Apologies if it's already been stated, but one of the coolest things is the SSD being clocked at 133MB transfer, that is **literally** the total speed of the entire PCI bus, so you can truly be said to be getting absolutely, positively, 100% of the data movement capacity (speaking of just moving files from "a" to "z", etc.) that computer has or will ever have to offer 👍

Action Retro I’m looking forward to see if your Radeon 9200 runs well on your Beige G3. My Beige G3 hates my 9200 128mb VRAM and would crash all the time and I had to downgrade it to the Rage 128. I have an official Radeon 7000 coming overseas so I’m hoping it runs good on that one.

Flashed versions with cut-down roms don't have old world boot support, but if you desolder the flash chip and replace it with a new one big enough to write the entire rom it works perfectly.

I'm loving your content, but I feel like that CPU card is DOOMED without a fan on it. Put that lil noctua directly blowing on the CPU. Beside it, blowing across the fins... I understand there's no room on top. Just don't want to see a cool piece of old enthusiast tech die.
@ActionRetro
@ActionRetro 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah I was really worried about that too. The Sonnet instructions specifically say that the case fan is enough to cool the CPU because it's actually directly over the heatsink, like a half inch above it. That's why I added that Noctua though, and I'm thinking of adding another Noctua behind the processor to help vent out heat.

Not sure if this helps at all, but the upper case behind that second drive bay (the one next to the floppy) is actually drilled specifically to accept a cooling fan as well. I did exactly this kind of building/experimenting back in 03/04 in college, and when I was experimenting with overclocking, I found that adding that fan did make a small difference in CPU temp. I can't remember which direction I mounted it though, so you'd have to try both ways. Hope that helps. (Also, these upgrade cards were still available new back then and I can remember having to sit on my hands so as not to blow my food budget for a whole semester and then some on an upgrade card for a tinkering machine that wasn't even my primary. Good times.)

Oh god used to do this in the early 2000s in junior high and high school. Gotta find an OF bootable DVD burner now for it, and run Handbrake to rip a DVD. (I sold them as DVD archiving machines for a pretty penny) - maybe a game of Sims and Sim City 3000 and Sim City 4 for good measure. Starcraft because why not. Would be cool to see performance of those games on this also!

The extra fan where you have it mounted is ok but would be better if you could just tape it down near the HS so it blows directly across the HS.

Nice! Just got my SSD and adapter for my own frankenbeige G4 1.0 Sonnett system. (I'm one of those insane people that paid 700 bucks for it long ago.) Will be on it this upcoming new first week of 2022. TBH, you CAN fit the Sonnett card with it's fans, if you clip off the cage that's under the fan. If you do that, there's about a quarter inch of space once you drop down the internal shelf. The ATA cables to the drives is the biggest cluster-making crazy issue. I used mine to play back SD avi files to our old 27 inch CRT TV, using the old MPlayerOSX. The bottleneck will ALWAYS be that 67 Mhz bus. Went from that to a MacPro1,1 in 2007 - what a leap it was!

11:11 - wait, you could have a 1 GHz Power PC G4 processor without a fan mounted on top of the heatsink and it wouldn't overheat? Try doing that with a 1 GHz AMD Duron/Athlon processor (also from a comparable time where the PowerPC was still in use) and you would get a fried processor like in 20 seconds after posting.
@3rdalbum

I suspect the processor might be throttling down due to lack of cooling. The Geekbench results were the same as an iBook?
@GGigabiteM
@GGigabiteM 4 жыл бұрын
A 1 GHz PowerPC G4 draws substantially less power than a 1 GHz Athlon. The G4 uses 15-17W, while the Slot A Athlon uses 65W and the Socket A uses 54W. Not all CPU architectures draw the same amount of power at the same clock speeds. The purple heatsink on the Sonnet CPU module has enough mass to run for several minutes without overheating with no fan cooling. I have the 733 MHz version of this upgrade and it has no fans at all, instead relying on the power supply fan for cooling, it gets warm but not hot when the case it closed. It does need a fan if you leave the case open.

I watched this whole series (very cool upgrades btw) but it honestly drove me crazy seeing you not CLEAN the inside of that machine! I mean you put so much love and attention into it whereas the very first thing I would have done would be to at least go over the insides with a can of compressed air to get rid of all that loose case dust, if not a more thorough cleaning. I also agree that your sweet 1GHz CPU needs some direct active cooling - even if you have to get creative with a side-mounted solution blowing air across the top of the fins. Something.

oh God, next time you will break the plastic tab from the CPU socket... Don't just force the clamp outwards, the upper hole is for putting a flat screwdriver in vertically, push down the clamp first and then out. (or you can push it down with one finger and open it out with the screwdriver) Take care, those plastic bits sometimes do break and then you will have to mute the audio for protecting younger audience :D

The Sonnet G4 looks like a good upgrade at first glance, but it's really a dud. It basically cripples a 133 MHz FSB G4 on to a 66 MHz bus in the case of the Beige G3, or due to a bug on the B&W G3's chipset, also 66 MHz. I have a Sonnet Encore 733 for my B&W G3, and while it does provide a speed boost in raw processing speed, it slows everything else down due to the 66 MHz bus. There were other companies that made G3 upgrades using faster G3 chips, up to 1.1 GHz, which were faster all around than the Sonnet G4 upgrades. The only reason to go with a G4 is if you have applications that take advantage of the Altivec unit, which were few and far between. Otherwise, going with a faster G3 that ran at a normal 100 MHz FSB was the better choice. When comparing my upgraded G3 to my real G4 733 DA with a 133 MHz FSB, the real deal is quite a bit faster due to the doubled FSB speed.
@andycraig7734
@andycraig7734 2 жыл бұрын
I'd say it might have been a good product for someone who has upgrades already installed into their beige G3 and didn't have the $$$ for a nicer system at the time, but Sonnet's price on this CPU upgrade takes a lot of the appeal away in that scenario.
@christianclark1354

I wonder if you can get a PCI GPU that supports hardware offloaded video decoding and get KZbin playing properly. Might want to get a fan on that CPU as well, I don’t know if it has a concept of thermal throttling on these old chips, or if it will just damage itself. Especially as it seems to still be overclocked.
@BBHexKey

have you thought of retrofitting a laptop blower fan onto the side of that heatsink, or possibly sticking one to the underside of the drive chassis? would allow you to get directed airflow onto the heatsink without too much concern for space issues.

Also I'd recommend against kernel 5.x for right now... 4.x.x is still good. It's what I'm running on. How hard is it to get good troubleshooting info from the olden days of the web? Like I remember when I had a PDS G3 card alongside a couple of Digidesign cards I had to use an older version of the Sound control panel--it was either 7.6.1 under 8.1 or 8.1 under 8.6. I'm not at all sure how you'd figure that out now, although that was pre-Google so I don't know how I figured it out then either.

I had it out 3 years ago and noticed the brittle plastic, but still booted up! I wonder how a SATA/SSD would increase it's speed and use a light Linux and put the old girl back in service. The ram is my biggest concern.

I’m also adding a Global Village 56K modem in the PERCH slot (I’m going to show GlobalFax in the future because it was one of the coolest utilities ever made for the Mac) and replacing the power supply with one from my parts machine because it takes 90 seconds or so to go from a black screen to full video and I think the PSU is the bottleneck. I don't know much about old macs so forgive if it's a stupid question but can you still add more l2 cache externally?
@3rdalbum
@3rdalbum 4 жыл бұрын
No - the cache isn't exactly "external", it's soldered to the CPU board! Even if you could solder a new chip on there there's no guarantees the CPU would work with it - and the soldering for this is probably too fine for humans to do.

This G3-board ist able to boot 10.2 withou cheating. You have to use xpostfacto to boot max. 10.4. Thats all. Remember this machine originally was sold with 8.0 !

This system needs a 3d printed duct to route air through a modern laptop fan and over the G4 CPU heatsink similar something you might find in a 1U server.

My main laptop also can't view KZbin in HD, as its from 2004. But I've always hypotheized that if I put a modern, faster wireless card in it, then it would work. I haven't been able to test this hypothesis (the wireless card I ordered hasn't even shipped for some reason...?), but I think its worth trying to see if its a proper solution. Nonetheless, great video!

@eDoc2020
@eDoc2020 4 жыл бұрын
@@IoIxD Your computer can probably play the HD video stream outside of the web page. VLC can play KZbin, at least it could in the past. If it still works with the latest KZbin updates you may have some luck using that. Also, have you tried looking at Craigslist or FB marketplace, etc for a newer laptop? If you ask around locally you could probably find a Core 2 Duo laptop for under $30. At least you could a few months ago, the used market has gotten more expensive with more people working from home. You might want to get in contact with a local computer shop if there is one near you, they may have some systems which may otherwise be getting sent to recyclers.

That thing boots faster than my 2010 MacBook! Well, so does my Mac mini G4... Is there a way you could install a WiFi card, or even go past the "max" RAM? If so, that thing could actually be even more usable today

Should throw an ssd into your MacBook. My 2010 MacBook has an ssd + macOS Monterey, runs pretty well. Also may want to consider upping the ram to 8gb at least if you haven’t already
