This is a quick video we shot today about bonding metal together instead of welding it all.... Nice quick and easy and holds great.
We are not endorsed by anyone or by any products... All products we use are proven in repair that we use in the shop here..... This Video is for entertainment only.
Also Cure times vary in temps as well.... Please use judgement even though I said a few times 24 hrs.... we use that time frame but I am sure tech pages and techs may say otherwise. Follow your directions and your judgement.

IT sucks that many people dont believe in chemical bonding ! I only used chemical to do my Mustangs floor pans and it is doing awesome ! I even used POR-15 for added protection and still looking good after 2 years !

@@ES4406 I actually had the chance to test it on my own vehicle. I spliced a quater panel and used it solely and (since this was an old beater) I backed it into a pole. Not only did it stay together I pulled it back out and not one seam broke. Amazing product.
@SylvesterPotter
@SylvesterPotter Жыл бұрын
But you did it wrong I think… first you have to purge to get the bond correct… and then I thought you were supposed to flatten the glue on both side of the bonding surfaces and then run a thin bead on one…. Doing it like this ensures all metal is covered and no rust… the bead you ran Doesn’t cover all the metal so the potential for rust still stands no?
@gabbermaikel
@gabbermaikel 3 ай бұрын
this is how i think it should be done indeed. A thin cover layer as if you where applying a skimcoat of bondo, it prevents any exposed metal remaining. If you dont do that its just like not painting a small part. Its going to rust from there out, and rust wil push the bond apart again at some point.

3M does have great products, and I have used them a lot in the aviation industry, but you might try Plexus sometimes. They usually beat 3M on cost, and performance. Great video, and thanks for the ideas.

It looks like you do some nice work. However you should read and follow the directions, it's very important. You must solvent clean after blowing off. You should use a 3M applicator. You MUST spread out the adhesive on BOTH parts and then apply a 3rd bead before mating parts together, You must also equalize the cartridge and extrude a small amount of adhesive out before applying to the parts. FYI, if you ever do need to get the parts apart you can heat to 400F with a heat gun or induction heater. Thanks for the video.

@@colt5189 - With $10 grand in my pocket, I could get 25% of what my discount would be at body shop supplies. I have watched a dozen of their latest videos and my god, they are air powered guns, air motors or cheaper looking plastic like a 3D printed with plastic push rods and everything. They must be loosing the patent rights to get a 2:1 ratio of product on your vehicle. Upol offers similar product with glass beads to control film thickness at the same 2:1 ratio. If 3M makes a very good product to sell to the manufacturers then aftermarket to collision shops, once done, they don’t fire the chemists & engineers and lock the door after lights out! Oh no! They keep dreaming up thinner stuff, thicker stuff, changes colors when mixed stuff. You name it. A building 6 stories high (10 ft per story) has 30 chemists and engineers on each floor, now you are talking 3 billion per year for payroll, insurance, holiday, time off, vacation, lights, gas, water, permits, inspection of fire equipment since chemicals and workers comp, fire insurance, upkeep…. No wonder it cost $58 for a sack with 200ml of panel bond & two tips! Two tips, that’s all. That is like opening a bag of “Dorito’s” and saying, here, eat just one. Ok, I got it off my chest. But it is crazy expensive. No wonder new trucks are $38,800 and up from a base model. Got a new ten year old car, insurance is high even with “LKQ” parts. That means; like quality, similar kind but certified used and removed correctly as to not damage the integrity of the glued spot welded every 20mm part! ASE master tech since 1978, retired.

@@ES4406I'm pretty sure you're supposed to put some self-fetching metal primer down before you do any bonding. Also before the primer you should wipe down the bare metal with acetone and then denatured alcohol that will remove any oils or grease. Just sanding it doesn't do that.

Does the 3M 8115 sag? On my car, I've got like a 1/4" wide gap between two panels that runs for like 8". One panel is SMC and the other is aluminum. The gap runs horizontal and goes down deep. But I'm going to fill like the top 1" of it as I need to keep rain water out. And someone recommended I use the 3M 8115 for this as it will stick to both SMC and aluminum with no primer needed and this needs to be permanent. Though it has a long set time and so I'm not sure if it will sit where I put it or if it will sag and run? Thanks

@deankay4434
@deankay4434 2 жыл бұрын
You can save the panel bond and other products easy. Leave the mixing tip on it as only 2/3rds will harden, tape the tips, plug and write the date on it, then place it in an area, room or beer fridge (But do NOT freeze) but is dark cool area at 40-55 degrees, it can last two to three years. When you are ready to use, allowing to warm on its own, remove the mixing tip and use a pick to remove any hard chunks. It will last much longer this way and perform just fine. As a retired getting ready to my 38 year old son’s rocker panel on his 86 Monte SS, just a section with some 18 gauge then spot weld in select areas, I thought I would let you know. Oh, yah, I forgot to mention that he can’t put most things together and I’ve 7 back surgeries with an implanted nuerostimulator and metal electrodes at the L1. If I lay on my back, it feels like two paper clips in the wall outlet down my legs. The good news it don’t and never hurt there. The bad news it hurts above when I bend and I am 6’3” tall. Everything is built short. But save your product man. It hurts my heart to see you toss that in the can! Stay safe and it looks like you guys do good work. I envy having a buddy! Manual mixing is NOT equal amounts. The mix ratio is evidenced by the different tube sizes. Mix equal amounts, you will have a bad mix and will run out of the second part early. FOrcing the plungers in each tube equal distances will give you the correct ratio.
@ES4406
@ES4406 4 жыл бұрын
You can if you know what you are doing with 08115. I use the apply gun all the time ...The activator is smaller in the one side of the tube than the product... what was meant it that equal amounts from both sides produce the correct amount.... we do use the mix tubes all the time. You are correct as what the gun does.
