@@JackBealeGuitar I don't find them user friendly at all, that's part of my problem with them. You have to faff just to get the basics working... you know, I just realised that we're getting into a windows vs mac debate and this may be the first time this has happened on the internet. So, before this becomes too common, let's just leave it at "people and pcs are different". Sweet.

Then I'd end up being a genius for a few years in college/shortly after and finally become disillusioned with the whole Apple thing, haven't been a Mac guy for a long time now, but I'll always have a place in my heart for them. Now that I think about it, most Windows all in ones are of a similar thickness, and some of them have a dedicated Nvidia GPU instead of the iPhone crap that the M1 has. @@ShiggitayMediaProductions Nice try, but I got statistics. You wouldn’t want your computer to be a glorified smartphone right? Especially for gaming and creative work. You need a real Intel or AMD processor and real Nvidia or AMD graphics to do real computing.
@ShiggitayMediaProductions
@ShiggitayMediaProductions 3 жыл бұрын
@@aimwell8813 While I will agree that an Intel based system does very well with creative work and other stuff like gaming, most people don't buy Macs (M1 or Intel) with gaming as their primary focus. "Real computing" is subjective too. I don't know what stats you have but the M1 is no slouch when it comes to creative work (like photo and video editing) and overall everyday performance. I have an M1 Mac mini and it's a super powerful machine. Am I fanboying a little? Sure. It's my right to. I don't mind if my computer is a "glorified smartphone". The M1 in fact is more than that. Sure it's based on the A14 series of iPhone/iPad chips, but I'm sure your stats include this fact: THEY'VE BEEN TWEAKED FOR macOS! Lastly, I'm aware you were trying to troll me here, and believe what you want, but it didn't work. I'll also let others come out of the woodwork and school you on the M1 and Macs in general as well. Have a nice day.

@fluffycritter 3 жыл бұрын
Back in the day, extremely high refresh rates were important for basic comfort; 60Hz refresh meant a 60Hz flicker, which caused headaches (especially when in a room with fluorescent lights which were also flickering at 60Hz). These days, refresh rate is only useful for framerate, which is nice but not so vital.

Was hoping to see more disassembly, would love a video on "Upgrading Every iMac". Despite looking like a G5 the first Intel iMac was brutal to take apart, every layer of plastic had to come apart to get to the hard drive, lots of tape, breakable clips, and cable gotchas. The G4 on the other hand was a pleasure, with a round motherboard, thermal grease on the chassis, 6 inch long aluminum screws, a gorgeous white fan. The last ones need a heatgun to get into, and are a $5 fee for the adhesive strips but are otherwise easy to deal with. I imagine nothing but the screen can be replaced on the new ones, if we are lucky.

12:43 Still rocking my Early 2008 24" iMac as my daily driver. Mine's in much better condition than yours though! Not much of the original machine remains. Over the years I've maxed out the CPU, RAM, put in an SSD and replaced the logic board and LCD. I've replaced the video card a few times too because the NVIDIA 8800 GS had a high failure rate, so I ended up downgrading to the ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO and haven't had problems since *touch wood*. It's a great machine and holds up reasonable well enough. That said, it's definitely time to upgrade!

Great video Ken. It is nice to see the history of things, some of us has used for ages. Thanks! Love it. Consider changing perspective from the computer to a workflow or process. Like working with videos, photos etc. What was the workflow on the first iMac compared to now, including distributing your end product. I started in 1989 with an IICX and a 21" black white monitor, DTP was new and changed everything in the graphics- and advertising industry, almost over night. From 1987 to 1991, while I was under education, we went from 20k$ systems (CR Tonic 360) to 5-7k$. A professional graphics workstation (now including video editing) is still around the same price level. Productivity from the Linotype workstation to the Mac was 4x in the first try. NOT including any graphics at all. The CR Tonic 360 had print capability, so the text output was on photographic paper, that had to be developed in the darkroom. Only text. To get the text and graphics out of the Mac in high quality, you needed something like a Postscript RIP Linotronic 300 / 2400 DPI. So sitting with a Mac working with Pagemaker, QuarkXPress , Freehand, Illustrator etc. was like taking a huge step into the future - in one giant go. There was a time before DTP and a time after, for sure. And the same happened to the photo- and video production industry. I actually bought a 2020 iMac 27 from a video production company. They are now working on Macbook Pros.

It allowed me to play Unreal Tournament on 800x600 and Quake III Arena at 640x480 - both was unthinkable of with the original ATI Rage 128 Pro with 6 MB VRAM. PS: the first two iMac iterations (Revision A and B) maxed out at 384 MB RAM (128 +256), which was still awesome at the time. I don’t know where you got the 768 MB from, that was probably possible with the 400MHz + iMacs…

I'm sure someone mentioned this (and sure enough someone has as I scrolled through) in the 300+ comments on this video so far, but has anyone else noticed that at 10:14 the iMac G5 is apparently running "Impossible Cat" aka the Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Developer beta for PowerPC? After 10.5 the only official versions of Mac OS X were Intel only (with Rosetta available for running PPC apps), as per the transition that was then in progress, or being planned. That's cool to see. Ken how's that iMac G5 run with 10.6 beta and 2GB RAM? Mac OS X loves RAM haha.

Ken, great potted history. I still have a Rev A Bondi iMac that I bought new back in 98 or 99. I need to fire it up and see if it still works. I think it’s got about 192MB and has a partitioned 40GB drive. It has to be partitioned as MacOS must be on a maximum 7GB primary partition.

@@dabnisbrickey6527 Thanks for catching the typo, it's OS 10.4.11. Not just one. 2 laptops and 3 Dekstops. None of them have online support, or a web-browser that is supported online, but they run all the OS just fine. The 333mghz Imac is a little slower with video files and some hi-rez games, but that's about it. The oldest one still only has a 20 gig haerd drive, but that's ok, too. All my G3, G4 and G5s will run OS 10.4.11, but none of my newer Intel-Macs.

@@dabnisbrickey6527 When I upgraded my g3 i-book "snow" to all the 10.4 versions, I got the idea to try it on my older i-mac g3's as well. I think one of them has everything from OS 7 to 10.4.11. Now the problis that some of the CRT screens are getting darker, lol! I had 2 400 mghz i-mac DV models, but both CRT screens went bad, and the motherboards won't work in the non-DV i-mac g3s. There are some weird incompatibilities between some of the models like that. The 2 oldest ones have a tray-loading CD-ROM which seems to work better than the later slot-load DVD-ROM. I also have some 500, 700 & 800 Mhrz iMac G3s, mostly for parts. I keep some older G3 models working because I have games that only run on OS9 that I still like to play, lol!

512MB is the max ram the G3 iMacs could handle. Not sure about the early revisions which could have a smaller limit but the Rev C/D Tray loaders can't go above 512mb. I read somewhere the ram controller can't address the 512 sticks properly so that's why you can't put anything bigger then 256MB in each ram slot. The newer slot loaders are a different story though but I'm more of a fan of the older tray loader. Prefer the frosted transparency of the case design over the clear transparency of the slot loaders. The slot loaders have a cheaper look to them compared to the frosted look of the older models. :P Also the CPU is on a daughter card on the original tray loader iMacs so a lot of CPU upgrades where done via replacing that card. I've heard of some even desoldering the CPU off the card and putting in a G4. There was a few other things on the card that had to be modified to change clock speeds and properly support the different CPU being installed but it's possible apparently. :D I don't know if putting a G4 in would change the ram limit though. I think that's a limit of how the ram controller worked.

Revision A and B were even limited to 128+256 MB due to the memory controller back then. I did try so many ram kits hoping to get 512 MB to work >.

@@NightDevilMacGeneral I do know with the C/D revisions that it was picky with what ram you needed to use if you wanted to do take them to 512MB. I got CL2 timing ram and they worked first try so it seems the main thing is making sure to use CL2 ram. ;)

@@MagnumForce51 either I was unlucky with the tested kits or my rev B was closer to rev A ^^ everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac_ab.html I still have that machine standing around but if I don’t stumble upon perfect 2x 256 MB modules I won’t try bothering upgrading again - In the end I will just end up breaking something ;) I think I even have 2x 256 MB installed right now but one module only gets addressed as 128 MB. This kit was certified as working in C/D revisions so I assume it should have worked if the memory controller allowed it to. Apple seems to love unsymmetrical max. Memory configurations. Had the same issue with my 2007 iMac (2+4 GB Max instead of 4+4)

I no longer have any of my old iMacs (I had a number of G3s as well as a 20" G4), but I do have the guts of my first. I paid a small fortune to upgrade my Bondi Blue rev.B with a 466 MHz CPU and Voodoo 2 3D accelerator that fit into the mezzanine slot. One of these days I'll stumble across a bargain rev.B and pop these parts into it.
