I bought a Thor oven for my condo remodel and got the paperwork to be sure of the measurements before install. The actual oven was 1/8” larger than what The paperwork from Thor claimed. I had to call the synthetic countertop guys back to grind the countertops so the oven would fit. After using the Thor for less than a year one of the burners stoped working. I called Thor, no reply. I shopped their web site for parts, the burner parts that failed on my oven were sold out. Multiple phone calls to Thor, no help. Waited months for the part to become available, never did. Then the oven failed. I had had it. Junked the oven less than two years after install. Never a word from Thor. As you can imagine I am NOT A FAN OF THOR…appliances!

In my former house I had bought a new, expensive Thor gas range. A burner control rheostat under the knob did not last long at all. Was not impressed with Thor's engineering nor the response I received. They are off my 'approved vendors list'.

im building a house right now one of the first thing my contractor had me do was pick my appliance first, they with the second draft the kitchen and what not where planned around the spec and size appliances of the it self. So there no interferences and everything will look like it belongs. A high under rated part of the build.

Ours has been set up like that since we got it, and we've been in the same house since '94 or '95 (so long ago that I forget exactly what year, I was only like 4 or 5 years old at the time). And all that time, we've had the same fridge. No ice maker, and it's a "freezer over fridge" type setup with one regular door for each, rather than the "side-by-side" arrangement that seems much more common today. Maybe it's more a matter of where I live in the US, I'm not sure. Either way, that fridge has lasted a good long time. I expect the air circulation fan will be the first thing to fail on it, and it might be starting to get towards time to replace it, because the fan is infact making a funny noise sometimes now (but performance is the same as ever), so maybe the bearings are starting to go. I'm fairly certain that it has near to zero transistors in it, and if it has any at all I should be able to count them on one hand. The reason I say this is that it has never failed despite not being connected to a surge protector, and having survived countless power outages over the years, things that would have long since cooked any electronics-based control system in it. Electronic control boards in appliances are well-known to fail much more often than electromechanical control systems for the same kind of appliance, especially if they deal with water in any way or get cold enough to condense water, both marks that a fridge with an ice maker have against it. That's why I don't like the idea of smart appliances, sure they're "more useful" for a while, but then they will almost certainly break, or if they don't break then the "smart" features of it will eventually become obsolete just like any tech product, and I'm not looking forward to the idea of having to replace my fridge every 2-5 years "just to keep up with the times". That gets entirely too expensive, entirely too quickly. I'd much rather just mount a regular old easily available tablet to the side of the fridge, and be able to replace JUST the tablet as I need to, rather than having the entire fridge go obsolete. In my mind most appliances have exactly one job. The fridge keeps things various degrees of cold, the dishwasher cleans things, the range and oven (or a combination appliance) and the microwave cook and/or heat things, that kind of thing. The dumber they are (to a point), the better. Despite the fact that the microwave oven almost certainly has an electronic control board, and the fact that microwaves are available with electromechanical controllers (egg timer style control), I do prefer them with electronic controls. Not too fancy tho, I don't like the microwaves that use inverter technology to drive the magnetron instead of a more traditional step-up transformer, high voltage diode, and oil capacitor based power supply. Despite the fact that the inverter type is more efficient and has a better power factor (things that are good for my power bill and that the utility company likes, respectively), the fact is that the inverter-type power supply relies on highly stressed electronic components to power the tube, as they almost certainly didn't size them appropriately to be able to do the job for 10 years or more. Whereas with the simpler power supply type, it's just not economical to make the components any more inexpensive, and yet they're still capable of lasting nearly forever, and replacements are relatively easy to come by. And if the microwave dies for another reason, you can gut those power supply components and use them to make a jakob's ladder (aka the climbing arc thing you see in the lab in Frankenstein type movies). Anyways, like another commenter said, it doesn't take much of an angle off level to make the doors close on their own. Likely less than 0.25 degrees off level in the right direction should do it. And if you angle it so it's "back, and then away from whatever side the hinge is on" if it is the style with all the hinges on one side, then you can open the door up to 135 degrees and it will still have a bias towards automatically closing.

Feeling validated at 5:28 after ordering a refrigerator that nominally fit my existing opening, only to find that with tilt for door closure it was 1/2" taller than my opening, and needing to remove that difference from the bottom of the cabinet after the installers tried to "make" it fit.

I was at the getting spot trying to buy a chest freezer and a couple were there looking at dishwashers and I heard them talking to someone in a Indian call center trying to get a price to install the dishwasher in their old farm house. They were trying to get quotes from Home advisor to install a dishwasher but because there was no rough in for a dishwasher home advisor told them $1800-3800 as an estimate to rough in and install their new dishwasher. Being a HVACR contractor and a nice guy I ended up installing it for them and saved them a bout $2000. Home advisor wanted to send out an estimator and then 2 different contractors to install a freaking dishwasher. This winter I had a no heat call from them and the problem was one of them turned their thermostat off. Who would have known in 2022 that a 608 license is all you need to make $100k plus a year and any human who can turn a wrench can make $1000 a day hanging out at home depot talking to lesbian couples trying to rehab old farmhouses.

Don't get side by side refrigerators. Getting stuff in and out is a pain. We bought a french door with bottom freezer just like this one. (different brand) The access to food is much better.

does not code require an air gap in that area? im not a specialist in all areas, but in all the places i have been the code states there MUST be an airgap installed for the dishwasher and that the coil is NOT allowed.

Right, I don't think just "raising the hose" is enough. You need the anti-siphon vent.

You don't need an air gap!! Biggest waste of time and nothing but problems in the future and a complete nuisance to keep clean. If required in your area, install the air gap , then after final inspection remove and install a soap dispenser. Install the discharge hose with a loop up to the top of the inside of the cabinet and half-strap it to the back of cabinet. I have done this for 35 years and never had a siphon issue.

I can tell for sure there are regions where this would violate a code. In other regions it is fine as it is not directly accessible and it is not like the outlet is next to a faucet. But I immediately thought about, huh, what if anything starts dripping now... But living in Germany, our dishwashers get hooked up quite different as well, which I never realized. Usually the dishwasher comes with a hose, new ones mostly having an electric leak stop valve on the side connected to the plumbing which shuts off water if the pipe bursts or some other leak is detected. That hose is fixed to the back of the dishwasher and connected to the cold water line. We usually have a shut of valve for hot water and a shut of valve for cold water with a regular valved tap for the dishwasher. For electricity they have a regular cable and our common "Schuko" plug (in other European countries it is whatever plug they use). No piping and wires going to the front of the dishwasher. The drain line looks pretty much the same, only in our case there is a connector above the p-trap (which we call Siphon here). You usually will not find garbage disposal in kitchen sinks as you are not supposed to put anything not liquid to beginn with down the drain. Not sure if they would even be allowed. I am sure they are not in the region I live in, but that may vary from place to place. At least they are hard to get, although you can buy them online. But I don´t know any house having one. Most people fear the garbage may cause clogging in the pipes and sewer lines and cause unnecessary strain on the waste water treatment plants. Nice thing about mine (Bosch brand) for leveling was, that the feet in front could easily be reached with a wrench. The leveling foot in the back could be operated through a screw in the front, so you could easily level it even after it was in place. Not sure if that is common this days or just typical to Bosch and identical devices (Siemens or Neff brands). I only know because I had to replace mine about two years ago.

The only thing that I saw the installer do wrong is peeling the plastic protective film off. In my experience that should be left on until it finally drops off naturally in about 20 years. 😬✌🏻🇺🇸

That dishwasher looks pretty but I got to ask, is that kind of type common in the US? Around here most dishwashers are built-in and using the regular kitchen door panels instead and it's hard to get a pretty stainless steel version. Due to how a dishwasher door opens I think a regular door panel is often a terrible idea though... I've seen it being an issue really often

That screw is not getting any amount of water. It's not inside the dishwasher, there is a rubber cap that goes on top of the hole, and the hole is outside of the main door gasket. Regular screws are fine.

Well I have to admit I had to think about leveling mine. Unusual for Germany at the time I got a side by side refrigerator (commonly also called American refrigerator over here), meaning other than the whole thing is way wider than a regular fridge here (same 60 cm standard width as about everything else) and has not just a door on the bottom and one on top, but, as the name implies side by side. ours has no freezer drawers like the one in the video, but fridge on the right and freezer on the left. However, ours (LG brand) had to be leveled with two feet in the front, just to make the doors even. If its not level, one door will be higher than the other as the whole thing shifts slightly.

@@justjack9561 You'll hear the water in the disposal just as much as in the air gap. Since it's already installed, better to keep the air gap as it's a better safety measure for sewage backflow than a dishwasher check valve.

The high loop means that the water would have to pretty much fill the sink until it made it up the "hill" of the high loop and back into the dishwasher. So unless the sink backs up and then you keep filling, it won't happen. I always secure my high loops. I don't believe they won't fall.

Lovely appliances and I wish I had them but … I’d encourage anyone building a kitchen to get the fridge and stove they need, not the ones they convince themselves they need. I bought a used gas range (1960s Wedgewood) and some fridge for probably $300 total and they’ve worked fine for twenty years. We also found a tile store with old stock on discount, and spent less than $100 on that. Yes, we have to make our own ice, but we have managed somehow. (I imagine it makes sense to buy a new dishwasher because of seals and things like that.) None of this is to say that when Scott was building this beautiful home he should not have put in beautiful appliances, especially when they were donated by a good company!

I learned a few things when I replaced my old kitchen appliances: 1. Some of the people who install them are idiots. The clowns who put my over-the-stove microwave oven in did such a bad job that I made them take it down again. It was going to fall off the wall anyway. I installed the new one myself at 1 in the morning after drinking wine with dinner. Not a problem if you're willing to THINK. 2. Appliances are often not supported by the manufacturers starting a few years after the model is introduced. The repairman shows up, tells you what part you need, informs you that they are no longer stocked, takes your $149, and drives away. But if you have the model number and a 1/4" nut driver, you can look up the problem on youtube, figure out which part to buy, get it for cheap with google, and replace it yourself. Surprise: they all use the same parts, which are available for 3 to 10 times lower prices than offered by the manufacturer - if they're still stocked. 3. Your new appliance will not fit properly in the space occupied by the old one. The installers cannot make the modifications to your gas line, electrical box, or water line, so it will be sticking out and looking silly unless you get the drawings and make the required modifications before the installers show up.

The dishwasher install would not have met the code in my area. There was no air gap installed. Even if the unit has a built-in check valve, air gaps are required. Running the hose high like he did is the next best option (still not allowed here). This should have been listed as an advertisement of info-mercial, just saying.

Air gaps are required by code in my state. Almost nobody installs them (I basically forced my contractors to install one when I remodeled my kitchen). IMHO, it's an easy installation for good piece of mind, but I guess "Not having ugly stuff on my counter" > "Not having sewage in my dishwasher" for most people.

We put air gaps in to pass inspection, then almost always remove them to put in an air switch for the disposal. Every 20th job we leave the air gap in. Always plumbed into a high loop after, of course. The inspectors all know we do it, just part of the dance.

American kitchens look so clunky with the refrigerators and other appliances that don't match the cabinet styles/are build-ins. In most European kitchens a dishwasher is hidden behind a front similar to the other cabinets, as is the refrigerator. I wonder why the preferences for kitchen styles are so different between US and Europe

@@dtemp132 And then it turns out to last just half the period. Because you paid for looks and brand name, not for actually better stuff. Besides: I hear too many people talk about replacing stuff because they are sick of them, or want a new look, or have a better energy label or whatever excuse to spend money to impress friends and family, to believe in appliances being used untill broken. I bet you a 70% chance that after the spec house is sold, the entire kitchen will be build out, sold for second hand and replaced to the home owners likings.

@@bertbergers9171 There are several brands that come with quality for that cost. Speed Queen laundry machines come to mind. Versus my brother bought mid-range LG machines and bought them twice over in repairs over the past 8 years. My advice is find a good appliance company that provides extended service plans. You'll find they quickly stop selling crap that breaks down often and costs them multiple service calls.

How come? You open it to fill it with soap, when closing, turn it on and close it. It uses a small light on the floor to indicate when it's done.

Mine is like this and it's totally fine. Seamless look. Dial in your settings and shut the door. A red light is shone on the floor when it's running

I like the hidden buttons in my home because I have small children and so since they can’t see the buttons, they have not been touching them like they did with the old dishwasher.

My new Bosch dishwasher has the buttons in that arrangement. It's fine - you push the buttons as required with the door open a crack, and then shut it to run. It's a nice, clean look. The only problem: the thing is so quiet that you can't tell it's running unless you press your ear against it. For that reason, it projects a spot of red light on the floor when it's running.

Maybe the one I played with was broken? It would not let any button be pushed while the door was open. Possibly a older model hell idk. But since I've avoided them. I'd prefer a good old fashioned knob and real buttons myself. This silly new junk won't last long.
