Hi guys, so this video shows how to do the vanos solenoids in bmw's after 2006 , I reset the calibration for the start and end stop for the solenoids, can you do this without the calibration? YES you can, in theory this will make it re-learn, but is it absolutely needed? Maybe not... I have changed many of them in the past without doing this and had no issue, Thanks again for watching !!! This reset procedure was for learning the variable valve lift motor limit positions against the eccentric shaft. This procedure has nothing to do with vanos solenoids. This procedure will run the vvl motor in both directions and watch the amperage the motor is drawing to determine the end travel of the vvl motor as it is installed. This procedure is done anytime the vvl system has been repaired or parts have been removed and installed.

The Chinese parts are very good. 👌 Anyone can change the vanos solenoids all they want or clean them up, but the rough start and idling will still exist. What people don't know is those solenoids have filters beneath them and if they're clogged you will always get the rough idle. There's 2 of them, take them out and clean them and you will see how this fixes the problem. Just my opinion though.

Here's an idea (maybe?) for either a follow up or another video. It would be interesting to run the VANOS test procedure in ISTA (or DIS or a 3rd party Scanner) and compare the results between the two solenoids, Chinese vs. OEM. I'd be curious to see how the DME reports back the timing results from the two kinds. That'd be kinda cool!

There is absolutely no relationship between changing vanos solenoids and learning Valvetronic limit positions. Vanos solenoids are responsible for timing related to RPM, load... Etc. It s VVT. The valvetronic (vvl) is handled by the eccentric shaft motor and sensor. What u did through ISTA is only useful when you change the ES motor or replace valvetronic gear like the eccentric shaft or the rocker springs. What you really need to do in your case is deleting engine adaptations and performing a re-adaptation for the engine (driving session, flywheel adaptation, fuel trims... Etc)

Thanks Nathan for another great vid, and this is why I am keen to bite the bullet and replace the old Vanos solenoids (old part number variant) in my '05 330i - the symptoms that I've had for ages are so indicative of one or both bad Vanos solenoids. I've cleaned and swapped them around plenty times over the years, and whether imagined or not, the improvement has always been minor and/or short lived. But I want to say that it is different depending on the orientation of the two solenoids, so assuming one of them is the bad unit, it's then affecting the engine differently depending on if it is attached to the intake or exhaust side. I am still trying to find out if the local BMW ECU specialists have the latest software that does the auto cleaning that you mentioned in a previous video, so once my car has that update I will be fitting new solenoids, and hold fingers! :)

Hi Nathan, I think you confused VANOS with Valvetronic in ISTA. The relearn procedure you ran doesn't affect the VANOS phasing or adaptation values. I don't believe there are any relearn procedures having to do with the VANOS solenoids. You can reset the adaptation values for the VANOS but should only reset if you'd changed or rebuild them. Otherwise the solenoids are simply PWM controlled given the phasing maps in the DME software and adjusted with the adaptations over time. I'm sure you knew all this though. I believe also that the valvetronic limits (the min and max opening of the valves) are relearned after terminal 15 is switched on and the car not started. I think this is true for everything from 2007 on. Prior you have to run the relearn procedure. But don't quote me on that. The learn procedure in INSTA or DIS is a manual procedure if needed for whatever reason, especially if the valvetronic motors have been removed and replaced.

@@BMWDoctor I meant no disrespect to Nathan or what he's showing. I apologize if my comment came off that way. Especially to Nathan and yourself. I was just trying to point out that the procedure that he ran in ISTA was the relearn for the valvetronic, not clearing adaptations. Which I agree with you should be cleared. I should have said as much and more clearer. About the relearn for the valvetronic... I do know that it is a real procedure that is run after switching the car on and have read it in BMW documents. With that said, I'm now never going to be able to find it to prove it... I've also witnessed the motors go through the procedure personally after doing work on my own E63 with an N62. Assuming that the procedure is not engine specific? I'll admit I'm not an "expert" but have done a good deal of work on BMWs and know my way around the different BMW software. But by no means have your level of expertise with the software. So much respect to you on that, my friend. I only brought up DIS because from it or ISTA you can run the valvetronic relearn procedure or clear adaptations... Sorry again if I offended you (or Nathan). Very much had no intention.

@@BMWDoctor Thanks for the reply. I would never want to make Nathan, or anyone for that matter, look stupid. I have a huge amount of respect for Nathan and what he does on his channel. I know that it takes a huge commitment to produce good content on/for KZbin and Nathan's are some of the best. My hope is that Nathan didn't take my original comment the wrong way and understood what I was trying to say. The intent of my comment was in no way to try and make myself look smart. I put myself through school as a mechanic earning my degree in mechanical engineering (I now work for NASA) and have a good background on the electrical and software side of things. So these days I don't do much as I used to, but I have been working on cars for almost 30 years and try and keep myself current with all the different emerging technologies. And I find that the saying, "the more you learn, the more you find you don't know" is very much true. So you are correct when you say that watching these videos you learn something. I watch mainly for entertainment purposes, however, there are little things here or there that you can learn and pick up from these guys. For example, I just changed the timing chains and guides in my e39 (w/ M62) and Nathans video(s) on that turned me onto the German Auto Solution tools. So grateful for that! I've done coding but not so much in terms of programming - yet. Starting to lean toward a J2534 pass through and going through BMW Tech (here in the states) and just pay for a subscription. But still researching like mad and learning! Cheers, my friend!

@pfoglar 5 жыл бұрын
First of all, I have the utmost respect for Nathan, and don't doubt your knowledge and experience Dean. I was also watching this video with specific interest regarding the calibration for Vanos solenoids which was new to me (not that I am a trained mechanic or specialist or anything of the sought, just been trying to understand and fix various issues on my N52 over the years). My understanding of the Valvetronic end stops calibration is specifically for the intake valve lift so that the Valvetronic motor and Eccentric Shaft Sensor are calibrated so that the throttle essentially working correctly. I have some experience with this when a local BMW specialist where I am picked up a Plausible Valvetronic error code which he determined was a faulty or slow Valvetronic motor. So a new OEM part was ordered and fitted, but I don't think he calibrated it properly, or tried to simply do it via coding without letting it perform the initial basic calibration. When I drove the car home it felt horrible, the throttle behaviour was weird and jerky, then when I gave it a few WOT runs it wouldn't run up to the red line. After I got home I remembered the reading about the DIY to change the Valvetronic motor and the basic calibration, so put the key fob in and turned the ignition on without starting the engine, and sure enough, I heard the Valvetronic motor running through the end stops. Went for a drive afterwards and the car was fine. But this is where your knowledge as well as Nathan's knowledge would have more understanding of the relationship between the Valvetronic system (valve lift/throttle) and the Vanos (valve timing) - the adjustments are very quick and precise and ever changing through the rev range and load and throttle position etc. My '05 E90 330i 6MT is one of the early N52 engined cars and has some older or different components compared to later N52 engines, including ever so slightly different coil packs and older Vanos solenoids to name a few. The issue that I have started as a minor and intermittent rattling sound on moderate throttle/load which, the local BMW dealer that I took the car to while still under Motorplan, suggested was a pinging issue. To be honest, it doesn't sound like pinging, more like a valvetrain rattle of some sort. But then I became more and more aware of dips, surges, stumbles, and other weird throttle behaviour after that. I don't have the HVA ticking lifters, and cold start and idle is fine generally. But, on some occasions I have noticed the revs climb by itself after cold start, and even more rarely, when warm. Economy and performance also doesn't seem to be where it should be and at times it feels like the engine is being "held back" with more engine braking than it should have and somewhat jerky throttle. So I have been suspecting the older part Vanos solenoids as being a possible cause for this. I've cleaned and swapped them around over the years, and even removed and cleaned the Check Valves for the Vanos system, they were perfectly clean. Anyway, I follow Nathan's channel because it is very interesting and I learn new things along the way. Thanks to Nathan and yourself for sharing your knowledge with us.

I have come to realize that in the last 5 years I have had many Chinese items fail , from electronics to tools, I have learned that it is cheaper to buy good quality the first time around, because it has cost me double or triple and I'm also left with the electronics or tools that I needed in the first place. I don't blame the Chinese because I know they make a lot of good stuff as well, I blame myself and all the consumers because we created the market for cheap stuff by continuing to buy the crap. if consumers demanded better quality and weren't so quick to save a buck the vendors would have made this clear to their suppliers in china and the Chinese would have made better quality and naturally it would cost a bit more.

You’d think that someday the cheap Chinese automotive (electronic) parts industry will improve enough that you could at least get 1-3 year of good use out of a part before it fails; instead of it never working out of the box, working for a day or two, or just never working correctly. You would think that there would be limits to how long you can produce total junk before the word has spread enough in the marketplace that you either pony up and make stuff that is at least of acceptable quality, or get forced out of business?
