Boston Whaler Montauk Project: Installing a Transom Saver
Although Boston Whalers tend to have very strong transoms, installing a transom saver on a boat is generally considered a good idea for several reasons:
The transom is the structural component at the back of the boat where the outboard motor is attached. A transom saver helps support the weight of the motor during transport, preventing excessive stress and potential damage to the transom.
When trailering a boat, the outboard motor can bounce and jostle due to road vibrations and bumps. This constant movement can strain the transom, leading to cracks or other damage over time. A transom saver absorbs much of this shock, reducing the strain on the transom and prolonging its lifespan. A transom saver typically keeps the outboard motor in a stable, upright position during transport. This helps maintain proper alignment of the motor, preventing unnecessary stress on the mounting hardware and ensuring that it is ready for use when you arrive at your destination.
Without proper support, the outboard motor's lower unit (including the propeller and gearbox) can make contact with the road or trailer during transit, leading to damage or misalignment. A transom saver keeps the motor raised and secure, minimizing the risk of damage. By securing the outboard motor properly during transport, a transom saver reduces the risk of accidents or injuries caused by the motor shifting or falling off the boat while in transit. It is a bumpy ride to the marina, so I think this will be a great help.
Overall, installing a transom saver is a relatively inexpensive investment that can help protect your boat's transom and outboard motor, prolong their lifespan, and ensure safer and smoother travels when towing your boat. It is a fairly easy job. The unit I purchased was a universal model, but it did have some great reviews. As far as installation, some customization/ modifications will be needed as you can see, but overall, it is fairly straightforward and easily doable for the average do it yourself-er.
Thanks for watching. Hope this has helped, I will be adding more videos soon, feel free to ask any questions-wishing you the best! 1💙
