This was the best demonstration on KZbin for installing this bracket. Thanks!

Suggestion - make your ledger board thicker than the house joist, i.e. 2x10 joist - use a 2x12 ledger. This gives you more room to keep your brackets lower and not pop through the subfloor, because they can and will if that 40 degree angle somehow becomes more acute.
@ganoking1 Жыл бұрын
Just a suggestion when you dry fit the bracket turn out the adjuster until it hits then backoff a hair install and tighten!

The compression strut needs to be touching the sheeting before the two bolts are torqued.

Why
@paulgilhuis12 жыл бұрын
@@brianarcara00 because something needs to be touching the sheeting or else when you tighten the screws, the bricks will get pulled in.

Nope, that’s why you pre drill 1 1/8 inch holes. The screws should not touch the brick. Therefore no pulling involved.

So the long screws go through the plywood behind the bricks

Dr. Decks: Do you ever install ledger boards to a brick house with just bolts? My building inspector in my city says that's to code (and that's how my existing ledger board was installed. I'm adding one small ledger board and thought I'd use the same methodology as the existing board but can't find much in the way of instructional videos on KZbin showing this method.

Thank you for your videos Doctor. I watched another of your videos on using Helical Piles, actually two. Both instructive, but a I wondered if you could do a video especially to throw more light on the subject. Thank you in advance. I wondered if you could find experts on the subject of span length of the Deck floor joists in relation to the size of the Helix in the Helical pile. What size of Helix on the pile will support what length of that deck floor joists !? And if the Helix can be made larger, how much of a longer can we make that deck floor joist !? Please help.

I was planning on having the joists 12 inches on center but using the bvlz attachments (9 1/2 inches, I cannot do that. So do I go to 14 inches on center? BTW great video
@jimoakley4944 Жыл бұрын
Did you put any flashing behind the ledger board and if so what did you use. I am using the "deck to wall" spacers behind my ledger but that still leave an opening where the holes are drilled for the BVLZ's. Now I think the long screws, since they are drilled at a 40 degree angle would not be a problem since the water will run out but the hole for the bigger screw is straight in and could be problematic. What do you think?

Great question. What did you end up doing? I'm uncertain of how to flash with brick. My original deck did not have any flashing and was there for 30 year and no issues, but building inspector I guess will ask for it, just not sure how to do it.

you are actually attaching THROUGH the veneer to the floor framing/rim board. check out the Simpson website

I’m not sure I completely understand the point of that particular bracket. Is it used as a lateral tension tie, a brick stabilizer, or some other specific use that is escaping me?
@Darenator13 жыл бұрын
Like DrDecks said, there is an air space behind the brick. This keeps the deck from pushing the brick against the house. I would have had double plate against the house tying into double joists as per American Wood Council design specs.
@ShawnBinda3 жыл бұрын
Building code for homes that have brick veneer generally don't allow for deck ledgers to attach through the brick and the air gap as brick veneer is not structural. This bracket takes the load off the brick veneer
@paulgilhuis12 жыл бұрын
Brick cannot be used to support a ledger board. This bracket solves that issue by putting all the load on the bolts, which are put into the rim joist. It's a very well designed solution.
@Darenator13 жыл бұрын
Never heard of that bracket. Good info! When you held up the long screw that was my first thought, better make sure the angle is right so you don't poke thru the floor! Also I thought you would have had a double plate against the brick facade, and that would tie into double joists as per American Wood Council design recommendation.

@@ofmilkandhoneyhomestead1812 The instructions call for the holes to be drilled on the ledger and brick seperately. Then putting the ledger on the brick and HOPING the holes line up. No way, that's not happening. Even if youre off 1/2" youve just ruined your brick and ypur ledger. I installed the ledger temporarily then did all the holes after it was hung. I found this to be the easiest way. Dont understand how anyone could have success installing it the instructions way. Nearly all the videos have them being installed when theyre already up!
