There is absolutely a standard for Cat 5/6 patch leads….the pairs are split so the twists match the TX and RX pairs used by the Ethernet wiring in the network, whether wired to 568A or B, but not straight through 1-8 in order as you might think. Oh, and re the shielding, you can get shielded twisted pair (STP) as well as the unshielded (UTP) you were using, just FYI. 👍
