Installing a supercharger on my Volkswagen Bus. VW AMR-500

Installed a AMR 500 supercharger on my Volkswagen bus. The engine is a 1641. I removed my dual carburetor setup and installed the supercharger kit I got from Berry's blowers. berrysblowersl... They have had great customer service.
We got it running! But....
My push rod tubes have been leaking oil(a lot) for awhile so I decided to just pull the engine out and replace those before I drive it. I will make another video of my opinion on the supercharger once I get the engine back in. I know It would have been a lot easier to install the supercharger out of the bus but I didn't decide to pull it until after I installed everything.

I've had a Berry's kit on my 1641 in my Ghia for a few months now. It is an absolute blast to drive.

I figured taking it off was the best move. I'm sure they are fun for short showoff drives but traveling?....forget it over heating shit flying off breaking problems for sure. Every motor I put in our bus I want a bigger one. Then I ask "do I really want to go that fast in a bus?" 72 MPH in a split is fast enough. also they make a fire extinguishing tube about 6' long that goes above the motor in the engine compartment. GET ONE. That's a very nice bus. Thanks for posting.

The intake design could be possibly improved by making the manifold vertical tube longer/taller & having the 2 bolt flange located higher up where 90 degree elbow makes the down turn.

Update: I put the dual carburetors back on. I was having problems with the side draft crab leaking from the Venturi. I tried 3 different carburetors and all 3 leaked. The kit I bought came with a carburetor it was a aftermarket Weber. The company I ordered the kit from had great customer service. I returned the carburetor and they sent me another one to try but they just kept leaking in the same spot. After the third one I was frustrated and just decided to put the dual carburetors back on and returned the supercharger kit.

It is unfortunate , You didn’t actually need to remove the charger to set the RivNut. You don’t need the tool, you can simply use a bolt that fits the Rivnut , some flat washers and a small spacer. Tightening the bolt compresses the RivNut, be carful to not over tighten the bolt, it can be stripped out.

How long does the belt last? I've never seen a V-belt type used with a tensioner in that manner before.

Curious to see the durability? Lee Berry offer innovative kits at a great price, but is kinda vague on if he is using Chinese, or Japanese blowers? All the research I have done says the Chinese copies will delaminate, but the genuine Aisins will not?

Im not sure. The durability will have to be to be determined. I will drive it more this summer and do an update on my channel. I do know he tests all his blowers before he ships them out.

What will be interesting to see is how the carbie tuning goes. The rich/ lean issues they have can be a problem using a blower ive been told. Let us know 🤙🏽

Berrys blowers. It’s designed for the bus. I believe so the carb doesn’t touch the floor above it. You could connect with Berry’s blowers i’m sure they could give you the reason why it’s designed that way.

How many lbs of boost is it making?

I haven’t had a chance to drive it much yet. I only drove it around the block so far. It was around 5-6lbs. I’m working on a few other things on the bus and I’m waiting on parts so I can drive it. It should be back on the road next week. I’ll let you know what lbs it makes once I drive it more.
