The screws are fine for folks without welders like a MIG. If you have a spot welding setup great as long as you can reach the spots with the tips you have. The 3M bond has glass beads in it so control the joint thickness and welding can be done thru the screw holes, old spot weld holes but only while the product is freshly installed. They do recommend spreading a flat layer first for coverage of bright metal using a brush or spreader, then a second round bead on top for good contact. The bonding adhesive seals from moisture and future rust so if you can clean, sand or POR the back, use cavity wax. Upol panel bond has glass beads in it as well, but we won’t say anything! We pour the POR 15 out into an old paint mixing container, though a used (and cleaned) sandwich container will work. The key to keeping POR 15 in good shape are as follows: If you can, refrigerate it. Use a dipper to get product out of the can; don't pour. When you reseal your can, make sure the mating surfaces are both clean and free of the product. Unlike James Bond, POR 15 recommends that you stir not shake the product.

In an area where rust is likely to reform and where hidden rust remains between adjacent panels, using an adhesive in conjunction with POR-15 on the surrounding areas is probably a better long term solution than welding. For one, the heat from welding will likely ruin the integrity of the POR-15 coating nearest to the heat, and second, getting clean welds may prove difficult due to rust particle contaminants drawn into the weld from between the brace and the adjacent remaining outer fender.

I want to convert my Automatic 95 Toyota Supra to a manual, I bought the factory transmission tunnel cover/housing for it. There are 32 spot welds holding the auto tunnel cover in, but underneath, there is seam sealer, I've heard/read panel bond is strong as or as strong as a weld. Can I bypass having to weld the new panel in using panel bond or do I need to reweld the old spots?

I need to put in a rear lower bed patch panel on a Ford Ranger. I have a 120v Flux core welder but I'm wondering if this would be better? Please advise. Live in a salt state so I'm thinking this would prevent rust better than welding.

Depends, we have seen the panel bonding adhesive bleed through paint. The welder you have may make for more frustration than fixing. In this case, since it sounds like you are working on cosmetics rather than load bearing, I'd probably take a shot at the adhesives.

I have to close up holes drilled in the roof of a former police car. I was advised welding is risky it might warp the panel (2013 Charger). I think this will do the trick. I can't use clamps though I was thinking I could use some magnets to hold the panel rather than zip screws.
@AutoRestoMod5 жыл бұрын
You can try that. If I were going to do that I would put a plug on the underside of the roof and use Evercoat fiberglass filler to smooth the spot.

Mike Schoppe Some. Keep in mind that panel bonding adhesive is for full panel work.We've since learned form Larry Sherley, our other host, that panel bonding as we did it in this video can have "tells" after it has been done. Allan said much the same thing. We'd still say that panel bonding adhesive is best left to the full panel install and welding is the best way to do this kind of repair.

This is where you have dropped the ball. Should have sandblasted that rusted area to an SSPC-SP5 White Metal. Then applied a zinc-rich corrosion resistant primer (think sacrificial anode like on your Merc Marine Outdrive, or inside your hot water heater). Followed by a High Build Epoxy Intermediate Coat (vapor barrier). POR-15 is Crap, by comparison. Check to see if POR15 has an accelerated salt-spray test data. I am unaware if it carries any resistance to salt-spray, especially when compromised.

Lots of ways to skin a cat bro. Clecos are not in everyone's tool box. Flanging while appropriate in some areas would not be easy on a compound curve.
