Granite kitchen counters. Granite kitchen counter install with before and after footage. This video is highly entertaining as it shows what a typical install looks like with both the granite countertops and Kohler's Deerfield undermount sink. You will see some close up video as well in this fast moving quality production.

I love the way they siliconed all the units before checking their unit levels and trying the pieces dry, and the way they over- hung that weak hob off cut cut out with no concern for its support, get a sink saver or a level and clamps if your cheap lol at least they got the epoxy colour right. Drilling through a sponge is a neat trick though 👍

@@JS-zb1vv Total amateur here, but my understanding is that the price depends on how difficult it is to extract from the quarry, rarity of the color, but most of all, how far the material is transported. I am planning around blue pearl for the countertops and a lighter color gneiss with a flowing foliation and pencil-point size red garnets in the matrix as the backsplash. As I understand it, the blue pearl is from Norway and the jasmine white is from India. The blue pearl is an upper-mid-price stone, and the jasmine white was on the special low-end price display.
@JS-zb1vv
@JS-zb1vv 2 жыл бұрын
@@5610winston yes transporting the stone is most of the cost!! Blue pearl has been hard to find !! It’s a very beautiful stone one of my favorites !!pre Covid a container of stone shipped was about 4000.00 for the shipping cost now it’s between 22000.00and 28000.00 it’s insane!! I don’t know where you are located but find a stone shop. Don’t buy from a big box shop lowes home depot etc ! Take pictures of stone you like because different places call the same stone different names!

Great question! That seems to be Hot topic. There are some comments on that issue in the comment section. It has to do some with the thickness of your counter as well but for peace of mind maybe we should’ve put down plywood. The company that installed our counters feels like we don’t have to have them. Maybe we should’ve installed them for peace of mind I’m not sure, but so far so good as it’s been about five years. I need to do this. Mines almost the EXACT same scenario. The only difference is - I don't want under the counter-top sink mount And the kitchen is like a horse shoe , sink in the same place - the peninsula, same place , my stove and fridge are on the opposite side as sink so the horse shoe starts on the walk around part of the peninsula and ends where your stove is, my two small counters are on either side of the stove, one being against the wall to the stove and the other from the stove to the fridge which the end of the walk around part of the peninsula is directly in front of. 50 sq feet of counter space almost exactly. The two smaller counter tops could be cut from the center of the slab . I wanted to find a piece that could be one piece for the horse shoe and then just slide the two tops in on that far wall by the stove / fridge. I noticed there was no wood on top of the cabinets, it just sits there? no cover ply wood or anything to hold it all down? is there danger in that slab breaking this way? what was the total cost of this being done this way? just to this point with no black splash or anything like that. how many sq feet is your set up here? I want to find everything we need at what stone shop we pick and then re do all my cabinets and get everything prepped so it can all go in like this. then all I have left is the black splash which is probably going to be tile.

I recommend that you read through the comments if you haven’t yet as some do post their opinions there concerning supporting the granite. For peace of mind, in hindsight, I would have liked to have added more support. Our grandkids (a 4yr old and a 6yr old) occasionally climb on the counters and so far all is well. Hi I have a question. I am building a cabin in Spain. The kitchen units are from Ikea and are now in place and I am about to order the Granite counter tops. My builder tells me that the way Granite is installed is on top of Plywood, because a typical counter top is 4cm thick and to buy Granite that thick would be too expensive and weight too much for the units and would make the units collapse. He says what they do is cut the granite to 2cm thickness, lay it on top of plywood and create a lip type of front to cover over the lower layer of plywood so it looks like its all granite thickness of 4cm. Is this bull crap or is this for real. Looking at your video it seems the granite is one thick slab fitted directly onto the base units. Please advise if I am having the wool pulled over my eyes. Thanks, great video. Cheers

Hi, sorry for the late reply. The person that came out and did the measurements ahead of time did a poor job plus some of our walls bowed some over the years. So the guy installing my granite countertops says that you don’t need to do any of the caulking before placing the countertops down and that the actual weight of the granite will hold them in place. I mean the countertops are quite heavy but it just seemed kind of odd to me is this normal?
@SilverLiningDayDreams

Great question. I’ve always seen the countertops placed on some sort of adhesive caulk. Even though they are super heavy; caulking them gives me peace of mind. If it were me I think I would ask him to caulk. Sometimes different areas of the country do things a little different. Have you considered calling some other installers in your area and asking them if they caulk to get a feel of what’s done in your area?

I will be using a copper sink, and I would worry about dissimilar metals corrosion with the stainless steel supports. I suppose those cross bars can be had with some sort of resin shims and gaskets to eliminate that potential problem?

@@SilverLiningDayDreams Yeah, I have been shopping eBay for some of the appliances and materials going into my kitchen rebuild. I had ordered a stainless double-bowl sink, then after I pulled the trigger on the purchase I found a Coppersmith-brand hammered copper double-bowl at a price that made returning the stainless sink, even including the return shipping, a no-brainer. My plan is blue pearl countertops (it's a galley) with a light-color grey or white granite with garnet flecks as a backsplash and other vertical surfaces up to the cabinets, light-color stained wood or painted base and wall cabinets....

I put down a plywood 3/4 over the top of the cabinets and its level.. Didn't want the stone leveled by pushing in soft pine shims, nope, avoid that at all costs. With the plywood the stone is equally supported no spaces under the stone. Also my setup is seamless. Too bad you didn't show hou the sink went in.

Is it true that granite or laminate has to be glued down?
@SilverLiningDayDreams
@SilverLiningDayDreams Жыл бұрын
I asked my friend that installs laminate countertops for a living how they are installing laminate countertops and he said… First choice-screw down. If no blocking on cabinets, then clear silicone. Can put some weight on top overnight if top has warped at all. For granite countertops the granite shop that installed our granite countertops used silicone caulk and stated that it’s the weight of the granite for the most part keeping them in place. If you look through the comments on our video there is a lot of different opinions out there. Hope this helps 😊

I don’t remember but I believe we wanted to buy locally and have delivered and not use a big box store because some of the reviews mentioned imperfections in the sink when purchased. Can’t remember what they were. Because we have had it for almost 2 years now I’m not sure what the prices would be but I think we did pay more than the big box stores at that time for peace of mind to work with a local trusted company.

Also I don’t like the silicon going underneath the countertop and in between the wall sides. If the homeowner ever wanted to replace them, it would tear something up trying to get them out. 1 bead of silicon underneath after setting them is enough, nobody should be prying up on their countertops in the first place and if they do it should break warranty

Not true at all. It depends on the type of granit they are using. I would have liked to have seen some steel support brackets for that over hang on the island end but the type of granit they were using is fairly riggid. Man made quarts is technically more durable than most granits but it has its drawbacks for sure. I would never out man made quartz in my home. Seams never turn out because razor blades always leave metal marks.

Tape waste of time especially for caulking white on white. Use paintable. If you can't judge on how much to use put less and fill gaps. Can't imagine putting tape every time Jesus id quit. Seal the top before applying any calking except trans white silicone in front of top where top and cabs meet. Why you drill hole after calking?

The piece under the window is glued to the peninsula piece and there was adhesive caulk placed all along the walls after the install to keep water out. These combined pieces weigh very very much. Some of the caulking laid on the cabinets is still there doing it’s thing. It’s mostly the weight of these counters that keep them in place. It has not moved in almost three years. In fact if you tried to remove the counters or even just try to move them you would more than likely destroy the cabinets in the process.
