Thank you Chet for those Minnesota farm memories, that I have from years ago visiting my uncles in Minnesota. It was always enjoyable when they were swatting their hay , and grains. The Scandinavians must have loved the weather patterns, or something from the 47th to the 49th parallel. Because, except for when Lawrence Welk from Strasburg North Dakota along with this whole Orchestra got their own program on TV. He was the only reminder of the Minnesota dialect. We Didn't make it down there much with the old number 10 under construction for the new I-94.!! We would have to travel from 22 miles north of Old 10, and a mile from the Montana line to Eden Valley, Forest City, and Litchfield Minnesota area. Us Western Edge of No-Dak Farmer/Ranchers, swath our small grains and hay.

Thanks for another great video. It was interesting and enjoyable. Wow. Those new lights really brighten up the truck and wash bays part of the shop. Amazing what the LED lights can do. Nice they had a lift to reach that high. Thanks for showing us the relighting of the shop. Amazing. Thanks for everything Chet. The Iowa Farm Boy. Steve.

I ran a warehouse and became certified for all the different lifts. I was the manager and didn’t have specific daily tasks so I drove around changing lights. Ours was 36’ ceilings I believe. Moving around while you’re 30’ in the air is a little tricky. You will love the difference in brightness. We had 400,000 square feet and saved like 12,000$ a month on electricity when we switched to LED.

My son built a 30 x 50 garage and put in 20 led lighting fixtures. I told him I know when he's in the garage at night because of the glow in the sky. That might be a bit exaggerated but it's so nice working in a shop that's properly lit. Virtually no shadows to deal with really nice.

Actually Chet, LEDs do quit working. We have had to replace them at my work. And I have replaced them at my home and have an outside area light that is less than 2 years old needing replacement. Luckily that one is under warranty and they are shipping me a new one this week.

-- Yep! But newer stuff seems to last longer. It's funny that a lot of "simple" LED lamps contain integrated circuits. That basic LED has a lifetime measured in decades but but supporting electronics often contains capacitors with a much shorter life.

I think you went with a good choice of retrofitting your fixtures. Because they WILL eventually “burn out”. What is nice about your retrofit is you can put new led lamps in and don’t have to replace the whole fixture. Good choice 👍.
@richardlug6139

Best part if I caught it right was they only had to remove the ballast and end sockets as they had the same wire ends to plug in the new ones. When I did my own using the same fixture, after removing the ballast I had to rewire while simple it took longer, but mine were cheap eBay’s from China. A lot cheaper than the ones they used. They will burn out quicker I am sure, but I could buy three for the price of one from the US.

Chet, after all of LED’S are in and operational, see if you get a reduction in your bill by a few bucks every month. I swapped all of my home, garage and pole barn to LED fixtures. I pitched the old overhead ballast units. Wicked easy DIY job as long as you don’t have fixtures 40 feet in the ceiling like you have in the wash bay…

The higher the light source, the more the loss… the only solution is higher lumen lighting designed for the distance or lower the light source closer to the target. I’m guessing that the latter would be detrimental to the intended use of the space. It was really refreshing to see the installer using a measuring device to demonstrate the difference since cameras have auto iris and auto white balance making it difficult to see the difference on the recorded video.

LED is just so much more adaptable. Flexible. Etc. Just the way to go Note adapting an existing fixture this way will not be as efficient But this is a good use case. Especially dealing with a wet rated fixtures All fixtures or bulbs will go bad. Here I would expect led maintenance to be more a half decade. Assuming one bad led bulb doesn’t take out the entire fixture.

Are you guys seeing significant increases in electrical bills (like most of the world seems to be experiencing at the moment)? In light of that, have you considered installing solar panels on your farm buildings with battery storage? You have lots of roof space with which you could do solar and with the winds you get there you could augment the solar with wind turbines (not the big ones like CornStar farms have in their backyard). I know it might need a large chunk of capital to do that but your ROI should be a relatively short term (3-5 years maybe). You would have lots of things to consider, like 3 phase power, how strong your roofs would have to be to support weight and wind loads, all the "tech" involved, where support for that would come from (at present), space to put batteries safely, etc. I'm sure that Chet could use his "YT influencer" status and entrepreneurial charm to get a sponsor 😁😊(with a discount for referrals of course). BTW. Does your family have relatives in other parts of the world? I grew up in a farming area that had lots of Nordic families who emigrated there (mainly from Denmark and Sweden) from the mid to late 1800's and your family name is strongly represented (as I think the Big Swede's may be as well). I know it is extremely unlikely, but I thought I might ask 🙃.
