I think the sound might be inductor whine. The DC-DC inverter's inductors could be carrying higher peak currents or having larger changes in current flowing through, causing the coil to vibrate more due to magnetic forces. Inductors don't have to be so audible - they can have silastic to prevent/absorb vibrations, or would tightly enough against its ferrite core. Thanks for another great episode!

@skesinis4 жыл бұрын
Could you also try the opposite and run the TV OS on the iMac by swapping/bless(ing) the kernel with the one from the Tiger OS X, along with the EFI and the nVidia & ethernet kernel extensions that it needs? (Or even all of them) Maybe it will boot that way and if it does it should definitely be much faster than the AppleTV itself. Also on dd you can press Ctrl-T at anytime to see the status/performance and you can also use ddrescue instead of dd if you install it through Mac ports or through the Homebrew project along with a lot of other Linux utilities.

also, you could speed it up a bit by using an SSD (using an IDE to SATA converter) but I'm not entirely sure how the older Mac OS X would react to the newer solid-state storage, my guess it would be that it detects it as a USB although I don't think that would happen because you're using the SATA interface, it will be interesting nonetheless to see what happens

Using a pata to msata adapter, I get about 82MB/s with instant seeking times, but I've never tried OSX with this. This is probably the best way to go, as you wont have any problems closing the case, can remove the fan and make it totally silent (the case will be cooler using a msata with the fan disabled, than with the fan active + a spinning disk) and it's also seems to be the fastest, almost saturating the 100MB/s PATA interface). I also have a pata to sata adapter that i got ages ago and with this I got about 60-66MB/s. I remember that using this, OSX Leopard 10.5.8 "wasnt too bad". Using the msata adapter should be even better. The fast SSD is almost like getting extra ram.
