MINI finally has a piano black beltline/waistline part for the current gen 2 door! I can finally remove the vinyl covered chrome piece and replace it with an actual black part on my GP3!

Having watched a guy on KZbin from the UK absolutely butchering this installation with pry tools on uncovered paintwork, I’m really glad to have found your video. Gives me much more confidence to get on with this mod this coming weekend!

Always had more important stuff to do, but now finally had the time, mood and opportunity to dechrome my 2018 LCI JCW hatch (one of those rare ones of early 2018: no Particulate Filter yet with full sound, but already full LED/Union Jack rearlight and other 2018 LCI stuff). It itched me all those 4 years, as all the black parts weren't really available back when i bought it, and: the brighter colours just beg and scream for it. Mine is Solaris Orange + black roof/spoiler/mirrors. Go figure... Here in Europe, all the original parts cost me 1200€ (thats around ~1300USD), "all" meaning: both door handles, fuel cap, front grill surround, 4xfront/rear lights frame, beltline kit, front logo and the handmade carbon fibre hood scoop (that black'ish first version with typical fibre pattern and gloss painted, not the new GP style matte grey'ish version). I deliberately kept chrome on the rear logo (to maintain contrast on the piano black hatch lid cover), the 2 JCW sidescuttels (black most part anyway) and the front/rear JCW logos. My resume: a) it totally changed, literally transformed, the look of the car. If you have a brighter colour (white,silver,yellow,orange) the contrasts knock your socks off, it's just awesome. Mine is screaming (contrast/colourwise) like a KTM XBow or KTM Motorcycle. Now it's perfect, and just how i always imagined. b) Having seen all those cheaper methods (wraps, covers etc.) on various Minis over time - not only videos but IRL: that always put me off and seemed like a waste of money (for the cheap or outright bad look, or poor fit, or starting discoloration after a short time - not from a distance, but if you take a closer look). Seriously the best tip for anyone thinking of de-chroming: if you can afford - do yourself the favour and go for the original parts. They fit 100% perfect, with awesome quality, materials and looks (no shit sherlock - it's original by BMW/Mini, so....), and sure last a long time without loosing their good looks. That's why i stored to keep or sell the og chrome parts (except some where clips broke upon too hasty removal): all rubber seal lips fine, and looking as good as new after 4 years. And yes - a half decent el cheapo copy, with low quality ABS and not fully coloured through, for ~40€, when i can get the perfect OG part for ~70€? No thanks, no need to think twice.... c) Of all the beltline removal/fit videos here on YT - your's is the best, with the best explanation and including the most valuable tips. Took me 30 minutes to do all (including cleaning of the edges). So thanks for that video. And have fun in that awesome GP3 #0001 ! 👍👍

You have got to be kidding me. I have a JCW on the boat now, and purchased all the black badges, door handles, and gas cap ($$$) but my MA didn't mention the coming availability of the black belt line, and I asked about it! I guess this is another $500 down the tubes! Thanks for the DIY Mr. 0001. Very well done.

Thanks for this video. In all honesty I wish I had just paid the dealer to do this. My install was just not as clean looking as the factory installed chrome trim. Not sure if I just don’t have the magic touch with this, but looking at my before and after pictures the chrome trim was much more even looking all the way around.

@@TheMINIVlog I think when I take it in for one of the complimentary oil changes I’m going to ask them to reinstall. It was the hood, two rear windows, and the hatch one that I just couldn’t seem to get exactly the way the chrome came from the factory. Maybe I’m just too OCD!

If you closely inspect the vinyl you can tell it's tape. I like this better. It looks way more professional
@KCnLex
@KCnLex 3 жыл бұрын
PS do you think it looks better than the tape or can you only tell from up close?
@TheMINIVlog
@TheMINIVlog 3 жыл бұрын
You will always be able to tell since you know. The tape is hard (if done well) for others to notice unless they are up close. So from a distance they both look the same more or less. Up close, the part looks way more professional IMO. I can still tell a tape job even on the best done jobs but I know what to look for. So I think it really comes down to what you can live with in your own mind.

I have to get this for my JCW! At the moment I keep having to put that silly black tape on and it always comes loose. These are expensive but looks worth it to me as every time I look at the chrome on my car it’s like being punched in the stomach. How long from start to finish did this take you to install and could I mess it up!?? Kind of scared over here. From the UK as well. Cheers
@TheMINIVlog
@TheMINIVlog 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah as good of a vinyl job as I could do, it was always noticable up close where a tiny tiny tiny bit of chrome poked through. So I am extremely happy these came into existence despite their hefty price tag. The whole job would have probably taken me 30 minutes if I wasn't recording. Now that I know how each trim piece comes off, probably could do it in 10 minutes. I think you are safe from messing it up because the danger in breaking a clip or something is really only when you remove the trim piece and that would be on the chrome piece you are removing so I would consider this a relatively safe job to do on your own
