I just finished installing this exact setup on my pontoon boat. I watched your step by step videos a few times and I had the outboard/controls/VesselView installed in no time. Thank you so much for making so easy!!!

I have a 2024 Merc 40 hp 4 stroke EFI command thrust. I don't see the terminator(blue) connection on my motor. What parts do I need to connect under the dash? I have the smart guage remote wire already run to the dash, but the smart view mobile does not connect to that connector.
@tomspontoons4 ай бұрын
I’ve never hooked Vessel View up under the dash. The terminator cap under the motor hood might be a different color now…last I installed I believe it was red. It’s been a few months since the last 40 I installed.

Hi mate not sure if i missed it but where did you mount battery leads on motor
@tomspontoons6 ай бұрын
This motor ships with the battery cables pre-installed, so excuse me for not having an exact location! There's typically a ground post near the starter, and a positive post before the starter solenoid. Both typically share their post with other leads making it a little easier to find. Otherwise, check out www.vanssports.com for a schematic for that motor!

I'm a bit confused. I love the simple vessel view you installed but what is the square one used for? I'm going to get a new 2024 50hp ELPT command thrust here in a few weeks so I want the correct part. Just don't understand why I see 2 different parts called vessel view. Thank you for any help
@tomspontoons Жыл бұрын
What squared one are you referring to? Vessel View comes as the kit that pretty much just plugs right in.

@@tomspontoons after a bit more looking it's vessel view link I keep seeing. Just found out the difference finally.

@@bthompson101202ok good! Because you had me stumped there!! It’s an easy install. If you’re having the motor installed at a dealer I’d just have them add it while installing so it’s ready to go for you when you pick it up.

Nice video. I have a question about the neutral position. Where must the rider be? In the center of the leaves? The control handle is in a vertical position.
@tomspontoons7 ай бұрын
I'm not sure what you mean by the "rider". The shift lever should be in neutral, and the shift mechanism on the motor also centered in neutral, then adjust the cable on the motor end so that the shift mechanism on the motor is still centered with a little bit of play in each direction before hitting forward or reverse.

Quick question i just upgraded from a 2003 merc 2 stroke to a 2020 merc 4 stroke and my cables dont seem to want to hook up on the motor did they change the cables or am i just doing it wrong
@tomspontoons Жыл бұрын
The cables should be the same on the motor side, but there’s a chance they’d be different on the control box side. Is that what’s happening?
@hoyt1198 Жыл бұрын
@@tomspontoons i believe it could be it acts as if where the throttle cable hooks up to where the adjuster i cant go far enough back and same for the gears

Is the throttle and shift cable the same? I’m ordering a brand new 40 CT and I’m looking at some throttle and shift cables online and they appear to be the same part.
@tomspontoons Жыл бұрын
Yes, they are identical parts. That’s why I often label them on each end when unpackaging so that I can save time when installing at the control box and at the motor. Newer and new control boxes will take Gen2 cables, while older style controls will take Gen1.
@djstone061 Жыл бұрын
Question: can you use non mercury branded gen 2 control cables on the newer 2020 mercury 4 stroke engines, my engine is a 2020 90 hp. Can’t find mercury branded cables locally but do see Domintic and Uflex brands. Ok to use these?
@tomspontoons Жыл бұрын
You should be just fine using Dometic or U-flex versions of the Mercury cables!! They do a great job of recreating the OEM stuff from Mercury.

Getting read to replace the 1998 Mercury 40 HP 2 Stroke on my 24' `98 Godfrey Pontoon with upper deck. We are on a no-wake lake, 10mph max. We do some slow towning of kids. The Mercury dealer is suggesting a Mercury 25hp, I am use to a 40hp, is they any problem in running a new Mercury 40hp at 1000-3000 rpm range. What do you recommend 25 or 40?
@tomspontoons Жыл бұрын
I don’t see any issue with running a 40 Hp at lower RPMs. Yes, it is the best for a motor to be opened up and run hard to help clear out carbon and such, but adding Yamaha’s Ring Free treatment to your gas should be enough to help out, and possibly it could help by revving your motor in neutral from time to time to get the RPMs up. And probably changing the spark plugs out every season or two (easy and cheap). In the dealers defense, you’d likely notice little to no change going from a 40 to a 25, and any change you’d adjust to very quickly. We put a 9.9hp Suzuki on a 24’ that’s on a no wake lake and they’ve had zero complaints about sticking with a less expensive and smaller motor.

Any idea what the prices of a re-power like this with a 60 are looking like now a days ?
@tomspontoons2 жыл бұрын
Great question! The new Mercury 60 hp Command Thrust is around $7,500 to $8,000 depending where you purchase it. The controls, cables, ignition harness and prop will be another $1,000-$1,500 on average. Labor to install is usually around $600-$700 depending on the boat. Hope that helps!!!

I bought a 2007 Mercury 40HP for my 18ft pontoon. Upgraded the ECM to a 60HP CT, removed the restricter, and installed a 14"x10" prop. It will go 18mph @5K RPM, but that is it. The 1996 50HP 2 stroke Johnson I had on it would hit 20MPH @5.5K. No clue what the problem is. Very disappointment.
