From my own experience when a drain plug o-ring failed, the objective here is to run the boat wide open throttle so as to allow drag and vacuum to suck the water out, get close to shore and allow the vessel come to a rest on the sand of the beach as far below water line as available to execute a repair if possible and keep the unit from sinking. I had to do that adjacent a beach on Long Island, NY back in the 80’s. A life guard on duty called a Suffolk County marine bureau vessel for assistance to secure the beach area where I was disabled pending the repair. I was surprised they were as helpful as they were but they were very helpful. They actually had a spare plug and towed me off the sand when I was ready to move again. Kudos to the officers and the Life guard. Been very grateful ever since.

Happened to me and my dad once out on Lake Michigan. Got one mile out and my dad goes “did you put the plug in before I launched the boat?” Without answering I turned the boat around and accelerated as fast as it would go which only felt like 1/4 power.. then I pitched the motor up to get the bow as high as I could.. By the time we reached the dock we had about an inch of clearance on each side. Not a single word was spoken the entire ride in.

For those wondering how they ever let it get to that spot, there's a lot of water that gets into the hole before you would ever really notice it and then once it gets to a certain point the water comes in really really fast, these boys better be glad they had an outboard motor on it instead of an inboard because if it were an inboard it would have been choked out and there wouldn't have been going anywhere but since it had an outboard he was able to take off and all that water would start going back out the drain hole so all he has to do is drive until it's empty and then jump in real quick put the drain plug in it and let the bilge pump out the little bit of water that came back in before he was able to get the drain plug back in it

Been there with a sheriff's deputy while hunting on his boat, had to literally jump out and pull them to shore because they didn't notice with the waders on
