New updates on the Free Abandoned Airplane this week! We just got the brand new engine control cables back from Mcfarlane Aviation and will be getting them installed. It will take a lot of checking the manual, measuring, and double checking to make sure we run all the cables in the right orientation, but once they’re installed we’re one step closer to getting this plane started up again for the first time since we rescued it.

Buddy. I've gone through separation, divorce, remarriage being disowned by my children, losing my job, crippled with arthritis and a few weeks ago, lost my much loved elderly mum. Please know that however much you may feel alone or lost, don't give up, know there are fellas like me burning a candle for you. Even although I'm probably across the pond, just know it's the same moon we see and know you are not alone. All the best buddy, all the best.

Hi gents - just a quick housekeeping comment: when working on long assemblies such as control cables, tubes and wiring bundles that necessitate using the hangar floor to lay them out, always a good idea to lay down some paper or cardboard under them. This reduces the possiblity of picking up contaminants such as metal filings, dust, oils, solvents etc that are potentially harmful to such hardware. A couple of segments in the video did show the cables laying among some contaminants.

When removing control cables or fuel lines/hydraulic lines attach strong cordage or scrap cable and pull it through on the way out. Leaving the trace item in place and it can be used to back pull new cables etc.

Be sure to digitise those manuals! Never know if they will get damaged or lost through this venture. Would also help anyone else in a similar situation who cannot find any physical manuals, to at least have access to a digital version. Also, yay to 401 content! Glad to see you back on the 401. MacFarlane is a great company to work with. I remembering replacing all the control cables in Sam's Grumman Cougar when it was at the Aero Club at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. MacFarlane helped us a lot getting those cables made. My advice is do not get in a big hurry to install them. Drawing a road map showing how the cables need to be routed first helps tremendously. The Cessna manuals really sucks when it comes to routing cables. Their cartoon illustrations are not very clear when it comes to routing cables. Once you get them installed correctly and rigged, the job goes pretty quickly. Keep up the great work. Thanks for sharing.

Best episode yet! It's good to have goals but to do it right it takes as long as it takes. One commentor thought this rebuild rescue might take three more years. If that is how long it takes to do it right, then so be it. Good luck getting all the parts installed correctly. Would be awesome if a few A&Ps had the will and opportunity to help with the Phoenix.

Another great episode, and another grey hair.🤣 I found out this past week how much I talk about Rebuild Rescue with my wife every week. We saw a story on the news about an Airbus A-320 that Russia just abandoned rescue attempts on. A few years back a Russian airline pilot made an emergency landing in Siberia due to running out of fuel. My wife said, “Maybe they would let me have it, IF I can get it started”. Thanks for all you do Jason. See you next week.

Not to be a downer, but I spent 3 years building a very simple light sport aircraft. Even after I was done, I spent TWO MORE YEARS getting everything right. I can't imagine the hundreds of issues that will rear their ugly heads -- after this is done. Putting it back together will only be half the job. I have fun watching these videos because I can relate. I just think you are still years away from having a flying aircraft. I wish it weren't so but that is the reality of aircraft building, and greatly exaggerated by such a complex aircraft as the 401.

@@Olli2Wollidid you forget that the issue with his flight was that he didn't check his fuel and there was water in the fuel? Because that's what the NTSB preliminary report said. The issue wasn't how they did the work, but how he did or didn't do his preflight. You can mourn the loss of someone while also acknowledging the errors that lead to the loss.

My uncle worked for the Budd Company in Philadelphia. He was an assembly supervisor for their iconic RDC cars (Rail Deisel Cars). Later in life, he volunteered with heritage rail groups that preserved and restored RDC units. One group decided to rebuild a car and wanted to gut it completely and rebuild it piece by piece. When he asked them how they intended to do that rebuild, they were confident they could do it using the parts and repair manuals. He pointed out to them that assembly vs repair were not the same (and therefore, they could certainly not use parts/repair material to rebuild a car). This is what is happening here. The manufacturer never intended a unit to be completely rebuilt, so the holistic view was never published.
@davidelliott5843
@davidelliott5843 Ай бұрын
Car body repairs on rust damage are a good example. Obviously, rust has to be removed but there is no manual telling you where to cut for the best repair. It’s usually more involved than the isolated patches we often see on YT.

Nine months??? Dang, I tore my right bicep 90%, ~10 years ago, and I wasn't out anywhere near that long. Working as a large metro fire dept. mechanic we weren't allowed to return to work until 100%. I think I went in at a desk job in two weeks and returned 100% at three months. Also... did you know you can place parts in jars/plastic 'zip-loc' bags with whatever cleaner you like then place them in the ultrasonic cleaner? That way you can fill the tub with plain water and use different cleaners for different parts without having to drain/change the whole tub. It also allows keeping a few skanky parts from ruining an entire tub of cleaner.

Not mocking you just how much changed and how much you didn't know when your started. Just seeing how every bolt needs a wire reminds me that good enough or close is not an option when working on a plane. Has to be perfect and then will still be a scary 1st to 10th flight. Almost like you didn't rebuild a plane you built a plane. all those wires and cables makes me nuts

Manuals - wow that is great news. I have had the same thing with coming across an original good copy of something in "a book" so to my knowledge if you want to digitize that is a clear manner they cut the binding off - thus destroying "the book" - and then the pages can go through a quality scanner. The cutting the book is a hard decision as that book has just the history and such value in it current "look and feel". But in reality - it just a book that has a function and digitizing is boosting that purpose actually. It is just that perceived value is tactile often.

The FARs actually require A&Ps to use the current manuals. Those old Cessna manuals screw together so that change pages can be inserted. Paper manuals are still available thru Textron, but they are pricey: The 17 paper manuals for the 401 are almost $1700! "43.13 (a) Each person performing maintenance, alteration, or preventive maintenance on an aircraft, engine, propeller, or appliance shall use the methods, techniques, and practices prescribed in the current manufacturer's maintenance manual or Instructions for Continued Airworthiness prepared by its manufacturer, or other methods, techniques, and practices acceptable to the Administrator....."

Great to see you back working on the 401again. You picked a tough project for your first one in a while. Those cables can be tough just doing it on a one-for-one exchange, but starting from scratch is "interesting". Sorry about the tendon. I ruptured my achilles tendon a few years ago and it was no fun, especially the recovery. Good luck!

I have been watching for a long time and really enjoy your work. Can't wait to see the 401 finished. One thing that would help is to drop the music volume a db or two. It drives my wife nuts!

You do not use water to something off. You use a tack rag to clean it off when you take it out of a parts cleaner or get done cleaning it rag.
