Installing a Sub-Panel for Heater & Welder - 50 amps - This sub panel will allow me to power my 240v welder and heater. If you're looking how to install a sub-panel this video should give you the general concept.
This subpanel was wired off of my main panel which is 100amp using a 50amp breaker in the main.
The generator I will be installing is the predator 9500 that will be used for some mobile welding and for home power backup. I will be installing a generator transfer switch soon.

Get a few ground rods driven and connected into the ground bar, as it's Code required for a properly grounded system being a detached structure subpanel installation.

I like Miller welders. That’s what I ran all my years at Bath Iron Works. We ran feeders off from inverters. Most of the inverters were 354’s. I would LOVE to be able to get a new 354 inverter and feeder and harness but I just ain’t got that kind of money right now lol. Plus some 💩 head stole my new husqvarna 565 with a 32 inch bar on it. Oh well it is what it is. I saw a ford very similar to your black one the other day. It was a 4x4 half ton straight cab. It said “camper special”. It had the most leaf springs I’ve ever seen in a half ton. It only had a 300 6 with a 4 speed. I about 💩 myself when he found out it had 4:56 gears. My buddy is gonna use it for a plow truck. I’ll get a pic and email it so you can see it. Sorry for rambling!! Nice job bud and as always WORK SAFE 🇺🇸🇺🇸😎😎

Nick. I have recently bought a house with detached garage that has 10/3 out of main with 30amp to a sub panel in the garage with two 15a single pole circuits for lights / garage door opener. I am wondering if I can add a 30amp 10-30 for EV charging in that sub. (It has room for more breakers ). The ev would pull max 22a with that 10-30 plug. Thoughts ?? Changing the wire to the garage would be a pain to make it 8/3 or 6/3 so I could do a 40 or 50 in the main panel to feed the garage sub.
@NickPixelTV
@NickPixelTV 2 жыл бұрын
How far away is your house from garage? (Only concern would be voltage drop). From the sounds of your comment - Your buried 10-3 is protected by the 30 amp breaker in the house. (If you draw over 30 amps total in the garage) the breaker in the house will trip thus protecting downstream. So you should be able to install a 30 amp breaker in garage out to the charger and keep your two 15 breakers but i would only run say lights and such if you’re charging to stay under the 30amp draw and to prevent the breaker from heating up or getting close to a trip. (Always double check with your local codes etc and if your concerned have an electrician double check your work before you go live) but you shouldn’t have a problem with 22amp. Hope this helps you out. Thank you for the comment and time here

@@NickPixelTV wow. That was quick!! Thank you!! Garage is about 50’ from house and he did 10/3 to a box in the attached house garage. Then transitioned to a much thicker underground cable to the sub panel in the garage. In fact I think it’s a 6/4 or something. One lead not used. But yeah. Then in the remote garage there are two 15a single breaker s. I think I’ll shut that whole leg off and open the sub to see if I can tell what that buried wire is. The previous owner was an electrician!!! 😂

Nice work! I just purchased a 7500 watt garage heater that I want to install but I don't have a 220/240 outlet. I have a subpanel in my detached garage that's about 30 feet away from my house with a 2 pole 40 amp breaker and 4 single pole 20 amp breakers in the subpanel. I pulled the cover and I noticed that the 40 amp breaker wasn't connected at all and one of the 20's was connected to 1 of the 120v outlets. I'm going to run that single outlet together with the other outlets on the left side of my garage and use that breaker for my garage door opener. I purchased everything that I need for the 220/240v outlet but I'm skeptical because my main breaker is only 100 amps and the wire coming from my house to the garage looks like it's 8 gauge. And I was told that I needed a 50 amp breaker for my heater (which I purchased) because it would draw a little over 31 amps on start-up. So would I be ok running that 50 amp breaker with my main only being 100 amps? Thanks and again nice work! #subscribed

Actually I have to make a correction to my comment....I recently moved into my home and apparently I didn't pay enough attention that my main breaker does have a 200 amp service panel in the basement but I also have a 100 amp service panel on the first level. So I can run my heater in the subpanel in the garage with no issues and then again for the video.

@@bunky021543 there is no longer 220 in America.70 years ago yes, then the power reqmts went up so they changed taps on xfmrs to 230, years later again to 240. Remember if you want more Power P it comes from the Voltage V multiplied by amperage I..... P = I X V. So if you want more P you have to have more I or V. Do you and most Americans want to re-wire your house with bigger diameter wire to accomodate more amperage (I) or have electric company move the transformer taps to a higher voltage, that is much cheaper than you rewiring your house.That wasn't hard was it. Ask older folks if they remember talking about 220, 230 and 240. And guess what. Your TV, vacuum cleaner, drill motor, the kind the old timers plugged into the wall outlets did run on 110 then 115, and then today 120 today. Where did those numbers and voltages come from. Put a tap in the middle of the secondary and ground it, then beween the neutral ground and each end of the secondary you get 120 VAC. DIVIDE 220, 230, & 240 by 2 ...you get 110, 115 and 120. VOILA

@@robertstack2144 I know there isn't a 220 I just made the statement because a some people still say 220 that aren't familiar with 240. Hey Nick, Great video! I've watched about 2 dozen and this one has helped me the most so far. So Thank you for that. So heres what we have going on. We have a main pole that has 200 amp service to it. We have a shed that is about 350 to 400 feet away and we'd like to install a sub panel to feed an A.C. and a fridge. I think I need a 50 amp breaker at the main box then run #6 UF wire to the sub panel which will have two 15 amp breakers, one to feed an outlet for the A.C. and one to feed the outlet for the fridge. Does this sound like the right set up? Also would I need to worry about voltage drop or would this set up enable The A.C. and fridge to run without fault even with voltage drop. I have literally just started to learn about all this in the last week. Treat me like a toddler when answering please. haha

I have a tricky multiple choice question, hopefully someone can with more knowledge can help me out A White/grey wire in a feeder circuit ________: A)Be bonded or have a circuit breaker B)Is the largest wire in that circuit C)Should not have a voltage to ground My notes: On the main panel, neutral is connected to the bar that is BONDED with the panel, the green grounding wire is also connected to the same bar. (so does that mean the answer is A?) In the sub panel, the neutral wire is connected to the neutral bar which is ISOLATED from the metal box with plastic between them, the Green grounding wire is separated and is connected to its own bar that is bonded to the sub panel box. In the circuit that this question applies to, --------- “The neutral wire is going to be sized larger than the Green grounding wire” (But that doesn’t mean it’s the LARGEST in the circuit right? Because the two hot wire could be the same size) --------"The neutral should have no potential difference(voltage) to the ground" (does that mean the answer is C?)

Is your install according to NEC code. I have two 20 amp circuits ( through a sub panel) already running to my garage but I want to install another 240 volt 50 amp electric vehicle charging station circuit circuit through underground conduit to its own sub panel in my garage so I can have a local disconnect. It’s seems similar to your installation but I can’t get any straight answers to whether or not it is code.

i think they change that code book once every 3 or 5 years.... little changes here and there mostly.... but also local code's have different demands also... get a hold of an updated code book and read up on your situation and then decide if you want to contact local electrical inspector.

@robmespeedy The Home Depot guy did not understand. If a panel says 125 amps, that means the manufacturer has rated the bus bars (they are 3 bars in the back of the panel that the breakers latch onto) can have a 125 amp draw on them without over heating. This is it's MAXIMUM. But there is no reason you can't put a 100 amp (or lower) breaker as the main disconnect, it just means you now have a 25 amp headspace on the panel.

Can you help me just bought a house the garage has three 15 amp circuits and one 20 amp circuit. I want to run 220 also. The inspector said there is a jumper wire that is improper.

Justin, What is the the feed wire size that runs from house to garage and does it run to a sub panel? How many amps is your main panel? How many amps do you want in your garage?
@Justin-bb7oi
@Justin-bb7oi 3 жыл бұрын
@@NickPixelTV I do not know the wire size but the house panel is a 100 amp and the sub panel is in the garage. The Garage has the 4 fuses. I think it's a 50 amp sub panel? Appreciate you replying

@@Justin-bb7oi it sounds to me like the wire youll need between the panels is a similar setup to mine make sure its #6 wire between the panels you would have a 50 amp breaker in your main panel then the #6 feeds the sub panel in which case you can break that down to your 15’s or 20’s or even a 30amp for your 220. With a 100amp main in your house youll want to be cognizant of big devices pulling power so that you don’t trip the main.

Thanks for the video! I'm trying to do something similar here. Trying to run 220 to my basement from the garage where my main panel is. My question is, Does it matter how many amps Im installing in the sub panel? I noticed you have a 50 amp breaker feeding your new panel. But you have a 30amp + 40 amp breakers in the sub panel.... the math doesnt add up in my head.
@NickPixelTV
@NickPixelTV 3 жыл бұрын
The breakers in the sub panel are protecting the wires that go out of sub panel to devices. For example if you have in your main panel a 50 amp breaker you would run number 6 to your sub panel, if the sub panel has two 30 amp breakers and you were to actually try and pull 60 amps the 50amp breaker in your main would trip protecting the number 6 wire that feeds the sub panel. I hope this helps

My brother in law ran water lines and electricity to my garage where my parents live. The problem is that when my mom turns on microwave and minisplit ac it trips the breaker and also a combination of other appliences. The garage has a lot of outlets and I think they are on a 20amp breaker with a 14 gauge romex cable and brother in law also got electricity from the exiating 220 0r 240 outlet in garage to add more stuff. When breaker trips the whole power goes out in garage and also in kitchen of the main house. I think circuit is overloading.I was thinking of adding a 60amp circuit to main box and running a new line to garage and in garage add one of this boxes Eaton Corporation Br816L125Fdp 6 Circuit Main Lug Load Center, 125-Amp??? Also will I need to cancell all existing outlets and start from

I know this comment is a year old, but for anyone else facing something similar. 14 gauge (14-2) wire is only rated for 15amps. If your brother-in-law put a 20 amp or higher breaker on 14-2 wire, this is a fire hazard. If the breakers are flipping, then increasing the amperage of the circuit is NOT the solution, but how you would burn your house down. Essentially to solve you problem, you need to have the garage lights on their own circuit, the garage outlets on their own circuit, the microwave needs to be on its own circuit, and you should probably put the fridge on its own circuit. It sounds like your brother-in-law just tapped into the kitchen circuit and ran it out to the garage. Probably not the best idea given both areas often use high amperage devices (blenders, microwaves, coffee machines, saws, welders, etc.). Hope that helps.

it might help to see if your camera has a manual focus or some kind of focus hold setting so it doesnt focus from you and back to what your doing constantly. if not it might help to invest in a camera with manual focus. distracting to see the focus jumping around all over the place.

Welder and heater running at the same time should have plenty of heat because wires will be hot too!! Yes I believe so - square d from lowes. If you want the spaces id just go with that and then use your 50 amp as main feeding it.
