The most precious thing we have and that we can give is TIME , thank you folr this ace channel , I am a complete novice, with a seized 2 stroke 10 hp Mariner, and a 16 ft grp old Dinghy, Mariner is built in the 80's I think, boat is older , it is an Orkney Long Liner mk 1, displacement hull, I want to make it better, and sort out the Engine, Your channel is giving me the confidence [ albeit slowly[I am not mechanically minded with no skills ] to actually have a go at both projects . Thank you .

Former US Navy and Merchant Marine engineer here. As someone whose job at times was changing the port/starboard bulbs high aloft on on ocean going vessels, the US Coastguard takes indicator lights seriously. They don't muck about on Flagged vessels. Good stuff mate!

Stu i wish you had this video up a couple of weeks ago it would have saved me having to get somebody else install the lights and renew the wiring through out my boat. Hopefully i'll have my boat fixed up before the end of this summer and get her out on the river for a fish, might catch up with you on the hawkesbury once the boats fixed.

+tolgahk84 I'm starting to realise I should have done all the common things first like the lights and tell-tale before doing the engine rebuilt video. Oh well... I was thinking it might be fun to pick a weekend to have a channel meet up on the water. Let me know if you are ever coming around Dangar Island.

@DangarMarine8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the river sure can run. I do like that configuration for a stern light. I went with an all-round pole light this time so we'll see how long it lasts. It certainly won't be as safe from knocking on wharves etc.

Your videos are some of the most practical and informative boat videos. I really appreciate the effort you put into making these videos. When you discussed the “legally technical” issues regarding the light mounted on your engine, I had an idea that should solve the issue. The mounting area is a brilliant idea. Personally, I can’t stand the poles. I think a new mounting bracket would solve the issue with lighting while maneuvering. Rather than cutting the bracket as a straight piece, then bending the 90, making the “L,” first cut the bracket into a “T” shape. The “T” could be bent around at say a 45 on each side, which would allow another 2 lights to be installed, and no matter the direction of the engine, the light could be seen from the rear. I’m referring to a shape similar to this ... \_/ ... the aluminum sheet appeared rigid enough to handle the shape. Just a thought.
@DangarMarine6 жыл бұрын
Hey Mark, I like that mounting location too and I see what you are saying with your bracket. The main trouble is it can't show a bigger arc that the regulations allow otherwise you don't know when you have stopped being the overtaking vessel. I think it is worth thinking about thought because I would like to move back to this system again on my boat. It worked well for many years.
@MCP536 жыл бұрын
This video was exactly what I was looking for! I understand the Colregs fully, but I live on a 38' narrowboat on a river and all sorts of questions came to mind. The boat was sold to me as a 40 footer, but the original paperwork shows 38 feet, so actually, by Colregs, the 3-mile lights I bought are too big! The sides of the superstructure are not vertical, but inclined; should I fashion a bracket to install them vertically? Narrowboats are long and thin and the best place for the port and starboard lights is quite far forward, as it is this part of the boat that is going to poke around the corner first. Most of the plastic cruisers in the marina have them installed about half way aft. The best news is that I can use the single 360 degree masthead light, which can double as an anchor or fishing light. The bracket-making and electrical connection advice was brilliant. Thank you!
@DangarMarine6 жыл бұрын
Hey Malcom, yes, I would make some sort of bracket to keep the lights at the correct angle. Even just a wedge-cut piece of hardwood or something should do the trick. Good point about having them further forward in your context of enclosed waterways rather than the open ocean.
@MCP536 жыл бұрын
You are right about the bracket. I shall get inventive :-)

Hi Great video, just wondering what you think of the new LED strip navigation lights?
@daynecowan9 жыл бұрын
Good video mate. Loved the theory, keep that coming. I was wondering if there is a need to round the corners of those aluminum brackets? Looks like you could easily catch ropes on them? Or is that not a big deal? Also, who polices navigation lights when you are on the water? Can you get stopped for incorrect positioning or use?
@DangarMarine9 жыл бұрын
+Dayne Cowan Yeah, I was kicking myself for not rounding them because they can also cut if you trip on them. I normally do but had a bit of a brain fade while filming this. Roads and Maritime and the Water Police all check navigation lights and yes, you can certainly get fines if they are wrong.

Great video. I was totally engaged because it was information I really wanted to know. I’m left wondering about the battery and the power that could maybe blow the globes (or LED’s). Is it easy to regulate the voltage or whatever? How long does the (is it a regular car battery) last?
@DangarMarine5 жыл бұрын
These marine LED lights have built in resistance to limit current flow so they are fine connected directly to a battery. Depends on the size and health of the battery how long they will last but LEDs can run for days on a single charge.

Hey boss i have a small 14ft vhull with a steering wheel and I'm wondering what the smallest or best motor I can get away with that will allow me to have steering and throttle control. can something like a 72 evinrude 6hp motor be compatible with something like that? also awesome videos, keep them coming
@DangarMarine7 жыл бұрын
Good question, I'm presuming some outboards weren't configurable to have forward controls, but I'm not sure about the old Evinrude 6's. I'm pretty sure many of the small (around 10HP) outboards can take forward controls though but you might need to talk to a dealer to confirm for sure. You could also look at an exploded diagram for the outboard you are looking at on MarineEngine.com and see if they show parts for the tiller and non-tiller versions.

Hi i wanted to ask and i am sry i do not have more of my boats info but .. i have a 22 ft boat and a mercury 225 fourstroke and 2 deep cycle m,arine bateries ,........ i am interested in doing some night fishingh so with the navigation lights on ,,, and the white light on the t top and maybe the sonar / gps running maybe a pero light how badly does all that drain batteries because i also have a front and rear spreader light i wanted to use . and that seems like alotta juice . so any info would be helpful thanks
@TroyBoy875 жыл бұрын
Great channel glad I stumbled upon it. I’m new to boating got myself an old Savage Tasman as a project so you’re videos are coming in handy however I have 2 questions I would like to ask of you 1. Does the anchor light have to be mounted on the rear of the boat and 2. Can I use just a standard car battery for checking the electrics (lights once I replace them) or should I purchase a marine battery from the start? P.S. I don’t plan on running an outboard on the car battery. Thanks
@DangarMarine5 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, no, the anchor light can be anywhere but needs to be visible from every direction and be (I believe) 1 metre higher than the side lights (but a good practical separation will do for a recreational boat) Yes, I wouldn't be too concerned about using a car battery.
@TroyBoy875 жыл бұрын
Dangar Marine thank you for that info. I want to ask just one more from you, I watched you’re video last night about wiring a boat, I was looking at purchasing the cables from BCF it’s 3mm 16amp, would that be enough to run lights, radio, fish finder etc or should I use a bigger size ?

No marine sealant between the bracket and the deck? The wiring on that boat looks like a nightmare - corrosion everywhere!
@DangarMarine9 жыл бұрын

Hi Ron, finally got around to checking out your wiring diagram, quite cool. I'll be redoing the wiring in the Green Machine very soon so I'll look at bringing elements of this into the design. I've now got a Shopify site setup under the dangarmarine.com.au domain so I'll see if I can start adding some extra pages for information like this and an FAQ or something. Thanks for sharing it. Maybe an image or PDF export would be good so people can check it out without using Sketchup.
