I noticed that was a Zoeller Sump Pump. Zoeller recommends drilling a 3/16” weep or vent hole in the pipe between the impeller chamber and the check valve. This hole will allow trapped air to escape from the impeller chamber and prevent the pump from becoming air locked. Read the Zoeller Installation instructions regarding the weep hole.

Great job on the video. Caution: If power does go out, please don't bring a generator down into your basement. It can kill your whole family! Leave the generator outside and have an electrician hook up all your sump circuit breakers (and other critical circuots) to an accessible sub-panel before you need to use it.

How much sump can a sump pump pump, if a sump pump could pump sump? 🎉
@diydoc
@diydoc Жыл бұрын
@@rlopez18m - Yes, but very true for all generators! If a generator runs on gasoline, propane, natural gas, diesel or fuel oil, its an internal combustion engine (like all non-electric cars). ALL INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES - which includes generators - burn the fuel and give off carbon monoxide (CO) in the process. It is deadly, colorless and odorless, and only detectable with a CO monitor. Generators should be placed outside the house or garage and at least 15 feet away from any door or window. Basements and garages are not safe for them!

Two pumps are always better than one especially if your in an area prone to flooding. The only thing I didn't like was putting some of the PVC pipe in the cement. I personally would want access to all of the PVC tubing for easier repairs in the future if necessary. Great video and I hope you never get water down there again.

With the amount of water in the basement as shown in the video, I would have installed twin pumps and double the water storage. The pumps cycle between the two of them extending their lives significantly. It all depends on how fast the pumps cycle in the wet part of your year.

We had problems with electric going out and pump not working. We then installed a base pump that uses a siphoning system that kicks in when power goes out. The float for the base pump is set in higher than the electric pump. Worked great and you won’t have to worry about pump going out. It only works if you have municipal water and not a well.

Are we able to actually put a cap on that tank that has minjmal to no holes? Our cap is from 1983 and is a bent metal piece. This is all new to me. Im from the city and we never had wells or sump pumps in the city housd. I was reading that a cap needs to be on and tight at all times in case Radon coming up from the ground throu that pit. Has anyone ever heard of this Radon exposure thru sump pump pits? That scares me more then the possibility of flooding. Also, great video! Ive been doing most the work around the new home. KZbin has been a tremendous help with all my remodeling projects and learning the differences from a city home v.s a country home. This is one of the best videos i have watched in terms of clarity, detailed visual instructions, and straight to the point. Great job on this video.

I would also suggest that you install a check valve into your floor drain so that water cannot come back up through the drain. Hopefully that will keep you dry for years to come...battery backup or better yet having those pumps on a circuit connected to a generator in the event of a power outage.

Excellent that's more than a suggestion in Brooklyn they have a code I tried to explain to him maybe I didn't do it correctly but if you gasket and seal everything around the clear acrylic cover install the check valve drain what goes in will not come back out like the creepy crawlers and they won't live in breathe down there in the dampness if they love so much nobody seems to know a check valves are anymore it's part of the plumbing code😅😅

Thanks. Great video! It was much simpler than I imagined. I thought you would need to do excavating around the house, or install a trough around the perimeter of the basement. But all you needed were the pumps and some plumbing to remove the water. That seems doable and maybe affordable.

Nice video / im sure this will help people. One suggestion as an add on, our system is the same pump as yours, but has a second backup pump thats hooked up to a battery. Theres a Zoeller control unit hooked in to both which will sound an alarm if the main pump goes out, and will automatically kick over to the backup pump running on battery if the power goes out. We also have a whole house generator, but youre super covered if you just have the battery and second pump. Im a software architect so love the redundancy 🙂

Don't forget to run the sump pump to a dedicated outlet! If you share an outlet and that appliance faults and trips the breaker...that takes out the sump pump too. Plan on doing yardwork to minimize the water? That would be the best scenario, keep the water away from the house in the first place. Or is the water table just high and there's nothing you can do about it? Is that your house in the video at the 42 sec mark? If so, it seems to be up a ways with good fall towards the front. I would think some french drains or at least a swale around the house would help a ton.
@detzlerangela
@detzlerangela Жыл бұрын
I agree with water minimizing. We had a house in the city. The basement never flooded, not even a drop of water. When my son and I replaced the old roof with a new roof we took off the rain gutters and I forgot to put them back on. One Spring day it rained like cats and dogs. This caused some rain water to get into the basement due to no rain gutters. It was not flooded, but it was enough water to fill about 4 of my 5 gallon buckets. Keep the area around the home water free is always the best route. Even keeping the outside water hose a distance away from the foundation is a good idea. This video was very good, clear and easy to understand.

I enjoyed this. My son just bought a house in Wisconsin and Just a week ago water started flowing into his basement. He's got a sump pump but they were in a panic and shop vac'd the water coming in where the wall meets the floor, and emptied it into the drain every 15-30 minutes. A plumber came out and said with all the heavy rain this year the water table is really high and all he could do is wait a week for it to settle. So now I'm looking into French Drains etc. We both lived in the desert (Las Vegas) and didn't even know what a sump pump was until we moved out here. If anyone has any suggestions we would sure appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

I ended up installed a second pit in my basment as well. I have 3 pumps that run every 30 seconds or so. why didn't you guys grab the tile from the outside and bring it in aswell? I eneded up digging down 8ft and drilling hole though footer into new sump pit. 1st time in years my basment is bone dry during this spring thaw. looks good, and good video
@jerrygrayson8421
@jerrygrayson8421 2 жыл бұрын
Chris digging eight foot down is a chore if you did not have machinery and the It! also is expensive. I suspect you dug from interior basement wall into footer but I think you could had installed a perimeter drain to avoid this and the run interior perimeter drain into sump. I am not criticizing you but want to understand since I am thinking of installing sump pump. I now run three dehumidifiers .
@tnt666tnt
@tnt666tnt 2 жыл бұрын
I once was there with the 3 dehumidifiers. Now just one. No more musty smell and it's dry. I dug from the outside by hand, cut the exterior tile added a T- fitting and piped though the footer into the hole I made on the other side of the basement wall inside into my new sump pit. While I was there I jetted all the exterior tile. Ideally a full interior tile drain to the sump pit would be better. bit that would be a huge job.

Very informative. I have two questions. Firstly, I should say that my home is 114 years old (built in 1910), the unfinished basement is poured concrete (not the norm at that time in my area), and when there has been heavy rain and snow melt, the amount of water has been negligible. I'm more concerned about protecting the integrity of the home. Onto my questions: 1. What is a "reasonable" amount to pay for the installation? What's a good quote ($) look like? 2. How far away from the foundation should the water be discharged? I see discharge pipes on neighboring homes that extend less than a foot. It seems counter-productive to just discharge the water out along the foundation. In advance, appreciate the answers.

I was really satisfied with this video until it showed the plumbing and he failed to prime the fittings before glueing them. When that glue fails and that 90 blows apart its gonna be another flood. ALWAYS Prime your glue joints before applying your glue. Its quality steps like that likely explains why the plumbing company was so much more expensive. Not that the primer is expensive, its the experience your paying for. A plumber knows those fittings need primed and glued.

He can't answer. They're "homesteaders", (definitely not just a house in a rural area, with affiliate links) so he was probably waiting for the Wells Fargo wagon to deliver printouts of your YT comments. Anyhow I can answer for him since he's likely dead of tuberculosis or typhoid by now. Your pump rating will designate the vertical lift it can manage. The more HP, the higher it can lift the outflow. Depending on the pump, it may have different ratings for that height depending on the diameter of the pipe used. Try to go for more on the 2". Most of these will handle 10' lifts easily.

Why have the electrical outlets on the floor in a room prone to flooding? I'm surprised the guy didn't mount them on the wall - makes no sense. Should be GFI's too. Just my 2 cents.

Yes, we have added wall outlets which was the plan all along. Just did that later after we filmed.

Cement over the lid hmmm, also plastic way to high interfering with the overall integrity of the structure strength hmmm, concrete slab floor recommended minimum of 3 to 4 inches thick. And whats up with the basin lid holes everywhere, if you love moisture sure no problem. Also forgot to wet the surface perimeter where the concrete was poured. You pay what you get, overall clean job though, just giving my honest opinion as a professional waterproofer

Yep, that’s why it was so worth it to pay them for the install, but it works great.

Curse the developer who knew this but put profit and greed ahead of logic. This is going on in Michigan everywhere. Such a shame. I was happy to get a house on a slab of concrete at ground level. Did your insurance pay for the damages or say “you should have gotten flood insurance?”

In the video the home owner says if the power goes out , he will bring a generator down . Do not do that , you will get Carbon Monoxide poisoning . So you can tell he can’t install himself & gives dangerous advice . Also the mechanic should have put a fiber cloth under the base of the Plastic housing before he installed ,then submerge the pump inside . Also he didn’t show you from beginning to end had too install piping. That concrete should of had stone mixed in with it , also look at the so called concrete on Cover , along with sloppy wiring laying on ground . Good Luck .

Confused why you are only depending on sub-slab drainage rocks and did not direct drainage to sump pump by adding 4x4 PVC perforated drainage pipe discharging into sump? This is not just a question since I am about to add a sump pump. Thank you.

This video is only showing how the sump pump was installed. It doesn’t show other things we have done but we do have drain pipes and lines installed as well. Even with all the drainage pipes, we were still finding that water is saturated under our floor slab. The sump pumps were installed to help with this issue. You definitely need to evaluate your needs. I hope this helps.
