So why are you cutting the front of the rails? How many times have you cut the rubbers? You can see when you refelt the rails that theres cut marks in the rubbers. Why not cut on top of the feather stripping?

It's faster to do it this way. You run a chance of cutting the top finish of the rail if you try to cut the top by the feather strip. A couple little cuts in the bottom side of the rubber will never cause any issues with play. If a sharp new blade is used, it cuts the cloth and can hardly see a cut in the rubber.

Awesome video! Thank you because this helps a lot. Sadly my budget is just too tight right now to hire out a recovery (I own a pool table because it was a free to me Kasson). Why is it some corners you fold over and others you pull back and staple with only one layer of cloth?

Thanks for posting this. It let me know that my several rail recoverings were done correctly. Every 3 or 4 years, I'd get a wild hair and change the felt color on my table, as well as a few others and vids like this didn't exist in the 90's. I'm about to install an antique Brunswick in my home and am in need of re-education. This really helps. Thanks!

@@reverendjonas Best I can tell, and was told, that it's an old commercial Brunswick. My grandfather bought out of a pool hall back in the late 60's. It was probably 25 or 30 yrs old when he bought it. He sold it in the mid 80's with the condition that I'd get first right of refusal when they sold. Fast forward to 2003 and I got a phone call. It's currently in pieces and the re-cushioning of the rails is up first. Thanks for the response.

@@reverendjonas Well, I really appreciate it! When you say 'diamond-ized', are you literally talking about the diamond spots in the rails or are you referencing something about the Diamond brand? Sorry for being so obtuse. Some of the diamonds on this table are pretty rough, as you can imagine. Would love to replace.

@@boodaghost6896 No worries, that is a term lots of people have given to cutting the subrails off the old tables and rebuilding with the same dimensions as the Diamond tables. Doing this enables you to use the same cushions, as well as making the pockets play similar to the diamond tables.

So nice!! I am wondering why you seem to pull more material to the front of the featherstrip towards the ends of the rails. I’m guessing it’s maybe to get a head start on getting rid of material for turning the corner I do some thing similar on bar box rails for the side pocket.

You got it. Pulling that little extra helps with getting rid of some of the wrinkles when stapling the bottom.

Why do some diamonds have a deep pocket shelf and others are shallow?

The deep shelf slates are from some of the original runs of the smart and Pro-Am tables. It was just a design change.

I’ve learned so much that I apply on many tables because of your excellent videos...thank you!!! After you set feather strip, can you describe the cut on the ends? It always slows me down trying to figure out how to make it easier to getting the two horizontal edge staples more clean and not having a funny finish to the angle on the top side

I slide the razor blade down the back edge of the cloth between the facing and feather strip, not cutting the vertical cloth, but cutting the "bottom" and front of the little square. That will leave little flap of cloth that can be rolled under and creased when stapling so it's nice and clean.

Ok, what’s the difference between the 860 and 860 HR?.. From my understanding, the HR stands for high resistance, and it’s made for pool halls.. Is that correct?..

HR is not just for pool halls. I feel the speed is a little faster than 860, a little slower that 760. HR will hold up to abuse better, last longer, and in my opinion play with a more consistent speed for longer. The break in period is also shorter. The physical difference is the percentage of wool and nylon, and the way the finished cloth is sheared.

I tried but cannot get my corners without creasing them. I'm using proline 303T. Perhaps it's too thick or not stretchy enough. I watched that part of your video a number of times but still can't get it. Any tips? Where do you operate out of?

@@grimloktt The important part is at 11:45 in this video. This is where all the extra cloth is "removed" by pulling it around the corner of the rail. The 2 vertical staples hide a lot of bunched up cloth behind the pocket when it is installed.

Is the double over on the side cushions extra protection or is there more reasoning than that?

The reason for the fold is to finish off the side pocket clean with no cloth bunching or ripples. If you tried to do it without a fold, the cloth would have to be pulled too tightly around the point of the cushion. It would compress the point of the cushion and make it rebound funny.

Make sure there are no bubbles. Pull the cloth tight from end to end when putting the feather strip in on top. Make sure there are no foreign objects under the cloth before stapling. Don't pull tight enough to dimple the rail rubber when stapling. Anything else just ask!

Why don't you staple directly in front of where you pull with the pliers when going down the rail

If you staple right behind the stretch, you can get dimples in the point of the cushion from it being pulled too tight. Stapling offset from the pliers makes it tight but more even.

@@anthonyvallario7561 Take your time and get a good staple puller. It takes quite a bit of practice to get the rails just right. Watch the videos a bunch. That will help you more than trying to explain it.

Hard enough. Lol. It's very hard to explain, but it is tight enough to have uniform tension along the entire rail, but not so tight as to pucker the point of the cushion. I usually pull about 1 inch ahead where I will staple. At the point of pulling the cushion is dimpled, but 1 inch away where stapling, it is just perfect.

@@kevinbowers512 In the corners it is important to pull in whatever direction you need to to get the wrinkles out as well as making the tension right. Down the straights I try to pull pretty straight back.

What make of staple gun do you use?

I do not know the exact model, its very similar to this one: www.amazon.com/3PLUS-H7116SP-Pneumatic-Upholstery-Stapler/dp/B07KQ52FBB It is a 22ga 3/8 crown Upholstery Stapler. I used to use a larger wire staple with a 1/2" crown, which holds the cloth better, but causes more damage to the rails year after year when recovering. Another plus to the 22ga staples is they come out easier.

@@cristiancalderon4307 I do not get dimples in the front of the bumpers because I pull the cloth with the pliers about an inch in front of where I am stapling. The big reason to use the smaller crown and smaller gauge is to speed up the process of removing them later and not damaging the wood as much.
