In this video, the Bearded Carpenter adds braces to the posts and cuts tie beam scarfs, complete with the intricate detail of a lamb's tongue. He also showcases his dad's classic Portercable Speedmatic saw with a 10" blade in action. If you're familiar with this vintage saw, we'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

Hi Paul. When I watch you do a piece of wood art like that, it's crystal clear what an expert craftsman you are. At the same time it's obvious to me, how long way I still have to go, before I can even think of doing something like that. One thing we have in common on this project are, no drawings. I never make drawings, it's all ideas in my head. As always it's a treat and a pleasure to see you do your thing. I just love to sit back, watch, listen and learn. Thanks for yet another great time at school. All the best my friend - Michael.

Howdy Michael- I sure appreciate you watching our videos and for your support. I don’t always have a clear plan in my head and things kind of evolve as l go along. I usually have a clear understanding of what I’m doing but may not have everything completely figured out and fall back on previous experience to make it happen. I learn something every single day so I guess I’m not too old of a codger lol. I sure wish you and l could spend some time together. If you ever get to come over the big pond I’ll make sure you don’t go hungry lol. The Lady can really cook. Hope all is well. God bless

You sound like myself. Most of the work I do when building furniture is spontaneous straight out of what I see in my mind. As an engineer it seems to just flow right out of my brain and in to a piece of work. Awesome work as usual. Keep it up and thanks for sharing. God Bless you and yours. 🙏🙏🙏

I enjoy watching you make art. When I have a job to do, I always keep score by how much I got done in a day. Doing that means “as much as I like fancy for nice, there’s no time for doing those extra steps”. I wish I could adapt to your laid back style. Happiness is supposed to be a way of traveling, not a destination. I’m glad you are able to do it the right way. Keep up the good work. 🥸👍👀👋✅

Greetings from Torrance, So-Cal.. 7 or so years ago, my wife's grampa from Ironton, Ohio passed. He left me all of his tools. There were quite a few different size spoke shaves and many planes, along with an assortment of other tools. His wife, (my wife's grandma), had a grampa that was a German immigrant/carpenter and ''dory-man at San -Pedro, Ca.. That man built up a lot of the original houses/homes in the L.A.''the South Bay'' area. I thought you'd enjoy that story. Oh, and he tuned pianos on the side.

As far as i can tell, the speedomatic line of saws was produced between 1931-1936. The catalog shows a listening price of $115 for the 8" model, which is a $2,000 saw in today's world. Thanks for all you do Paul.

Porter-Cable kept many of their best designs in production for a very long time. Even after their acquisition by Rockwell in 1960, older circular saws stayed in production even as new models were developed.

Hello Paul. I did find one of these Speedmatic - 10 saws for sale on eBay, $225.00. I did not look to see if it is still for sale. The cuts that you make and how you do it is really interesting to me. If you were to have a live show when you put the bridge together, I would watch it in entirety. You put a lot more work into your builds than we are shown. Have good days!

Hi, I have been collecting vintage power tools for several years with a special interest in Porter-Cable. In my experience, Ebay is the worst possible place to shop as the prices are two, three or four times as high those seen on Craigslist etc.

I have a Rockwell circular saw of the same vintage, they are tanks, they last forever. At about 2:17 you can see a little grease cup, you probably know this but I'll explain for others, that cup greases the bearings, every once in a while you give it a little turn and it pushes grease into the bearing. Unless you've changed it, the grease in the cup is probably old and dried out, if you are going to use it, you should clean out that old grease and put some good grease in it. Vintage Porter-Cable power tools are very collectable, it could be worth a couple hundred bucks, not that you'd ever sell it.

Howdy Bigred- they are tough old saws for sure. Yes, I’m aware of the grease cup. I have an old table saw that has them on the motor. A lot of my tools are somewhat vintage now but they still perform really well. I don’t think I could ever part with this old saw. My Dad bought it from a fellow who was working for him back in the late fifties. I think he paid him $50 for it. It still has the case it came in. I don’t use it much anymore but I’m hanging on to it. Thank you so much for watching the video and sharing this with us. Take care and God’s blessings to you

@@TheBeardedCarpenter They were very expensive, my 8 1/4" Rockwell was about fifty dollars when it was new in the 50s, adjusted for inflation that's $650, so your fathers 10" saw would have been even more expensive.

@@bigredc222 Just for the record, Rockwell bought Porter-Cable in 1960. It took around a decade for them to close down production in Syracuse, New York and relocate to Jackson, Tennessee. The brand name 'Rockwell' replaced Porter-Cable on the tools around 1970.
