet for efficiency is better windows and insulation. They are not awesome at the moment. Blaine

Its a product called DiBond. It uses a plastic core sandwiched between two paper thin layers of aluminum. It makes it fairly thin but rigid. Eventually we will trim out all of the seams with wood. The interior wood was in very poor shape and we needed it brighter inside. This stuff worked well and is easy to clean. It also does not absorb moisture. It doesn't have the classic look of wood but works great for us.

@@OnboardTangaroaSeatrial For NWP, a cabin heater is bare bones minimum . On a boat that size, I would consider radiant heat. Those systems are easy to build and there are tons of off the shelf components readily available if you can't or don't want to make your own. If you do install one, don't use series, use parallel or what they call zoning. They are cheap on fuel and you can run them off your main engines while under way.
@OnboardTangaroaSeatrial
@OnboardTangaroaSeatrial Ай бұрын
We do have a multi-zone hydronic heater as well that will be covered in this weeks video. It is capable of the brunt of our heating and hot water on demand. It is set up for two loops with three heaters on the rear loop and two on the front loop. Each stateroom has its own thermostat but the heater flow is in series for the three rear staterooms. I don't so much mind this as the radiators that are not in use just act like radiant heaters just to keep the edge off and the room demanding heat runs a fan through the radiator. It does work well but consumes a considerable amount of diesel if we push the system. Janis and I have learned to just use heating blankets at night which works quite well! Take care.

Your heater, I would suggest run HVO fuel in the burner, should burn cleaner and not mess the place down . And I would install a water tank over the heater, connect some pipe to bring the heat bellow deck. Bett you waste alot of heat with the short pipe to the outdoors
@OnboardTangaroaSeatrial

The biggest reason we don't use HVO is it's just another fuel we have to manage. The diesel is just easy. The main downside we need to address is the lack of adequate insulation and crappy windows. One of the main issues with this boat was lack of proper engine room ventilation. Or a stove you can burn almost everything in? For instance drift wood is for free! I see laying tons and tons of it on almost every beach/shore in BC/Canada all the time. Collecting firewood is respectively can be fun, making firewood too (sawing/splitting). For emergency you could have some sacks of cole on your boat. For instance Leo Sampson Goolden (Tally Ho) and Simon (Finding Simon) are quite happy with their choice and stoves/ovens. Simon even DIY built his device. It's still useful to have that Diesel heater in case you couldn't collect fuel for the all- burner oven. Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and especially health to all 4 of you.

Thanks! Glad you found us. Honestly the main reason we went with diesel is just for simplicity. We have a massive diesel capacity which doesn't even feel the heater consumption. Having different fuel sources just adds that much more that I have to think about and manage. For example, this heater has been running for three weeks straight and I have had to do nothing. I seem to be juggling so many things that anything I can do to reduce input is worthwhile. We don't really smell the diesel heater inside the boat but sometimes I catch a whiff of diesel exhaust when approaching the boat from the rear. Thanks for watching!

It's working great now however it just heats our main salon. The video coming out this weekend is about installing a hydronic heater. As for a blue flame...we have never seen a blue flame. It is orange very very orange. Thanks for watching. Cheers. Janis

how many BTU'S
@OnboardTangaroaSeatrial
@OnboardTangaroaSeatrial 2 ай бұрын
The specs for high are 16,000 BTU's which is definitely nowhere near enough to heat the whole boat. We have a second heater which is hydronic that does the brunt of the work and has a 50,000 BTU capacity. We will cover it in a later video.

@@OnboardTangaroaSeatrial Am I right thinking that a typical 'chinese' diesal heater has a 5kW output (I understand that the 8kW versions are not really) and that that is about 17000BTU's? So roughly comparable in heat output, if not in attractiveness?
@OnboardTangaroaSeatrial
@OnboardTangaroaSeatrial 2 ай бұрын
I have never used the chinese heaters so can't comment on that but this guy can comfortably heat a fairly large main salon/galley in all but the coldest conditions and that is with pretty tragic insulation.

@OnboardTangaroaSeatrial
@OnboardTangaroaSeatrial 2 ай бұрын
Do you mean the little white line that wraps around the floor on the right of the heater? If so, that's actually the 12v feed to the draft assist fan. The diesel feed is the stainless tube tucked tight against the side of the heater. I haven't got around to installing a proper electrical connector back there. Its like I tell my wife, if I say Im going to do it then Im going to do it. No need to nag me every year 🤣.

Cooky cutter clones that just fit one way of seeing the world and I think it would be very boring . We had an 80’ ex army boat and had similar adventures and if you knew a bean about the difficulties that are faced every day then you would not be spending anytime worried about how it is Presented and more time enjoying the fact they have gone to great effort to share their adventures. Anyhow this is their moment to shine in the way they know best.

It sure does but seeing as we live aboard in the winter we need a lot of heating. We definitely don't want to be filling tanks all the time. That's a pain. We have 3000 gallons of diesel so it was definitely the way to go. We have a second heater that is a hydronic unit which we will be going into on a later video. It is also diesel but burns very clean.

This heater, while it has its quirks, provides a nice dry heat in the main salon with no need to have an alternate fuel source. We have tons of diesel. It also provides a really nice look and ambiance. We do have the big boy hydronic heater down in the engine room though for the bulk heating. It will be in a later video.

Diesel heaters are filthy, option number 2 would be a pallet burner, they are clean, efficient and has dry heat, just a thought 😊
@OnboardTangaroaSeatrial

We thought about that and it was a possibility but the downside is that it would require a different fuel source. Seeing as we have a 3000 gallon diesel capacity it just made sense to use diesel. The Dickinson is definitely dirty but the hydronic that we have (which will be in a later video) burns nice and clean. Thanks for watching!

@OnboardTangaroaSeatrial yes hydronic heating has been around for years, heating radiators throughout a home so it should work on a boat, heating water in a boiler and distributing through pipes to different cabins, that will be a big job but I'm sure you will be up to it

Have had a Newport Dickinson for 3 years now and seems very clean. I run the fan assist on the lowest setting and that burns very clean...no soot on the deck. Go to Dickinson Diesel Heater best install ever and ask a question or leave a comment. SV Aquila Seattle.

The hydronic went in not too long after the Dickinson. We have battled a few hiccups with that system but I have made some modifications over the years that have improved the reliability. I still have to install the forward loop but the living quarters are nice and cozy.

my idea of a burner is a good old fashioned "Wood Burner" they burn most of your trash, anything that floats by, cook on them, even dry your socks on them. And as an added bonus I understand Canada has quite a lot of wood so I am told! Alas not every ones cup of tea but I like my burners to be burner and as a cold Brit love to be kept warm. .... PS as a new subscriber may I wish the family early seasons greetings and stay warm and safe.

That is so tue. That being said, one of the biggest drivers toward the diesel heater was the fact that we have 3000 gallons of diesel capacity. Running the diesel heater is just so simple as once its lit we pretty much can forget about it. I think it has been burning for about 3 weeks solid at this point. We seem to have found the sweet spot for it this year as well so the soot production has greatly decreased. Welcome aboard and we hope you and yours have a great holiday season as well!
