Apologies if it's already been stated, but one of the coolest things is the SSD being clocked at 133MB transfer, that is **literally** the total speed of the entire PCI bus, so you can truly be said to be getting absolutely, positively, 100% of the data movement capacity (speaking of just moving files from "a" to "z", etc.) that computer has or will ever have to offer 👍

@ActionRetro4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah I was really worried about that too. The Sonnet instructions specifically say that the case fan is enough to cool the CPU because it's actually directly over the heatsink, like a half inch above it. That's why I added that Noctua though, and I'm thinking of adding another Noctua behind the processor to help vent out heat.

Not sure if this helps at all, but the upper case behind that second drive bay (the one next to the floppy) is actually drilled specifically to accept a cooling fan as well. I did exactly this kind of building/experimenting back in 03/04 in college, and when I was experimenting with overclocking, I found that adding that fan did make a small difference in CPU temp. I can't remember which direction I mounted it though, so you'd have to try both ways. Hope that helps. (Also, these upgrade cards were still available new back then and I can remember having to sit on my hands so as not to blow my food budget for a whole semester and then some on an upgrade card for a tinkering machine that wasn't even my primary. Good times.)

Nice! Just got my SSD and adapter for my own frankenbeige G4 1.0 Sonnett system. (I'm one of those insane people that paid 700 bucks for it long ago.) Will be on it this upcoming new first week of 2022. TBH, you CAN fit the Sonnett card with it's fans, if you clip off the cage that's under the fan. If you do that, there's about a quarter inch of space once you drop down the internal shelf. The ATA cables to the drives is the biggest cluster-making crazy issue. I used mine to play back SD avi files to our old 27 inch CRT TV, using the old MPlayerOSX. The bottleneck will ALWAYS be that 67 Mhz bus. Went from that to a MacPro1,1 in 2007 - what a leap it was!

11:11 - wait, you could have a 1 GHz Power PC G4 processor without a fan mounted on top of the heatsink and it wouldn't overheat? Try doing that with a 1 GHz AMD Duron/Athlon processor (also from a comparable time where the PowerPC was still in use) and you would get a fried processor like in 20 seconds after posting.
@3rdalbum4 жыл бұрын
I suspect the processor might be throttling down due to lack of cooling. The Geekbench results were the same as an iBook?
@GGigabiteM4 жыл бұрын
A 1 GHz PowerPC G4 draws substantially less power than a 1 GHz Athlon. The G4 uses 15-17W, while the Slot A Athlon uses 65W and the Socket A uses 54W. Not all CPU architectures draw the same amount of power at the same clock speeds. The purple heatsink on the Sonnet CPU module has enough mass to run for several minutes without overheating with no fan cooling. I have the 733 MHz version of this upgrade and it has no fans at all, instead relying on the power supply fan for cooling, it gets warm but not hot when the case it closed. It does need a fan if you leave the case open.

I mean you put so much love and attention into it whereas the very first thing I would have done would be to at least go over the insides with a can of compressed air to get rid of all that loose case dust, if not a more thorough cleaning. I also agree that your sweet 1GHz CPU needs some direct active cooling - even if you have to get creative with a side-mounted solution blowing air across the top of the fins. Something.

@GGigabiteM4 жыл бұрын
The Sonnet G4 looks like a good upgrade at first glance, but it's really a dud. It basically cripples a 133 MHz FSB G4 on to a 66 MHz bus in the case of the Beige G3, or due to a bug on the B&W G3's chipset, also 66 MHz. I have a Sonnet Encore 733 for my B&W G3, and while it does provide a speed boost in raw processing speed, it slows everything else down due to the 66 MHz bus. There were other companies that made G3 upgrades using faster G3 chips, up to 1.1 GHz, which were faster all around than the Sonnet G4 upgrades. The only reason to go with a G4 is if you have applications that take advantage of the Altivec unit, which were few and far between. Otherwise, going with a faster G3 that ran at a normal 100 MHz FSB was the better choice. When comparing my upgraded G3 to my real G4 733 DA with a 133 MHz FSB, the real deal is quite a bit faster due to the doubled FSB speed.
@andycraig77342 жыл бұрын
I'd say it might have been a good product for someone who has upgrades already installed into their beige G3 and didn't have the $$$ for a nicer system at the time, but Sonnet's price on this CPU upgrade takes a lot of the appeal away in that scenario.
@christianclark13544 жыл бұрын
I wonder if you can get a PCI GPU that supports hardware offloaded video decoding and get KZbin playing properly. Might want to get a fan on that CPU as well, I don’t know if it has a concept of thermal throttling on these old chips, or if it will just damage itself. Especially as it seems to still be overclocked.

Anyone got the Sonnet Encore softwares for 500Mhz / 800Mhz and the 1000Mhz ?

Are you able to boot Mac OS 8.1 off of these still after upgrading them with this G4 card? Also, do you know if a "Molar Mac" G3 would be compatible with an upgrade like this?

So actually if I had known all of these in this video, I could've extended my 1998 G3/233s life span for another 2-4 years or so.

I have a VIA card with 3 via chips that does firewire, ide, sata, and usb. getting those things to work is a nightmare, especially on windows

CAN IT RUN LEOPARD NOW?

No, a G3-board can't run 10.5 leopard.

I’ve used a Pentium II 350(@420)MHz machine with 384MB PC100 SDRAM and IDE hard drive (@UDMA33) to play KZbin video on the Firefox browser few years ago, it not loading as slow as this. why this takes so long time to loading it?
