For anyone not familiar with lath and plaster remodeling, this is the way anyone who works on your home should do it. Each cut to remove old material becomes the basis for installing new material and the way this man stabilizes the lath with spray foam and wide battens will completely eliminate the possibility of the plaster cracking on the side of the wall that remains intact. Superior work, all-around here. Quality workmanship we can aspire to.

Thanks Scott! Ive not tried the method before but the idea just occoured to me, and it worked superbly, verses trying to risk it praying itll hold together. Saying that the plaster was about 25mm thick, so was fair sturdy.

There is an interesting vaulted part in one wall that noone can explain. but im not sure. it was a bathroom and going to be a bathroom again. the green is a tile adhesive grip promoting primer. they are really good.
@jonesconrad1Ай бұрын
If you can still get hold of them a dremel DSM 20 is great for cutting into lime lath and plaster. its a mini circular saw other people make them too, i actually bought it for tile (was easier doing intricate around socket cuts with a little sliver left than use a grinder ) save the blade on your decent festool saw.

thats the idea! I have a mini dewalt thing (recent purchase) but i originally bought this aldoi saw for diamond blade use on a track for grooving stainless bars into floors for thresholds, never used it yet and this was its first ever use lol. £60 well spent.

Nice work as usual. Just wondering - why no header or even a doubled header installed over the top / transom of the new frame?
@BradshawJoineryАй бұрын
cheers mate, the delicacy of the plasterwork basically, i used the lining for strength, and the studs above were only short, ply lined on the back side. not ideal but there was no way to add a header in and cover it with the tiny architrave profile thats going on!
@gillie-monger3394Ай бұрын
@@BradshawJoinery I see. Cheers.
@idontthinkso666Ай бұрын
@@gillie-monger3394 Again with the header! You failed to notice the previous wall had no header, because the wall isn't load bearing. You people can't even tell the difference between a header and a rough door frame.

Brilliant video as always. I’m not a carpenter at all but curious- why spray foam and plywood the sides and above the door opening? Is it to stop the wall moving?
@BradshawJoineryАй бұрын
Cheers, yeah lath and plaster is notorious for falling apart (even without working on it) so the foam helps to hold everything in place and strengthened with the plywood, meant i could remove the old lining, cut a new hole and still have intact plaster at the end!

@tompenneck1501Ай бұрын
Hi Ollie, although I love and appreciate all of your videos. Sometimes your client needs to know that this door is past its best, and walls. Surely easier all round to buy over sized lining material to compensate for the flaws in walls and doors. Long time follower, just saying
@tompenneck1501Ай бұрын
Plus probably should have put a header back above the framing
@BradshawJoineryАй бұрын
I know what your saying, I expected a lot of comments suggesting to replace the wall entirely but in the circumstances it was deemed better not to and I carried it out as efficiently as possible and it did work out a lot more cost and eco friendly. The door will be great. She’s a bit twisted but that is nice in terms of character, when it’s sanded and waxed it’ll fit perfectly with the house to be fair and the wobblynessof it be a positive 👍
@idontthinkso666Ай бұрын
A bit of twist in a 100 year old door, and it is past it's best? Tell you what, Tom, you head down to Home Depot and get your crap door to use on your crap job, and leave the quality work to the rest of us.
