Protect your chickens from overhead predators by installing Netting. This video shows you how we covered our entire 900 sq ft chicken run after 3 of our chickens were killed by hawks.
You can buy this NETTING here- amzn.to/2ML90XN

Back in the ‘80s I was training with Peruvian Marines, we had just flown into a little town called Esperanza. We were patrolling out of town when I walked by a Farmer dipping his Chickens, Hand to God I ain’t lying, dipping his chickens in Purple Ink. Now I grew up on a farm after I was 11 and we raised Chickens so I asked him “Why he was doing that” by now the Peruvian Marines were really enjoining seeing me so intrigued with Purple Chickens. The Old Farmer looked at me like “Stupid Americans don’t know anything” well he said Hawks and Eagles won’t attack his purple chickens. Of course I said “You’re just trying to fool me” guy looks at me as serious as he could and asked me if I’d ever seen a Hawk eat a Purple Chicken? I said I’d never seen a Purple Chicken, so I don’t know, he said the Hawks have never seen a Purple Chicken either.

THANK YOU!!! We just lost our first hen to a red shouldered hawk, and now the jerks are hanging around and won't leave. I ordered some good quality polypropylene netting, should be coming today, but had no idea how to go about putting it up. We were thinking T-posts and PVC pipe, but like your ideas so much better! It's far more economical. We have an odd shaped run with trees also, so this is extremely helpful. I can't thank you enough!

Any issues with the leafs and sticks from surrounding trees falling on the netting and being difficult to remove or making the netting sag? Putting some up this week in my 40x40 run but there is a big dogwood tree in the middle and I’m nervous about what will happen once fall comes.

What happens when a bird flys into that net? Does it ruin the net and do you have to untangle the bite from the net?
@skywaterstudios
@skywaterstudios 3 жыл бұрын
Never had a bird get stuck in the net. The small birds somehow know its there and fly right thru it. The large birds, well, thats who I want to keep out. they also are aware its there and don't fly into it. I've had the netting up for three years now with no problems ...... except fluffy snow can build up on the net, which is crazy and tree limbs falling down on it.

How did you set up the net around the trees?
@skywaterhaven
@skywaterhaven 5 жыл бұрын
I had to cut the netting all the way back to the closest edge of the net, then tie knots to sew it back together all the way back to the tree. Sorry I didn't show that in my video.
@skywaterhaven
@skywaterhaven 5 жыл бұрын
I had to cut a straight line from the nearest edge of the netting to the tree. I had a tree fall down and rip my netting so now I have a lot of knot tying to do.

SkyWater Haven how does it fair with your electric fence? We have premier1 chicken electric mesh & I was worried anything touching the fence will short it..... Thanks in advance!
@skywaterhaven
@skywaterhaven 4 жыл бұрын
@@shellit930 Hi Shelli, The fence won't short out. What will happen is the electrical current will just get diverted to to the ground. a part of my fence has become buried in the mud, so the fence is no longer energized until I did it out. once freed up, it will work again. Its pretty durable. I've had trees fall on it and it still is holding up good.

SkyWater Haven thanks for the swift reply! I’m a little ocd with our mesh fence not shorting / having too much grass touch it.... we abut a state park so lots of predators coming in from the woods. I will give this a go! Thanks again for sharing!

Thanks for posting this. When you say the current gets diverted to the ground. Does that mean that top wire isn't live but the wires below are..I am new to his electric poultry wire and just dont get how everything works yet. I would also like to attach my net to the top wire. I was thinking I could use small plastic cable ties maybe. Thanks

As for the anti bird netting question. You’ll just need to hang the netting upside down.

You said you don't like using zip ties because they weather and break (zip ties are made of nylon) . You are ok with nylon rope? They make weather tolerant zip ties they will be in the outdoor electric supply section at Home Depot, or Lowes. They are usually black in color. Take Care
