I have gone through several videos looking for good practice to show my apprentices while on lockdown in the U.K. and this is the closest to the demonstration I would give them if we were in class. Fixing the mistake is also a good lesson, we all have had to do that one at some time :-) . Thanks for this.

I had a Mahogany door made in Honduras. Sidelights top sunburst. Could not afford installation. I messed up the hinges, lockset etc. That's when I got into woodworking. Woulda, shoulda, coulda. KZbin was new then. So thank you for sharing. Think I'm gonna fix that Fn door now.

Very nice tutorial. I do my hinges the same way. A palm router then chisel. For the screw holes I switched over to using a set of self centering drill bits from Rockler. I drill one, put the screw in then drill the others. That way I know it's not going to move between holes.

I layout the hinges, chisel the lines drill the majority of the waste then clean up with a chisel. This works for me in almost any wood that I build a door from.

Your commentary is what makes this video great, otherwise it's just another guy installing a hinge. BTW, no VIX bit when finding the hinge hole center?

WOW, I'm doing a bench seat top almost just like that and have decided not to add hinges, (because I can't figure out how it will work and also look good).

Any guidance or rules of thumb you use to determine which technique you’d use. Are there certain situations where you’d recommend using the hand tool method or is it pure preference?
@David-ql1hd3 жыл бұрын
This is great! Do you have any marking knives and gauges you recommend?

Well scripted and photographed. Thank you. Are those bark inclusions typical of pecan? Are steel threads for tapping wood for brass screws typical of the way Horton Brass does business? That sort of thoughtfulness helps justify their prices.

I'm curious why you scribed the depth line when using the router. I would just set the depth of cut using the hinge, then l would just route near to the body of the hinge and then chisel out the remaining waste. Then there is no need to scribe the depth line. .

Bloody hell. By the time you've pfaffed about looking for the router, bits, jig I' d have the job done within a fraction of the time. Not bragging, most people could if they learnt how to use a chisel.
